Here is an industry which was founded on vision, nourished on courage and which now, as ever, looks forward with full confidence toward the future, knowing that Mr. Edison and THAT NOTE of optimism which always has characterized the electrical industry of America is due, in no small measure, to the career of Mr. Edison. Here is an industry which was founded on vision, nourished on courage and which now, as ever, looks forward with full confidence toward the future, knowing that Mr. Edison and those others whose lives are dedicated to the work he established will have the ability to meet every obstacle that is encountered. No Golden Jubilee has ever been so permeated with the spirit of youth as that now being celebrated to commemorate the first incandescent lamp. It is no coincidence that the world's most notable progress has occurred during the half century which began on October 21, 1879. R. H. Ballard, President Southern California Edison Co. SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON COMPANY Bees Buzzing All Around California Greatest Honey Producer in the Union California bees, the most plentiful in the world, must have clean knees, it is decreed by the state department of agriculture. Orange county in 1928 had 370 bee keepers and 15,742 colonies, according to statistics of the state department of agriculture. Under the recently passed California Apiary Inspection Act all persons engaged in bee raising must register, or be made liable to fine. Registration of bees enables state officials more easily to supervise migration of the honey producers, which is recognized as the chief means of spreading bee diseases from one colony to another. All colonies discovered by the inspectors to contain diseased bees are burned. By means of this rigid inspection and eradication work, health conditions for the California bee industry have been improved. Most striking is the change in the bee situation in Contra Costa county, where apiaries showing disease dropped from 42 per cent in 1927 to 16 per cent last year. Beekeeping was introduced in California. Los Angeles to Have Airplane Exhibit More Than 150 Manufacturers To Show Their Planes More hat 150 manufacturers of airplanes and airplane accessories will be represented in exhibits at the first annual Western Aircraft Show, to be held at Los Angeles for eleven days starting on November 5, according to announcement by Cliff Henderson, managing director. The show, which is planned to be the greatest exposition of aviation development yet held, will be under the auspices of the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America. To house the exhibits a huge structure at Wilshire boulevard and Fairfax avenue is being got in readiness. The building will provide 100,000 square feet of floor space, of which 60,000 square feet will be set aside for sixty-five or seventy planes, the remaining space to be for booths in which will be displayed all of the latest aviation devices in the form of instruments for speed and height recording, parachutes, aviators' protective clothing, etc. Special facilities will be provided for close-up inspection of all the exhibits by the general public. Aviation experts will be on hand at all hours to explain the mechanism of the planes and the various uses of the accessories. It is announced. Trees and shrubbery are being set out in the building and a scenic background provided that will give a realistic setting to the displays. Entries are being received from manufacturers in Europe as well as all parts of the United States, the directors' state Henderson, who has general charge of the show, is director of the aircraft show division of the Aeronautical Chamber. He directed the 1929 National Air Races at Cleveland, Ohio, and the 1928 races at Los Angeles. Tustin Will Have Short Course School Orange county growers will be interested in learning that Tustin has been Tustin Will Have Short Course School Orange county growers will be interested in learning that Tustin has been selected for the next short course for citrus and walnut growers in the county by the executive committees of the Citrus and Walnut Departments of the Orange County Farm Bureau. This announcement has just been issued by Farm Advisor Harold E. Wahlberg. Tustin was selected this year because the courses have previously been held at Fullerton, Orange and Anaheim. It has been the policy of the Extension Service to rotate the course around the county. Principal J. W. Means of the Tustin High School has rearranged the schedule of school activities so as to accommodate the group lectures in the High School auditorium during the week of November 18 to 23, inclusive. The High School cafeteria will also be available to growers during the week. The sessions this year will continue through the entire week. The first two days will be devoted to subjects of general interest to both citrus and walnut growers. The third and fourth days will feature special lectures for citrus growers and the fifth and sixth days for walnut growers especially. The popularity of these courses is indicated by the growing attendance and enrollment each year. Three years ago at Fullerton the enrollment was 200; two years ago 305 at Orange, and last year over 500 at Anaheim. The Farm Bureau committees in charge are expecting even a larger attendance this year. The series of lectures will cover all important phases of citrus and walnut management, including soils, irrigation, fertilizers, pest control, orchard heating, windbreaks, cost of production, and harvesting methods. nia in 1853, but it was not until 1857 that it became important commercially. A shipment of 100 colonies was received here from Pennsylvania, and from this start California has become the leading beekeeping state in the nation, having an annual honey production of 8,000 tons. Ten million pounds of the yearly production are exported to foreign countries and other states. Like the horse, the bee was unknown in the United States before the coming of the white man. The majority of the bees buzzing around California today are Italian and Black bees. The Italian Bee was introduced into Roman society in the days of Julius Caesar and made its first debut in America some years later. The black bee was imported in Florida in 1763. breasted top - coats, double-breasted, Genuine Camel Hair topcoats $40.00 $45 F. A.
