AUTO NOTES
Co-operation of the oil industry of the state in an intensive safety campaign for the next year is the latest announcement of the California Committee on Public Safety, the state-wide organization representing nearly fifty representative bodies in the state. At the last meeting held in Los Angeles, it was reported that a definite plan has been submitted to the oil companies whereby each company will take prominent part in the adult safety education program of the state committee.
Not only is assurance had of full cooperation from the oil companies, but the state motor vehicle department, which is represented on the safety committee, announced that the California highway patrol created by the last legislature, and which becomes effective August 14, will co-operate in every way in the big state-wide program of making the highways safe for motorists and the public.
Further co-operation of the Allied Amusement Industries of the state, comprising some 600 theatres, also was announced. It developed from reports at the meeting that public school children are more familiar with correct signalling methods than are many adults.
Calling attention to the code of good manners in the forest recently issued by the Stop Forest Fires Committee, M. B. Pratt, state forester and chairman of the committee, points out that human thoughtlessness or carelessness causes over 70 per cent of all outdoor fires in California.
The state forester urges that all who go into forest lands observe the following personal code:
1. First secure a camp fire permit, issued free by all federal and state forest officers, automobile clubs and other authorized agents.
2. Carry a shovel and axe suitable for fire fighting.
3. Smoke only in camp or at places of habitation.
4. Put your camp fire dead out with a plentiful supply of water.
5. Leave a clean and sanitary camp ground.
6. Observe the state fish and game laws.
Rustic Wood Can Be Protected From Insects
When rustic buildings and rustic furniture are to be made from trees cut during the spring and summer months, while various bark beetles are very active, and especially when it is desired to retain the bark on the logs, they should be treated as soon as cut with either crude pyridine or coal-tar creosote.
These liquids are effective when diluted with kerosene in the proportion of one part of the chemical to three parts of kerosene, says the Bureau of Entomology of the United States Department of Agriculture. Where a slight staining of the wood from the treatment is objectionable the same protection can be obtained by carefully removing the bark in sections, applying the solutions to the sapwood, and then replacing the bark with large square-headed nails.
Crude pyridine is a colorless, nearly stainless liquid, possessing a strong disagreeable odor. Because of this odor logs or furniture should be treated in the open, some distance from any dwell ing. If it is necessary to apply this chemical inside a building, the doors and windows should be opened for ventilation. A windy day is preferable. Pyradine is inflammable, and reasonable care should be taken in handling it. In treating overhead wood, as in ratters any liquid dripping down may burn the skin slightly or be painful if it comes in contact with the eyes. Before using creosote it should be strained through boiler or it may stain the wood darker than is desired.

With the opening of northern highway entrances into the state and the travel check made by the State Department of Agriculture, conclusive evidence is at hand that Southern California is having a heavy invasion of motor tourists, according to the touring bureau of the Automobile Club of Southern California.
During the winter months the heaviest travel comes to the state through the southern routes of Blythe, Daggett and Yuma. With the advent of warm weather in the north, some 18 additional entrances into the state are made available and these contribute heavily to the influx of cars.
Of the 21 routes checked for the month of May, only three are in Southern California, six are on Oregon border and twelve on the Nevada border. Although many of these routes did not open until late in May, the total check shows that there were 34,377 cars entered the state during the month, carrying 92,768 persons.
Of these cars, 16,979, or approximately one-half, bore out-of-state licenses. Since approximately 75 per cent of the cars entering the state reached Southern California, there were nearly 13,000 cars from other states entering Southern California territory during the month of May. These carried approximately 40,000 out-of-state visitors.
Spraying of nearly all of the road-sides against puncture vine in the San Fernando Valley has been completed by the county horticultural department.
Since the irrigation of the bean crops in the area and the rise intemperature, the growth of the vine has been more rapid, according to the report. Control is being effected by three power pumps mounted on motor trucks. Active interest is taken by the motoring organization in the eradication of the puncture vine, and persons knowing roads where the vine is found are urged to send information to the club.
All roads to be built under the $5,-000,000 highway program now in effect in New Mexico will be considerably wider than previous types. This extended width will depend upon the type of surfacing to be placed on the road. Oil surfacing projects will probably be all built with twenty feet of surfacing

This extended width will depend upon the type of surfacing to be placed on the road. Oil surfacing projects will probably be all built with twenty feet of surfacing and two feet of shoulder on both sides. This will allow three cars to pass in safety as well as preventing the sides of the road from giving away, cracking and injuring the surfacing material.
And now we come to the topic of this writing. Without wanting to supply ammunition for boasters, but desiring to give facts to those who sometimes have to listen day after day to what might be termed carping criticism we give the following facts just announced by H. G. Hecke, director of the California Department of Agriculture: California, among all the states of the nation, holds first rank in the production of oranges, lemons, grapes, peaches Pears, plums, prunes, cherries, figs, dates, olives, walnuts, almonds, asparagus, lettuce, melons, cantaloupes, cauliflower, carrots green peas for the table, spinach for canning, tomatoes for manufacture, lima beans and alfalfa California is not first in alfalfa acreage, but is first in alfalfa production, because of larger yields.
The Maine road from the National Old Trails route to the south rim of the Grand Canyon is not advisable at this time. Many detours are in evidence and the road throughout consists of unsurfaced dirt. It is particularly bad during and immediately after rains. Considerable rain may be expected in this section during August of each year.
The construction work which has been under way for some time on the Coast Highway between Arroyo Grande and Plamo Beach is now completed. This highway through Plamo Beach consists of concrete in its entirety.
MORE MILK; FEWER COWS
The number of milk cows on the farms of the United States has changed only slightly in recent years. The number increased from 21,408,000 in 1921 to 22,523,000 in 1925, and then decreased to 21,824,000 last year and 21,820,000 on January 1. 1929. Production has kept up largely because of better breeding and feeding of the smaller number of cows. The number of yearling heifers and heifer calves kept for milk cows is now larger than for last year, but is less than one per cent larger than the number ordinarily required to maintain the present number of milk cows. Changes in the number of cows milked during the next two years will depend says O. E. Reed, chief of the Bureau of Dairy Industry, United States Department of Agriculture, largely on the relation between the price of beef and the price of dairy products, for this affects both the age at which milk cows are sold for slaughter and the number of beef-type cows milked.
