L. A. County Fair
To Be Great Show
Eighth Annual Fair at Pomona Stretches Over Ten Acres
"Picture ten solid acres of prize exhibits representing the very essence of southland achievement in agricultural horticultural civic and industrial endeavor all in a gloriously colorful setting of ancient Egypt. Surround it by a track filled with the fastest race horses on the Pacific slope. Add a brilliant night horse show and thousands of head of the finest stock in the nation. And one just has a glimpse of the eighth Los Angeles County Fair at Pomona."
This is the rather unique and comprehensive answer just formulated by President Charles P. Curran of the board of directors of Los Angeles County Fair to answer the question "well how does the fair look this year?" which is hurled at him almost incessantly as September 17, the opening day, approaches.
While the exhibits under cover will occupy ten acres this year, the entire fair grounds cover 107 acres, including the big tract where another great permanent building measuring 800 by 150 feet is now in the course of construction at a cost of $260,000. Seventy judges including many foremost authorities in the nation will be required to determine the winners in the great number of departments. It is announced that approximately 2,000 separate contests will have to be passed upon by the judges. It is believed that this number is a record anywhere in the country.
A grand total of $75,000 has been set aside for cash and trophy awards, while $20,000 will be distributed in prizes at the night horse show and $16,000 at the afternoon race programs.
It is estimated that over 7,500 individual heads of livestock, pet stock and poultry will be entered this fall. This should make both the poultry and the livestock shows the greatest west of the Rockies this year. Over 200 of the great stars as Rethberg, Queena Mario, Nina Morana, Kathryn Melalele, Leon Rothier, Danise DeLauca, Lauri-Vohl and Tito Schipa will be heard. One of the splendors of this October season will be the new scenery for these elevators. "We have practically rebuilt our entire scenic equipment" says Meo Armitage, manager, "and I prophy that it will be a revelation to open-goers of Southern California." The seat sale campaign, of which Mr. Richard J. Schweppe is generalissimo, continues throughout August and is having an unprecedented success.
Walnut Pest Control Now in Progress
Recent inspections indicate heavy aphis infestations north of the Santa Ana river, and medium to heavy infestations around Santa Ana and Tustin. It is therefore advisable for all walnut growers to inform themselves of conditions in their groves at this time and treat if necessary.
Walnut aphis is a soft bodied insect which feeds on the under side of the leaves, sucking out the plant juices and thereby weakening the tree. The aphis also gives off honey-dew—a sticky material—which covers the leaves. A sooty mold fungus grows on the leaves where this honey-dew is present, covering them to such an extent that they cannot function normally. This condition of the leaves is largely responsible for blanks, shriveled and amber kernels. In fact aphis is one of the most serious single factors affecting the quality of walnuts.
A large number of growers have already dusted for aphis since spraying early in the season for codling moth and aphis control. But those growers who have not given this second application should attend to this matter immediately.
Fortunately walnut aphis is easily controlled by an application of weak biofuel dust—2½% to 3% Bioclean 16 is the strength commonly used. This treatment, labor and materials included, under commercial conditions costs approximately $4.00 per acre. If self-mixed material is applied, using hydrated lime as a carrier and one ounce great stars as Rethberg, Queena Mario, Nina Morana, Kathryn Melalele, Leon Rothier, Danise DeLauca, Lauri-Vohl and Tito Schipa will be heard. SEASON OF GRAND OPERA
Eight of the greatest composers of opera of all time will be represented by their foremost and most successful works during the season of nine performances which the Los Angeles Grand Opera association gives at the Shrine Civic Auditorium, beginning October 1st. The immortal Verdi, a veritable giant and one of the most prolific and successful opera composers in history, is represented by Alda, Rigoleto and Il Trovatore. Puccini, one of the modern masters, will be represented by one of his earlier and one of his latest works, La Boheme and Gianni Schieci, respectively. Donizetti's masterpiece The Elixir of Love, is to be given possibly its first presentation in Los Angeles and Von Flotow's Martha is an established favorite here. Hansel and Gretel is a fantastic inspiration of Humperdinck.
Pagliaceli is undoubtedly the outstanding work of Leoncavallo. Massenet has never surpassed his Manon, one of the most brilliant and savage works in all operatic literature, while Rossini's Barber of Seville has delighted audiences of every race nationality. The casts which the association has assembled for these works assures them of having superb performances for such quality of walnuts.
A large number of growers have already dusted for aphis since spraying early in the season for coding moth and aphis control. But those growers who have not given this second application should attend to this matter immediately.
Fortunately walnut aphis is easily controlled by an application of weak miloine dust—2½% to 3% Blackleaf it is the strength commonly used. This treatment, labor and materials included, under commercial conditions costs approximately $4.00 per acre. If self-mixed material is applied, using hydrated lime as a carrier and one quart of Blackleaf 40 per 100 lbs., the cost is approximately $3.00 per acre. In using the self-mixed material the duster should be in good working condition so that the Blackleaf 40 is thoroughly mixed with the lime. This method requires more time than using the ready mixed material, as it is necessary to let the machine run for a few minutes before applying the dust to the trees.
Where heavy aphis infestations have blackened the leaves, causing them to fall early, the walnuts are left exposed. Such a condition followed by extremely hot weather occurred during the first week in September last year and resulted in a large tonnage of sunburned nuts.
Now is the time for the walnut grower to take into consideration the serious effect aphis has on the quality of his crop. As has been said before "Quality pays big dividends."
FARM POPULATION
The farm population of the United States is now said to be the lowest in twenty years. The Bureau of Economics of the Agricultural Department estimates our farm population January 1, at 27,511,000 as compared with a peak of 32,000,000 in 1909.

advertising for many years most of us have been sold for a short time anyway but now comes a statement from one of the world's most conservative men: indeed the entire world must be convinced of the possibilities of advertising. President Coolidge, hunker-de-luxe, recently said, "Advertising is the life of trade." That makes it unanimous.
Sure, advertising pays and great fortunes have been built through advertising. Also, money has been lost in advertising but "there's a reason." Perhaps the money was not lost, it was merely thrown away.
Advertising is a profession and not a game; the advertising man who is a credit to his profession must know merchandising and must know how to survey his product and his market as well as know type faces and good color combinations. Speed the day when it will be impossible for any man, regardless of his lack of knowledge of advertising and merchandising, to rent an office and a typewriter and pose as an advertising counselor. If we are physically ill we talk to our doctor, if we are financially ill we consult our banker unless he talks to us first. If we are in need of legal advice we call in a lawyer; why call in a plumber, a preacher or a painter when we need advertising services?
Advertising has to pay and only a qualified man can make it pay. I admit there are wastes in advertising, but may I remind you that there are also wastes in production, distribution and personal selling. The properly qualified man or agency can reduce the waste to the minimum.
What is the best advertising medium? There is only one answer—any advertising is good that brings results. Advertising is no longer guesswork if a serious effort is made to learn the truth.
Many firms are still making donations to this and that cause and charging it against their advertising budgets. We all have worthy causes to which we wish to contribute but why not call
Gets the “Dope” on Soil Fertilization
The California Soil Improvement Association, in attempting to answer the problem of how best to fertilize deciduous groves, has turned to the experimental grove maintained by George P. Weldon of Chaffey Union High school, on East Sixth stret. Prof. Weldon was appointed by the association two years ago to conduct experiments in soil fertilization at the Chaffey deciduous grove, the association appropriating $600 per year for the experiments to be conducted over a five-year period. The experiment is now in its second year, and Prof. Weldon has secured considerable valuable information about diversified methods of fertilization already.
Where a "complete fertilizer"—nitrogen, phosphoric acid and potash has been used the foliage is abundant and rich in color, and the young fruit is abundant. Where phosphoric acid and potash only are used, the trees are superior to those which were not fertilized, but not as good as those which received the "complete" mixture. Nitrogen and potash are being tried and the results are satisfactory. Nitrogen

has been used alone, but it is evident that it is not sufficient. Nor does potash used alone show satisfactory results. Nitrogen is evidently an important factor in fertilization. Potash and phosphoric acid have been used with a cover crop and this combination, the nitrogen being obtained from the cover, has proved good, the trees so treated showing a splendid development of branch and foliage, with an abundance of fruit.
While the experiment is far from complete the results so far indicate that nitrogen is a first requirement of satisfactory fertilization, with potash also an important ingredient. When this year's fruit crop is harvested, fruit from the various plots will be graded and weighed and comparisons made. Additional experiments will be carried on during the coming three years, and when the entire period is concluded Weldon expects to be in a position to make an authoritative report to the association. Local peach growers often visit the experimental tract to get first-hand information.
Misses Elizabeth and Rose Donnelly returned on Saturday from Honolulu, where they have spent a delightful vacation.
