New Volume Is Football Help
Well Known Athletic Instructor: Turns Author
Coach Howard Jones of the University of Southern California varsity blossomed out in the role of author today when his new book, "Football for the Fan," published in Los Angeles, was placed on sale.
Coach Jones' book explains the game for the layman and, according to sports editors here who have had a "preview" of it, is just what the fan needs to acquaint him with the fine points of football and increase his enjoyment of it. "Football for the Fan" explains all of the ramifications of the game in non-technical terms in order that spectators may be enabled to understand all types of football systems and follow the play no matter how intricate it becomes.
Many questions of the game asked of Coach Jones are answered in the book. One of the features being a chapter devoted entirely to answering the questions of Hollywood movie stars who are close followers of the Trojan team.
Alfred F. Wesson collaborated with Coach Jones in writing the book and Ted Cook, nationally known humorist and writer of "Cook-Coos," is the writer of its introduction.
Here are some excerpts from the comments of the six Los Angeles sports editors after they had had a "preview" of "Football for the Fan:
"It 80,000 football followers would carefully read Howard Jones' illuminating book, study his diagrams and digest his questions and answers before the day of the "big game," they would have a better understanding of what transpires on the field. I have never read its equal among football volumes."
—R. A. Cronin, sports editor, Illustrated Daily News.

Men In Demand
Information has been received at the farm bureau office, Santa Ana, that there is a shortage of men for important positions in the truck crop field. Norman M. Blaney, executive secretary of the farm bureau, reports that although seventy men are taking work in this field at the branch of the College of Agriculture at Davis, the positions offered during the last summer could not nearly be filled, according to Dr. H. A. Jones, head of the division of truck crops at Davis. Fifteen trained men for university work in truck crops could have been placed, says Professor Jones, if they had been available. In the commercial field, dozens of positions were open and every graduate was placed without meeting the demand.
"We have been able to supply men for only a small percentage of the openings in vegetable gardening. Most of the demand in California is for men to go with the canning industry, seed industry, growers and shippers of fresh vegetables, inspection services and large ranches of individual growers. It would be almost impossible to list the different types of jobs that are open in vegetable work here. The industry is so highly specialized. Last year we placed three men on large asparagus ranches of canning companies.
"There is considerable demand for men who are trained in vegetable breeding, especially men who know breeding technique. We are stressing breeding work in this division and we are attempting to save our men a thorough training in plant breeding. This summer we had ten of our major students working for the division during vacation. They are in touch with most of the breeding work and by the time they get our course and two or three years of experience they have a fairly good foundation. I think the demand for men well trained in vegetable work is here to stay."
This field of work is worth consideration by the young men of Orange county," stated Blaney.

Your Children ___ is their food safe?

During the month of September the entire country is studying refrigeration. For the first time this important subject is being observed from all angles. Women and men are awakening to the tremendously important part refrigeration plays in keeping their health and the health of their families above par.
September is National Food Preservation month. Until the end of the month a great deal of publicity will appear on the subject of protecting the food supply of the nation. Refrigeration is one of the most important links in the chain of producer to consumer. Lack of refrigeration at any step neutralizes the benefits that have been gained at other points. The consumer must realize this and see to it that his link in the chain is not the weak one. Read the articles that appear. Study refrigeration and what it means to you.
