Gazette Receives Chinese Letter Reverend Hallock Writes From Shanghai to This Paper From Shanghai, China, mysterious city of a more myterious land, comes another interesting letter sent to the editor by one of the Christian missionaries of that country, the Rev. H. G. C. Hallock. With the great Oriental nation filled with dread and foreboding at this time, the communication sheds a more optimistic light upon her. The letter follows: C. P. O. Box No. 1234, Shanghai, China, June 27th, 1929. Anaheim Gazette, Anaheim, Calif. Dear Editor:— Here comes a letter from this land of intrigue, graff, warfare, famine, suffering, chaos, to tell you and the readers of your excellent paper about China's new woman who has a share in the "goings-on." If a woman in China, twenty years ago, had been given a Rip Van Winkle sleep, she would be more surprised than he was, should she awake today. Then women had to stay indoors and work something like domestic animals. Or, if of a better family, be cooped up at home and stay there. She was allowed to be seen only by the husband or brothers. Now what a change! The modern Chinese young women skip around the streets with a spring, grace and freedom that's quite refreshing when one remembers the women formerly hobbling along on bound feet supported by amanha. Now girls bob, shingle, or permanent wave their hair. That's a sign of freedom! They ride bicycles, play tennis, basketball and engage in other athletics. Formerly the parents arranged their marriage. Now one often sees the young ladies walking very affectionately arm in arm with their "best boys," and the young people often do the arranging. The dress used to be the most modest of any LETTER FROM MR. LUCAS The following letter from Stuart H. Lucas, president of the Water Users' Association, is self-explanatory: July 19, 1929. To the Orange County Board of Supervisors, Santa Ana, Calif. Gentlemen:— We are in receipt of your reply to our request that you give us some information as to why the upper site could not be used for a dam, acknowledging the receipt of same, and that you referred us to Mr. Bailey's report. We have read Mr. Bailey's report very carefully. Mr. Bailey does not say it could not be used for a dam site, in fact he said it would be a SAFE site. But he makes arguments against it. The main strength of his argument is based upon the possibilities of litigation in respect to the upper site. As your attorney advising you on this matter, you had the attorney for the very ones with whom we would have litigation in case we determined upon the upper site. He probably had the same effect upon Mr. Bailey as he would have upon you. There is indeed more than a suspicion that in the appointment of the committee, when you appointed representatives from each of these water companies on the committee, and then employed their attorney to direct and advise you, that the whole program was a program of the water companies rather than of the people. As I have said, we have read Mr. Bailey's report and his arguments, and in view of the fact that nearly every engineer with whom we have come in contact agrees with Mr. Bailey in his government report when he declared the Prado site was the best in all Southern California; and his statement to you of its availability was the result of real engineering data, and that they give little weight to the arguments which he raises against the site, leads us to press this question more firmly to your attention. This fact is significant when one realizes that in answer to the direct question at Laguna Beach of Mr. Bailey "What was the reason against the upper site?" he said "Damages;" and Editor H. Beach Scribe & Testimonial Pullo The board of six instructed District Jr., to subpoena of the Newport chairman of the commission committee, next Tuesday to oak which it was reissued a portion beautification in county park but community's new control bonds. Opp was repaired before the bond "coldly received nothing could go so far as the concerned." Prior to the Jeffrey, supervise trict, is reported "assured member committee that done in order, the county will beauty plan and budget. An unnamed story as having wish to repress him he shows fuses to do that the recall." Jeffrey denies that he had Costa Mesa board had denied and other men unable to receive O.P. to have stated before the board Publication. Chinese young women skip around the streets with a spring, grace and freedom that’s quite refreshing when one remembers the women formerly hobbling along on bound feet supported by amahs. Now girls bob, shingle, or permanent wave their hair. That’s a sign of freedom! They ride bicycles, play tennis, basketball and engage in other athletics. Formerly the parents arranged their marriage. Now one often sees the young ladies walking very affectionately arm in arm with their “best boys,” and the young people often do the arranging. The dress used to be the most modest of any nationality. Now women are often seen with short sleeves and very low-necked frocks even at mid-day. Sometimes they’re seen with the most up-to-date up-beyond-the-knee short frocks and filimay silk hose and very high-heeled shoes. Indeed the Chinese girls are quite amusing flapper sometimes—shocking sometimes—so much so that the officials have felt it necessary to issue proclamations commanding them to dress modestly. The girls have even learned to dirt in the most up-to-date way. That’s freedom! They dance in the latest style. They ride horses astride, with boots and riding breeches. "That's English, you know." Once the ideal for girls was that they be able to do beautiful needle-work at home. Now they are doing other things. They are clerks in stores; some are typists and stenographers. Some are bankers. They play the organ or piano or other musical instruments. Some are becoming movie artists and actresses. Some are lawyers and judges and doctors, some are teachers and kindergarteners. They even become soldiers and sometimes they become generals' secretaries! Women also become street-corner politicians and scream the revolutionary platitudes, such as "Down with Imperialism!" "Give the people freedom," to beat the most zealous men revolutionaries. Rarely do you see meetings for propaganda or riots without seeing girls or women take active part in them; urging on the riots. I am glad to say that some few of them are taking part in the Red Cross work in relieving the suffering of those wounded in battle. Women, too, occupy place of influence in the government of Nanking. Once women's faces lacked all hope and ambition, and there are still great hosts of women who are the same drudges at home or—worse—in grat factories. But among the younger generation they have ambition—ambition that carries them to extremes. I'm glad to say that there are many modest, motherly women who have gone through our mission schools who are making nice, clean, beautiful Christian homes, where the children are brought up well and taught to be good useful members of society, children of whom they and missions can be proud and thankful. One can not expect great things from a nation in which the people have been brought up for ages in fifth, physical and moral; but a new generation is coming on, born anew in the church of Christ and in these clean Christian homes. We are expecting much for China from such engineer with whom we have come in contact agrees with Mr. Bailey "What was the reason against the upper site?" he said "Damages;" and when asked "From whom?" he said "Principally from the water companies." How can this harmonize again with the attorney for these same water companies advising you and Bailey as to which is the wisest thing to do? We were therefore writing you as representatives of the people, hoping you could give us specific reasons not why the upper site "should not" be used, but why it "could not" be used; and incidentally may we ask why Linpncott's report was shelved without any investigation or opinion asked on it? In other words, gentlemen, when we ask for your reasons you refer us to a report which you and your committee directed; what we wanted to do was to get back of these machinations to your real reasons, if any. Owing to the mass of information brought to us by our former inquiry, and as we trying to acquire this information for the benefit of the voters I am seding a copy of this letter to the newspapers of the county. Yours very truly, STUART H. LUCAS, President Water Users Association. La Habra Editor Sells Interest A. V. Douglass, founder of the La Habra Star, with which he has been associated for the past 14 years, has sold his interest in the paper to L. M. Hopper, who has been connected with the Star for the past 12 years. The transaction gives Hopper a half interest in the newspaper, which is a semi-weekly. Hopper's partner, A. W. McBride, has been connected with the paper in various capacities for the past ten years, and will continue as active head of the paper as editor and publisher. McBride purchased a half interest in the publication from Douglas a year ago. To prove that women are more easily satisfied than men, just look at some of the husbands that the dear ladies have picked. I'm glad to say that there are many modest, motherly women who have gone through our mission schools who are making nice, clean, beautiful Christian homes, where the children are brought up well and taught to be good useful members of society, children of whom they and missions can be proud and thankful. One can not expect great things from a nation in which the people have been brought up for ages in filth, physical and moral; but a new generation is coming on, born anew in the church of Christ and in these clean Christian homes. We are expecting much for China from such. Things are out of joint in China; but we hope and pray that the common sense of better Chinese and the deeply planted power of the Gospel will gradually overcome the criminal influences and that China will find peace, prosperity, and a place among the great nations of the world. Yours in Christ's glad service. (REV.) H. G. C. HALLOCK. Christian Science Church "Truth" is the subject of the lesson-sermon Sunday in all churches of Christ Scientist, branches of the Mother Church, the First Church of Christ Scientist, in Boston, Mass. The Bible verses in the lesson-ermon cited in the Christian Science Quarterly, are from both the Old and the New Testaments and include these reassuring words of Isaiah regarding the fruits of righteousness: "He that walketh righteously, and speeketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that eaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shut-teth his eyes from seeing evil; he shall dwell on high; his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks; bread shall be given him; his waters shall be eure." One of the correlative passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," contains the following admonition and assurance of Mary Baker Eddy: "In the science of mind-healing, it is imperative to be honest, for victory rests on the side of innuttable right. To understand God strengthens hope, enthrones faith in truth, and verifies Jesus' word: 'Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.' Editor Haled Before Board Beach Scribe Summoned to Give Testimony Regarding Publication The board of supervisors on Tuesday instructed District Attorney Z B. West Jr., to subpoena Sam Meyer, publisher of the Newport News and Fred Opp, chairman of the Costa Mesa beautification committee, to appear before it next Tuesday to explain the publication of a story in the Newport News, in which it was reported that the supervisors had repudiated a promise to include a portion of the Costa Mesa beautification highway project in the county park budget because of that community's negative vote on the flood control bonds. Opp was reported to have appeared before the board and to have been "coldly received and curtly told that nothing could be done for Costa Mesa, so far as the county park's fund was concerned." Prior to the bond election George Jeffrey, supervisor from the fifth district, is reported, in the story, to have "assured members of the beautification committee that if certain things were done in order to pay the legal way, the county would help the highway beauty plan and include it in next year's budget. An unnamed person is quoted in the story as having said, "if he does not wish to represent the people who elected him he should resign, and if he refuses to do that, we can always invoke the recall." Jeffrey denies the report in the story that he had "heatlessly declared that Costa Mesa vote was the reason the board had denied the request." Jeffrey and other members of the board were unable to recall the reported appearance of Opp. Opp himself is reported to have stated that he did not appear before the board last Tuesday. Publication of the story is said to field, operating in contiguous territory. Additional trucks are badly needed. State Forester M. B. Pratt announced it particularly, to work out of Redding at J Santa Cruz. Each of the fire-fighting trucks carries a maximum capacity of 275 gallons of water, with motor-driven pumps, four lines of hose and other field equipment, including a heavy cross-cut saw, sledger, falling wedge, crowbars and a powerful searchlight for night duty. The traks can be filled either from a stream by an intake suction pump, by gravity, or from a regulation city fire hydrant, adapting their use to grass, grain or forest fires, or conflagrations threatening communities. Attesting to the efficiency of the new equipment, State Forester Pratt declared that the latest report from the fire front credited one of the big fire engines with conquering a fire on a three-mile front in 45 minutes. An estimated saving of $41,700 as a result of rapid fire suppression made possible by the trucks, was announced today by State Forest Inspector R. V. Wood in his lower San Joaquin Valley district. Similar reports, Pratt said, have come from other districts where the modern fire engines are in action. Built especially for the state service on recommendation of Gov. Young's forest fire committee and State Forester Pratt, the fire trucks were planned by "Western Most-Talked" Such savings are Few and Far Between and then—Only at "Western Auto"...! Last Day Saturday, August 3rd An unnamed person is quoted in the story as having said, "if he does not wish to represent the people who elected him he should resign, and if he refuses to do that, we can always invoke the recall." Jeffrey denies the report in the story that he had "heatly declared that Costa Mesa vote was the reason the board had denied the request." Jeffrey and other members of the board were unable to recall the reported appearance of Opp. Opp. himself is reported to have stated that he did not appear before the board last Tuesday. Publication of the story is said to have caused considerable commotion in Costa Mesa and a meeting was held to discuss the situation. Jeffrey aid that he had once expressed his willingness to see what could be done about aiding the Costa Mesa beautification project. That a definite request had been presented, or that it had been denied, was denied by Jeffrey and the board. The hour for the appearance of Meyer and Opp before the board probably will be set for 11 a.m. At that time the matter will be gone into in an effort to determine what foundation there was for the story. Add New Engines To State’s Fire Force Forest Service to Get Four Additional Fast Trucks Practical assurance that the State Board of Forestry's fleet of fast firefighting trucks—the fire engines of California's fields and forests—will be increased to eight in the immediate future was given by State Director of Finance A. R. Heron. With four of the forest fire engines already in service, Heron announced that in view of the established effectiveness of the new equipment in suppressing dangerous fire it is planned to rush the building of four additional trucks authorized for next year. "Thousands of acres already have been saved from destruction by the state's new motorized equipment," said Heron, "while the second fleet of four trucks was not scheduled to go into service until next year, the money for their construction has been budgeted and I am confident the financial set up can be arranged to permit building of the additional equipment for use this summer." The state's speedy fire engines now in service, specially built to meet the exacting conditions and emergencies of forest fire fighting, are stationed at Riverside, Ukiah, Auburn and Palms. “Klassy” Step Plates Buy one for $145 Get One FREE!
