THE TOWN DOCTOR (The Doctor of Towns) SAYS NEXT WEEK IS CHRISTMAS For the sake of those who have stood behind the counter from early morning till late at night trying to please you, satisfy and serve you well, I hope you did your shopping early. I hope there isn't too many boy and girl will find their stockings full to overflowing—that you will see to it that every boy and girl does have a Christmas. May everybody in Anaheim be happy, and merry this Christmas, and when the family circle gathers round the dinner table, may every heart be glad. No doubt there will be those with you this year who haven't been back to the old home town for months and months—perhaps years. There may be, too, those among you who never have been in Anaheim before. While they are "home," light of heart and gay, meeting old acquaintances and making new, show them Anaheim as it is today. Tell them what hopes you have for future growth, and ask them, when occasion arises, to say a good word for Anaheim. "Sell" them on the place where you live, work, play and make your money, so that wherever they go they will be emissaries creating prestige, goodwill, and who can tell, perhaps a new industry, new people, may come of it. "Sell" them, yes; but do not overdo it. Avoid dangerous optimism and superlatives. Remember there is no such thing as a "best" town. When a town is worst, it's bound to become better, but the community that is best could be no better, and there is no habitat that could not be improved upon. Again, I say, may Anaheim have a most joyful Christmas. Copyright, 1929, A. D. Stone. Reproduction prohibited in whole or in part. The Siskiyou and Crater National Forests of the North Pacific District, with headquarters in Portland, extend southward across the Oregon line and include within their boundaries 377,602 acres of government land in California. The total area of national forest land within the State of California is, therefore, 19,026,819 acres. The 150 national forests are administered by the U.S. Forest Service for the permanent public use of their resources. The principal resources are timber, water, forage and recreation. A fundamental principle in Forest Service administration is what is known as "sustained yield,"—the rate of utilization of wood or forage never exceeding the rate of growth and replacement. Water-shed protection is one of the most important national forest functions, as the permanency of water supply, regularity of stream flow and prevention of floods in many regions depend largely upon the condition of national forest watersheds. More than 780 cities and towns, 122 of which, with a total population of 3,000,000 people, are located in California, draw their domestic and municipal water supplies from the Federal forests. The two largest national forests are the Tongass and Chugach in Alaska, with net areas of 16,546,242 and 4,759,683 acres, respectively. The largest in the United States proper is the Tonto in Arizona, 2,262,044 acres. The State with the largest area of national forest land is Idaho with 19,300,000 acres. Thirty-one States and Territories now have national forests within their boundaries. The largest forest in California is the Santa Barbara with 1,175,678 acres of Government land. Seven other national forests in the State: Inyo, Klamath, Modoc, Plumas, Sequoia, Sierra and Trinity, each have a net acreage in excess of one million acres. The smallest national forest is the Cleveland in southern California with 380,589 acres, net. Within the national forests are 15 national monuments which are administered by the Forest Service for the preservation of objects of historic or scientific interest. Among these are: Devil Post Pile in Oregon Caves in Oregon; Mount Olympus in Washington; Gila Cliff Dwellings in New Mexico. Sixteen national game refuges are also wholly or partly within national forests. Supervisors Proceedings Bids were opened for the Resurfacing of the Horticultural Commissioner. Such was the import of figures released here by Joseph M. Schenck, president of United Artists Corporation and member of the California Highway Commission. "The motion picture industry now stands at the top of 35 basic industries in this state," Schenck said. "It is rated as the fourth greatest industry in the entire United States." "More than 85 per cent of the World's motion pictures are produced in America," he added. "Of this amount, fully 90 per cent are made in California. The film industry in this state now produces some 800 feature pictures annually and more than 2,000 comedies and other short subjects. These pictures are viewed in approximately 50,000 theaters throughout the world. From Schenck's figures it was apparent that the annual income for all theatres in California is about equal to the sum of $244,000,000 which the state expects to spend on all projects, equipment and upkeep during the next two years. Incidentally, about $250,000,000 already has been spent by the motion picture industry in equipping studios and theatres with sound apparatus—and the "talkles" are only one year old. The total of $108,500,000 included in the state highway budget for the next two years is less than ten per cent of the estimated $1,125,000,000 invested in the motion picture industry in California, and close to $20,000,000 less than the amount being spent each year on film production, the figures showed. As a matter of comparison, the army of Californians employed in the promotion of this most popular form of envehicle over the public highways and receiving compensation therefor. This automatically relieves thousands of persons driving their own vehicles for commercial purposes. Chauffeurs were notified in the division's announcement that they will be expected to renew their licenses on or before January 1st next. Applications for renewals will be received on and after December 1st. In making application for renewal, chauffeurs were instructed to secure blanks from division branch offices or automobile clubs and answer the questions thereon. Applications should be accompanied by the current year's card of the applicant and the fee sent by postal money order, check or bank draft. NOTICE OF SALE OF REAL PROPERTY BY TRUSTEE UNDER DEED OF TRUST. Whereas, by a certain Deed of Trust, dated October 3, 1928, recorded November 2, 1928, in Book 208, Page 428, of Official Records, Records of Orange County, to which record reference is hereby made for all of the provisions thereof, Arthur Petersen and Alma Petersen, husband and wife, did grant and convey the real property thereto described, being the real property hereinafter described, to the Southern Counties Securities Company, a corporation, of Anaheim, California, as Trustee, to secure, among other obligations, the payment of one certain promissory note dated October 3, 1928, made by said Arthur Petersen and Alma Petersen, husband and wife, to the Incidentally, about $250,000,000 already has been spent by the motion picture industry in equipping studios and theatres with sound apparatus—and the "talkies" are only one year old. The total of $108,500,000 included in the state highway budget for the next two years is less than ten per cent of the estimated $1,125,000,000 invested in the motion picture industry in California, and close to $20,000,000 less than the amount being spent each year on film production, the figures showed. As a matter of comparison, the army of Californians employed in the promotion of this most popular form of entertainment would be sufficient to pack all state highways standing ten abreast and as close together as possible, according to the information made available by Schenck. Wild Rabbits Have Fever Extreme Care Should Be Taken Before They Are Eaten Warning against "rabbit fever," or tularemia, was sounded by director of the state department of public health Dr. Walter M. Dickle in his monthly report to the governor. So far this year 15 cases of the disease have been reported in California. Hunters, housewives, butchers and other individuals who handle wild rabbits are susceptible to tularemia and should take extreme precautions. "Rubber gloves should be worn when handling wild rabbits," Dr. Dickle asserted. The disease is usually characterized by ulcers, which occur frequently on the fingers, although the ulcers may appear on other parts of the body. Glanular swellings follow appearance of the ulcers and are extremely painful. "A cold, chill, followed by chills and sweats, severe headache, aching pains in the back and extremities, vomiting and marked prostration and typical symptoms. The active state lasts for two or three weeks, with marked weakness, prostration and loss of weight. The convexence is of long duration, sometimes lasting for months and even years." Slow moving rabbits are to be shunned by hunters, for they are often afflicted with tularemia. Woodflies are to be avoided for they transmit the disease from infected rabbits to human beings. Chauffeurs' Licenses Reduced In Cost A 100 per cent reduction in the cost of chauffeurs' licenses, based on license schedules in the new motor vehicle act, was announced by the division of motor vehicles. The old annual fee for a chauffeur's license was $2.00. The new fee is $1.00. In addition, it was announced, new definitions of the term chauffeur in the act will relieve from 40,000 to 50,000 persons of the payment of any fee whatever. Under the new law, a chauffeur is a person employed by another for the principal purpose of driving a motor vehicle. TIMETABLE In effect June 9, 1929 A. T. & S. P. By.
