Newspapermen Meet At Long Beach
Annual Convention to be Held Friday and Saturday
Publishers of California newspapers are meeting in their 42nd annual convention at Long Beach this Friday and Saturday.
This conclave is the yearly business gathering of the California Newspaper Publishers Association, composed of more than 300 of the leading daily and weekly newspapers of the state.
The Anaheim Gazette is a member and is being represented at the convention by Ted Kuchel.
"California Advertising-Minded" is the theme of this year's gathering over which Justis F. Craemer, Orange Daily News, will preside as president. On Friday morning, the publishers will hear about "Community Advertising" by Don Thomas, executive secretary of the All Year Club of Southern California and "Cooperative Advertising" by W.B. Geissinger, advertising manager of the California Fruit Grower's Exchange.
Two silver loving cups—one awarded by The Los Angeles Times for the best front page of a weekly newspaper member and the other by the State Chamber of Commerce for the best editorial page of a daily newspaper member—will be presented by Harry Chandler, publisher of The Times, and William May Garland, president of the Chamber to the winning publishers at Friday luncheon.

War Continues on Drunken Drivers
More Than 700 Lose Licenses in the Past Year
Warfare waged against the drunken driver continuously during 1928 by state traffic officers resulted in the revocation of the driving licenses of 708 persons for periods of one year or more.
This was announced by officials of the California Highway Patrol who said drunken驾驶 exceeded all other causes of revocation being responsible for nearly two-thirds of all revocations for the year.
The records show 1,162 persons in all were given official invitations to put their cars away for a year and try walking for a change.
Ninety-eight of these were involved in reckless driving charges. There were 534 license cancelled at the request of parents or guardians; the new motor vehicle act giving parents and guar-liams the right to evade responsibility for the acts of children by asking that licenses be cancelled.
Declaring the drunken driver is the most dangerous type of criminal on the road today, Frank G. Snook, Chief of the Division of Motor Vehicles, who launched the war on such drivers more than two years ago, has requested Eugene W. Biscalluz Superintendent of the Patrol, to continue every effort to get such drivers off the road.
Broadcast Status of Persimmon Industry
"California Persimmons Seek World Markets” will be the subject presented by Harold E. Wahlberg, Farm Advisor Orange County, over KFI next Thursday noon, 12 m., January 3. The marketing experience of the persimmon industry in Southern California during past year will be explained and some o fthe problems of this new industry outlined.
This year's crop of 1550 tons in South met a more receptive market than in 1928 because of the shortage of other deciduous fruits, such as peaches, pears, apples and plums. Shipments to Canada, England, Hawaii, South American and Australia were made by the Southern CaliforniaPersimmonGrowers Association.
"The workers do not take care of the queen' through any intelligent peruption of her value to the colony, but she has secretions which cover her whole body which they lick. Beetles have been living with termites almost as long as termites have been in existence (almost 100,000,000 years) and many are able to exploit the social intercourse of their hosts by giving forth glandular secreta-tains which causes the termites to feed and care for them much as they care for the various termite casts. The eggs of these beetles are of the same size as the termite eggs, an dthe termita-care for the beetle eggs much as they do their own.
"There are many other parallels between our own life an dthe life of these insects. The social insecta-are interesting to study, not only in order to learn how to control the damage they do to human possessions, but to discover the principles underlying social life itself."
We could think of a lot of New Year resolutions to suggest to the Senate but we are not saying anything about it.

The same association has waged an educational campaign among consumers to tell them how and when to eat fruit. Many people not acquainted with the fruit have been disappointed by eating it too green; that is to say when still hard and solid. Every box sent out by the association contains directions how to ripen the fruit and serve it.

Flappers Win Over Sheiks
Odds Favor Girls in Matrimonial Market
California girls, according to the state records, will carry the odds in the 1930 matrimonial betting ring.
Flppers will vanquish the shekls in great numbers, while spinsters will overcome wife-seeking bachelors by overwhelming majorities. If you have money to wager, state authorities declare, place it on the women by all means.
Quotations on the 1930 matrimonio market, according to the State Bureau of Vital Statistics, indicate victories for the "eternal feminine" in all classes.
For example, the odds are -13 to 1 against a man finding a wife in California during the 12 months of 1930.
In case of women, however, the odds are only 7 to 1.
A single man seeking his first bride faces oddes of 14.3 to 1, while the flapper or single girl is up against an 8 to 1 proposition.
Here's the lineup in other classes:
- Widowers, 13.8 to 1.
- Widows, 9 to 1.
- Divorced men, 3 to 1.
- Divorced men, 2½ to 1. (Remember, the fractions are the odds notthewomen.)
The state bases its betting quotations on marriage tables for last year which indicated a marriage rate of approximately $7.2 per thousand estimated population amongmenas comparedtoarateof117peroneowongenines.
