Going to Africa For Parasites Harold Compere Leaves for Abysinia Searching for Black Scale Enemies Harold Compere, entomologist of the University of California experiment station, left on Saturday on a nine month trip which will take him halfway around the world and has its goal the securing of certain parasites of the black scale, one of the most destructive of insect pests which affect citrus trees. Compere's destination is Abysinia, where he found robber ants obtain black scale parasites known to exist in that part of Africa. The method by which Compere expects to bring the black scale parasites back to California will necessitate taking living black scale to African Compere will take small palms which have been introduced with black scale with him. Upon reaching his destination he will attempt to obtain the parasites by parasitizing the black scale specimens. He will then bring back the parasites which during the trip will feed upon the scales taken from Riverside. If no serious difficulties are encountered, it is predicted that the parasites will be brought back to the experimental station late next summer. Because of quarantine restrictions Compere will go to Africa by the western route. He left Riverside Saturday and sailed for Japan Tuesday. In Japan he will transfer to an Italian liner for the remainder of the trip to Eritrea, the Italian colony in which the black scale parasites are to be found. The parasites which Compere scents were discovered several years ago by a former member of the citrus experiment station staff, Dr. F. Silverman, who went to Eritrea in search of enemies of the olive fly. Seven different species of black scale parasites were found, none of which occurs in California. These contrasting facts were brought out by Director of the state department of public health Dr. Walter M. Dickle at the governor's council meeting in a report on the death rate in California. But loyal Californians need not shudder at this apparent alarm on effect of the climate on elderly people. Migration of large numbers of adults who have reached the age of retirement and come here to spend their last years is blamed by Dr. Dickle for the high death rate. The low infant mortality is offered as proof by the health director that California is still a health paradise despite adverse figures. And to keep it such Orange county last year spent $61,304 in health conservation, according to Dr. Dickle. "Boosters for California can look on the bright side of this picture," Dr. Dickle declared. "Take the amount spent for health conservation, and the increase rate of mothers and babies. The former is well above the average in the United States and the latter consider only lower." Violent deaths are more numerous in California than in the rest of the United States, Dr. Dickle said. Suicides in this state for 1,28 number 20.4 per thousand, while elsewhere the rate was 13.6. Deaths from drowning were 14.2 per thousand here and out 7.1 for the rest of the states. Death from automobile accidents registered 38.5 per thousand in California and 20.8 in the remainder of the United States. "Outdoor mode of living probably has much to do with the high rate of most of the deaths listed above," Dr. Dickle asserted. These insects are now being propagated and colonized in groves, and its expected fate, the pest ultimately will be controlled by these parasites."
