Jim Talbot's "Miss Los Angeles II" Set for Record
When "Miss Los Angeles II," Jim Talbot's swift new hydroplane, just launched here, slips into the water at Detroit on August 31 to battle for America and the Harmsworth trophy, its 24-cylinder engines, each 1,000 horsepower, will be humming, "California, Here We Come."
For the huge hydroplane, biggest and fastest ever built in the West, is practically 100 per cent a Californian.
Listen to this:
Owner—Jim Talbot Jr., famous young California sportman whose speed boats the Golden State;
Builder—Hugh M. Angelman, who signed and built the craft at his Wilmington, Calif., boat works;
Engine Maker—Harry A. Miller, whose California-created power plants in racing cars and speed boats have proved the fastest ever constructed at home or abroad;
Pilot—Ralph Snoddy, native Californian, whose many speed boat victories were climaxed early this summer when he coped the Duke of York trophy on the Thames with another of Talbot's speed creations;

In a recent bulletin from the Bureau of Dairy Industry it was reported that if the average yearly production of the dairy cows in this country could be increased from 4.600 pounds of milk to 7.457 pounds which is the present average of the cows on test in cowtesting associations,我们 would supply the present per capita consumption of dairy products from 14 million instead of 22 million dairy cows. Feed for these higher producers would cost more per cow but a greater saving in total feed in labor,and in overhead expenses would result. Besides this,fewer calves would have to be raised for replacement. It is estimated that the total saving from the use of such cows would amount to half a billion dollars per year.
Because of the probable increase in demand for dairy products it is not likely that we shall need to reduce the total number of dairy cows. It seems well within the range of possibility to so improve our dairy herds that same number of cows we now have will furnish enough products to meet the demand population increases from 200 million people. This suit in a saving of more than lion dollars.

ALL MECHANISM ON TOP where it belongs!
THERE are many reasons why all the mechanism of the General Electric Refrigerator is placed on top of the cabinet. Here are 3 vital reasons:
1. Refrigerating mechanisms develop heat in the process of cooling the interior of the refrigerator. This heat escapes and rises. Therefore, General Electric has placed therefrigerating mechanism on top so that the escaping heat travels away from the cabinet.
2. Placing all the mechanism on top of the cabinet achieves maximum food storage space within the cabinet.
3. With the mechanism on top, the inside of the cabinet is free from obstructions and easier to keep clean.
There are now more than 300,000 users and not one has ever spent a dollar for repairs. Visit our display rooms and see the new all-steel models.

Water Matters Before Meeting
Important Subject Discussed at Recent Session In Riverside
Orange county may not continue as a part of the Tri-Counties Committee which has included San Bernardino, Riverside and this county, because of the recent campaign here for flood water hands. An interim meeting was held at Riverside at which these matters were thoroughly discussed.
The Orange county district, now in existence, will continue to co-operate with the other counties in problems connected with the conservation, utilization and stabilization of the flow of the waters of the Santa Ana river. The question of the riparian rights of Orange county also came in for discussion.
The meeting was the second conference of the boards of supervisors, members of the advisory councils and special organization committee of the three counties, and was called by the president of the Water Conservation Association, Francis Cuttle, president of the Riverside Water Company, coming on the heels of the recent water bond election in Orange county to determine what steps should be taken in formation of a water district. The outgrowth of the meeting was the appointment of new committee for the determination as to how districts should be formed for the two upper counties with Orange county definitely out of that part of the program.
The position of Orange county with reference to the organization of a new district was stated by John C. Mitchell, member of the board of supervisors, and H. H. Hale, president of the Anahela Union Water company. "Orange county prefers to handle her own work along the line of food control and water conservation." Mitchell told the leaders present. "We believe that although the program presented at the recent election was defeated that a plan will work out that will enable us to make progress along this line without a tie-up in a tri-county district."
The Orange county supervisor also called to LOCAL BREVITIES
F. A. Yungbluth, George W. Reid and N. H. White appeared before the board of supervisors Tuesday and asked that the annual appropriation of $3,500 made by the supervisors to the California Valencia Orange Show, be increased. No action was taken by the board, but the question will be considered.
Charley McAuley and wife came down from Vallejo the first of the week on a visit to the home folks. Charley is one of the government's electricians employed in the navy yard, and is now enjoying his annual vacation.
Miss Sophie Rimpau entertained at a delightfully informal luncheon at her home on Tuesday: The afternoon was devoted to cards and conversation. Covers were laid for eight.
Mrs. Win. Dolan, assisted by Mrs. F. A. Yungbluth, entertained about twenty friends at an all-day picnic at the Dolan cottage at Balboa, on Wednesday.
Mrs. Newton Tharp of San Francisco formerly Miss Laura Hanna of this hemus during the past week. Mr. and visited with Mr. and Mrs. Dean Polcity, and Harry Hanna of San Marcos Mrs. Polhemus and family returned last week from their cottage at Balboa Island, where they have spent the past month.

The position of Orange county with reference to the organization of a new district was stated by John C. Mitchell, member of the board of supervisors, and H. H. Hale, president of the Anaheim Union Water company. "Orange county prefers to handle her own work along the line of food control and water conservation." Mitchell told the press present. "We believe that although the program presented at the recent election was defeated that a plan will work out that will enable us to make progress along this line without a tie-up in a tri-county district." The Orange county supervisor also called to the attention of the others at the meeting the fact that there was much water coming into Orange county of which the two counties could not possibly avail themselves.
State Senator Ralph E. Swing of San Bernardino addressed the meeting, declaring that conditions were rapidly becoming serious, that some immediate work must be done, and injecting into the discussion the legal status of Orange county as to its riparian rights and the possibility that it had the legal rights to take steps to prevent taking water above their line. He asserted that there was no course open but for the two upper counties to take immediate steps to spread the waters of the Santa Ana river, thus giving in repleasing the underground basins in their boundaries ahead of the Orange county project. This should be done to establish the legal right so to do. He made a plea for an understanding and working agreement for the three counties whereby the water could be legally and amicably undertaken in such manner as to preclude the possibility of court action that might ensue otherwise. Senator Swing also said there was a possibility that the state government might become an interested party in the conservation of the state water supply that steps had already been taken along the line of state aid for projects of this nature, and that a legislative committee, and a committee appointed by the governor for this purpose were studying and investigating what might be done along this line.
H. H. Hale declared that the other counties should form their district, but that they should not count on Orange county being a member of it, although it would of course co-operate.
"Our recent campaign brought forth some wonderful people, some wonderful water users and some wonderful engineers," he said, "who want to take our places. It developed marvelous engineers of the pick and shovel gang." Here he was interrupted by a questioner who asked if he referred to Finkle, but he stated that he would mention no names, although this man had recently declared the earthquake would have passed through the site of the dam proposed in Orange county. "The water companies in Orange county own the water that comes from the Santa Ana river," he continued. "And if you form districts up here you will have to deal with the water companies. Orthopaedic Work Certainly Pays
Records of the increase in the number of crippled children who have grasped and continued the educational facilities offered them at the Orthopaedic Hospital School for Crippled Children in Los Angeles make interesting reading, and prove conclusively that the physically handicapped child is just as eager for an opportunity to grow mentally as his more physically normal brother.
The Los Angeles board of education has always co-operated with this institution in providing teachers to conduct classes at the bedside for those that must remain in the wards, among more active patients who could gather into the little school room and even for high school work. In 1925 the first official graduation exercises were held in Orange September 23.

It developed marvelous engineers of the pick and shovel gang.—"Here he was interrupted by a questioner who asked if he referred to Finkle, but he stated that he would mention no names, although this man had recently declared the earthquake would have passed through the site of the dam proposed in Orange county. "The water companies in Orange county own the water that comes from the Santa Ana river," he continued. "And if you form districts up here you will have to deal with the water companies. Orange county only wants the part that it is entitled to and a plan will be worked out in Orange county in all probability. It seems that the people can only be educated by being hurt. That will come."
The men attending were urged to take the long look into the future and plan accordingly, so that there would be co-operation all along the line in making the most of the water situation and developing it to the fullest by J. A. Knapp, member of the Orange county citizens' advisory committee. "We must all stick together to meet the increasing demands for more water in the future," he asserted.
Continuance of the co-operation of Orange county in the present plan of spreading the waters of the river in its upper reaches was pledged by Supervisor Mitchell.
The meeting closed with the appointment of committees to proceed with the organization of water districts for the upper counties.
Orange county men at the meeting were George Jeffrey and John C. Mitchell, supervisors, J. A. Knapp, W. C. Jerome and H. H. Hale.
A. L. Sonderegger of Los Angeles consulting engineer for Riverside county, and F. C. Finkle, consulting engineer of Los Angeles, also were present. Finkle, it will be remembered, was consulting engineer for the Water Users Association.
An absent minded professor at Columbia University went away on his summer vacation, after forgetting to give the students their final exams. Any small boy will tell you that here is an ideal teacher.
The Los Angeles board of education has always co-operated with this institution in providing teachers to conduct classes at the bedside for those that remain in the wards, among the more active patients who could gather into the little school room and even for high school work. In 1925 the first official graduation exercises were held in honor of nine boys and girls who received diplomas at the hands of Mrs Margaret Sullivan Bonadinan. These exercises started a new epoch in education work for the many cripples of Southern California. The following year the graduation class had increased to ten, and more attention was being focused upon the splendid records these children, some of them lying for months in bed, were producing. In 1927 the class had again increased, this time to thirteen, and embraced its first school graduate. Ambitions were growing and many boys and girls who had never entertained an idea to continue with their high school courses, decided to have a try at it, so the increase in graduates was twenty-six in 1928 and thirty-three in 1929.
Up to a few months ago the center of all educational activity for the physically handicapped child was the Orthopaedic Hospital School, where classes were held in the wards and various buildings on the grounds of the institution. Only lack of pace and proper equipment prevented its continuance there, but the demand was so great that the Los Angeles board of education has assigned a portion of the Cambria Elementary and Jefferson High school to this work until such time as the new right wing of the Orthopaedic Hospital School can be built and provide adequate facilities.
Of course we don't know anything about the new premier of England, but it's our guess that a man with a Scotch name like MacDonald would be in favor of an economy program.
Arizona Indians At the County Fair
Chief Black Hawk and His Tribe Will Give Exhibition
Real, sure-enough Indians and plan-ty of them, Indians with war-bonets and tonnahawks, fresh from the wide open spaces of Arizona are bringing their women, their papooses and ponies with them, all under the leadership of Chief Black Hawk, will be at the Orange County Fair August 28 to September 2.
The chief has informed the County Fair Board that he has secured a selected group of Arizona Indians and that the village life of the tribe will be carried on just as at home.
However, home life is going to be just about the least part of the attractions Black Hawk and his people will offer. The Indian chieftain is a show man of no mean ability, and he proposes to put on an Indian exhibition that will prove one of the principal gate attractions at the fair.
The report of the committee on midway entertainments was to the effect that they are endeavoring to tone up the quality of the various mid-way entertainment features for this year. While the committee recognizes the fact that these carnival companies usually carry their combined shows as one aggregation, a decided effort is being made to see that novel and attractive offerings are furnished the public.
Associated Chambers Meeting
The July meeting of the Associated Chambers of Commerce is to be held next Tuesday evening, the 30th, at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, promises to be a great affair, with all that the president, "Gov." Loudon and the Harbor C. of C. have worked out in the way of entertainment. The event of the evening will be the presence of Congressman Phil D. Swing, but this is by no means the evening's only feature. Before the one dollar dinner at the club, and again after it, J. P. Pioneer Enjoys Birthday
Alex Wright celebrated his eighty-third birthday at Balboa several days ago, and went fishing on his son's steam launch, "The Vampire," and was successful in landing a fine catch of 275 pounds of fish. He was the honor guest at a birthday dinner, at which his family and other guests were present. A most agreeable time was enjoyed by all. Mr. Wright has lived here since the early 70s. He owns a splendid orange ranch on Orangethorpe avenue, and is one of the prosperous orchardists of that section.
Mr. Wright spends much of the summer at his cottage at Balboa and takes keen delight in landing fish several miles off the coast. He is probably the most successful fisherman at the beach and his record birthday catch will doubtless hold good for a long time, or until he breaks it himself.
State Division Busy Planting Trout Fry
The fish planting program of the Division of Fish and Game is well under way and the fish cars are running on a night and day schedule hauling trout fry to replenish the streams in various parts of the state. With the aid of sportsmen's organizations and under the supervision of deputies of the patrol department, the fry is being planted in waters where it has been allotted by W. H. Shebley, head of the department of fish culture, who carefully examines all requests for fish, and allows the species and number suitable for that particular water.
Mr. Shebley has announced that 40,000 grayling are being planted in one of the lakes of Yosemite National Park as an experiment to determine whether or not thi fish will thrive in California waters. Previous tests have been unsuccessful. Shebley explains, but he is not only trying them again in Yosemite but will make further experiments a the Mt. Shasta hatchery.
