THE TOWN DOCTOR (The Doctor of Towns) SAYS THE TRUTH OFTEN HURTS To tell a man of his good points seldom, if ever, tends toward his betterment. It may sort of perk him up a bit, but usually it makes him vain, and lowers his resistance in the battle of doing things by throwing him off guard. Flattery is an ensnaring quality and leaves a very dangerous impression. It swells a man's imagination, and his head as well, it entertains his vanity, and drives him to a doting upon his own person. Some communities get so full of ego and become so puffed up from "soft soap" and blarney, handed out by individuals who usually have an axe to grind, that the residents think theirs is the essence of perfection. "Stuck up" communities are as bad as "stuck up" people. They get so cock-sure of themselves that they are blind as a bat to everybody's imperfections but their own. When a community gets to the point that all it is interested in is conversation about its own wonderfulness, that community is due for a fall. It is a serious mistake to court only the society of those who please. It doesn't always pay to choose friends altogether from those who flatter. The ones who are truthful will be of real benefit, for they will tell you the truth—things you ought o know. The truth often hurts, and there are some who are not BIG enough to take it. Such people are small minded, they wince at the pain, get sore, sulk and pout, overlooking the fact that the real test of qualities for permanent success is ability to gain by criticism. The man who seeks to beter himself accepts constructive criticism as such; he offers no alibis and doesn't try to "crawfish." Yours IS a good town—no question about that. It has many fine features, many attractions, a multitude of good, hard-working boosters; in fact, it's an even chance that your community has advantages that, because you are so familiar with them, you lose sight of, under-estimate and fail to appreciate. But it is the things that REPEL that retard the progress—those things that invite will take care of themselves. Copyright, 1923, A. D. Stone. Reproduction prohibited in whole or in part. NEW LEGAL CLINIC Assuring free legal assistance to those in difficulty and in need of help, a legal aid clinic, introduced as an experiment last year, is to become a permanent part of the Law School of the University of Southern California with the opening of the September semester, according to announcement of President R. B. von KleinSmid. The director is to be John Bradway of Philadelphia, secretary of the National Association of Legal Aid Organizations. Indigent but worthy men and women. The fact that the clinic is set up to handle such cases relieves the client from the feeling that he is accepting charity. A new NEW LEGAL CLINIC Assuring free legal assistance to those in difficulty and in need of help, a legal aid clinic, introduced as an experiment last year, is to become a permanent part of the Law School of the University of Southern California with the opening of the September semester, according to announcement of President R. B. von KleinSmid. The director is to be John Bradway of Philadelphia, secretary of the National Association of Legal Aid Organizations. He will supervise the advanced law students in the handling of cases. They will work in co-operation with the bar, the courts, public officials and social agencies. The new legal aid clinic is underwritten by the Southern California Legal Aid Association, headed by President Guy Crump of the Los Angeles Bar association. Offices will be maintained in the Law School building of the University of Southern California. Cases may readily be referred to the legal clinic by attorneys, public officials, social service workers and the public, with the assurance that each will be examined and steps will be taken to effect a prompt and practical settlement, states Dean Justin Miller of the S. C. Law School. A client will not be accepted, however, who is able to pay a practicing attorney a regulation fee for his services. Types of cases to be handled include loan and other money claims, breach of contract, workmen's compensation, personal injury, settlement of estates, landlord and tenant relationships, domestic difficulties, and libel and slander cases. Many professions, boards, commissions, the bar, the courts, and social welfare groups will meet at the legal clinic of the University of Southern California to solve problems besetting indigent but worthy men and women. The fact that the clinic is set up to handle such cases relieves the client from the feeling that he is accepting charity. On the other hand, the clinic provides an internship whereby a law student may bridge over the gap between theoretical training and actual professional practice Trojan law students will take charge of cases, obtain evidence, examine witnesses, prepare pleadings and effect settlements, with the exception of presenting the cases in court. "Such clinics are in successful operation at Harvard, Yale, Northwestern, Minnesota and Cincinnati universities," states Dean Miller. "They are largely of post-war establishment. In this rapidly developing region embracing roughly one-fifth of continental United States, the University of Southern California is taking the lead in training those who must solve the manifold legal problems that attend the growth of one of the richest sections of the world. The Law School at Southern California is the only Class A school of law in the southwestern area. The nearest to the east are 2,000 miles distant, and the nearest to the north are 500 miles away." "Experience shows that a legal aid bureau handling 5,000 cases a year costs in the neighborhood of $20,000 to $25,000. It is estimated that the cost of operation of a clinic in co-operation with the Law School of the University of Southern California will entail about one-half that amount. By placing at the disposal of the clinic the services of the upperclassmen and by absorbing much of the expense of maintenance and operation, the clinic conducted in conjunction with the law school can do twice as much work for the same expenditure of money that an independent agency can do." As a result the show promises also to be one of the most unique exhibitions ever seen in the Southland. Here there will be gathered more than 2,500 entries representing over 200 different species of fowls, many of which the average person never dreamed existed. The show will be by far the largest on the Pacific slope this year and will include an exhibition of rare fowls by the Association of Rare and Fancy Fowl Breeders of California. There will also be exhibits by the Pacific Coast Bantam Association, by the California Black’ Giant Association, the Pacific Coast Cornish club, the West Coast Turkey Breeders Association and many others. In addition to the exhibits all of these organizations will hold their annual meetings during the fair. The result will be that the county fair will become the mecca for leading poultry breeders of the west. In line with the general educational idea of the fair this department, like all of the others, is being made so attractive that it will be of absorbing interest even to those who have not the slightest interest in fowls. Not only will there be practically every breed of chickens, but there will be rare breeds of ducks, geese, and other water fowls. Judges this year will include G. W. Hackett, manager of the International Turkey Show in Chicago last winter; Fred W. Ott, superintendent of Madison Garden Show, New York; F. W. Tarbill director of the Illinois State Poultry Association; A. G. Goodacre of Gardena and F. W. Thott of Pasadena. Women motorists are enthusiastic about Biltmore seat covers, the harmonizing patterns of which combine smart appearance, utmost comfort and complete clothing protection, advises V. F. Cruzen, local manager of the Western Auto Supply company. More and more women automobile owners are equipping their cars with seat covers, as they hesitate to risk soiling dainty apparel on dust gathering upholstery. That the uncovered upholstery is a collector of dust and dirt is plainly shown by a simple test. Slap the upholstered seat cushion in the car hard. Then feel the dust and grime between the fingers that came from the cushion. It is easy to imagine the damage this dirt causes.
