Patterson Buried At Fairhaven
Victim of Canyon Murder Is Finally Laid to Rest
Burial Sunday of Joseph L. Patterson, for slaying when Philip Goodwin, self-styled American Catholic priest, is serving a life term in San Quentin penitentiary, marked the final chapter in one of the most remarkable pieces of criminal detection and conviction recorded, dating back to the discovery in March, 1926, of Patterson's body, partly burned, hidden in the brush of Santa Ana canyon.
Since that time, through the trial of Goodwin and subsequent appeals and new trials, the body has been held under the order of the county superior court by J. E. Seale, undertaker, pending final decision of the case.
Rev. Franklin H. Mick, pastor of the Orange Christian church, officiated at the service, which were conducted in Fairhaven cemetery. The casket was draped in an American flag. Patterson having served during the World War, and was a member of the Charleston, Mo., post of the American Legion. A floral piece from the Masonic Lodge at Charleston, of which he was also a member, covered the head of the casket.
Relatives and friends from Arizona, Northern California, Los Angeles, Lynwood and Santa Ana attended the services. Music was provided by the choir of the Orange Christian church. Patterson was a bond broker in Los Angeles at the time of his death.
Goodwin and an alleged accomplice, were found by officers to have been in Patterson's company prior to the murder and were believed to have taken a trip with him, during which he was murdered. In an effort to dispose of evidence of the crime the body was apparently catched with gasoline in a remote spot in Santa Ana canyon and on fire. It was found several

With a large crop of small-sized fruit and keen competition from our esteemed contemporary, Florida, exchange growers may sometimes wonder how the consumer is accepting their fruit and how retailers are merchandising it.
Many hundred of letters from consumers and the retail trade are reelled every year in the advertising department and two that came in reel indicate that progress is being made steadily, with both trade and housewife in the promotion of California oranges and small sizes.
A housewife in Doylestown, Pa., cheers the heart of the naval grower with the following:
"allow me to state that I am now sold on navel oranges absolutely. I have made the discovery that there is more household use for the California orange than the Florida. I give my husband orange juice every morning, but always used Florida oranges as they have more juice, but have just discovered that I can add water to the California orange juice and still have a better flavor than the Florida. Then too, the outer skin can be grated for a cake, adds color to a dish of prunes, fine for flavoring gelatine and is delicious candied and in numerous other ways."
In common with many other California features, this lady has discovered that our oranges, also, are an all-use product.
From a thousand miles or more west of Doylestown comes a letter from Edward W. Bartig, operating two grocery stores on the public square in the small city of Stevens Point, Wis. While the prices quoted by Mr. Bartig may not show much profit to the grower, the point brought out in his letter, which follows, is that successful merchandising of very small oranges is not an art confined exclusively to large cities:
"After reading of so many of the merchants that sell oranges in great quantities throughout the country, I
U. S. C. Completes Coaching Staff
Completion of football coaching staff assignments for the Trojan squad of next season was announced today by Bill Hunter, director of athletics at the University of Southern California. Assigned to assist Head Coach Howard Jones with the Southern California varsity are Gordon Campbell, Cliff Herd, Justin M. "Sam" Barry and Hunter.
Campbell is a former three-year foot ball star of Southern California, having played in the backfield on the Trojan varsities of 1921, 22, and 23. Since his graduation, he has been a member of the S. C. coaching body. Herd, a former Cornell player, has been with the S. C. coaching staff continuously with the exception of a season when he was in Europe, since 1919, when he directed the Trojan fresh.
Barry starts his first year with the Southern California coaching staff next September, coming from the University of Iowa where he has been head basketball coach and assistant football mentor for the past seven years.
Hunter, an all-state fullback in Ohio when he played for Oberlin from 1912 to 1914, is the oldest man on the football coaching staff in point of service as he will be starting his eleventh year with the varsity in the 1920 season. He came to Southern California's squad in 1919 as assistant to Coach Elmer Henderson and has been handling varsity material ever since, specializing in the development of backfield men. He has been director of athletics at S. C. since 1925.
Campbell, Herd and Barry will do considerable scouting during the coming season and consequently beside
David Rollins Hits The Heights After Two Years in Films
David Rollins, who made his debut in motion pictures less than two years ago, just after he finished high school, wins new laurels for himself in the William Fox Movietone Follies of 1829, the million dollar screen musical revue.
Rollins, with Sue Carol, is co-featured in "That You, Baby," a jazz song number written especially for the Fox Movietone Follies by Con Connery, Sidney D. Mitchell and Archie Gottlieb, famous song writers. Rollins, making his debut now as a singer, reveals a pleasing barytone that presages his appearance in future Fox Movietone musical productions.
Rollins' first big role was the lead in "The High School Hero."
The "Fox Movietone Follies of 1923" the first great screen musical review, will be shown at the Fox California theatre for three days, starting Monday next.
working with the varsity men will spend much of their time with the Spartans, the men who drill the varsity in the plays of their opponents.

Issue Rules For Campers' Guidance
State Official Pleads With Outing Parties To Be Careful
Ethics of the pioneer who was judged for his woodsmanship and conduct afield far more by his company manners were revived as Fred G. Stevenson, director of the State Department of Natural Resources, announced a new code for vacationing California abroad in their heritage of field and forest.
Defining the purpose of law not to impose a series of "Thou Shalt Not" but to clarify the rights of the individual in relation to the many, the state's conservation chief declared the state own its magnificent forest areas to the consideration which merits yesterday gave to the rights of the millions of today.
"If future generations are to enjoy the same privileges, it can only continue continued recognition of these rights," he said.
"Our forest laws are merely more specific definitions of the old Roman principle that no use of property shall be made that will damage another's rights or interest.
"If forests burn, streams dry up or game is destroyed through the selfish net of one, all the people of the state must suffer, the offending individual along with the rest."
Reducing his amplified code of outing manners to decalogue form, Steve-not announced his Ten Commandments
of the Forest as follows:
1. Leave no Camp Fire Burning, Stir fire coals while making them with water. Turn soil cracks and drench both sides. Wet to stand around the fire. Water is unavailable, stir in dirt and read is down until packed tight over and around the fire. Be sure the last park is dead.
2. Throw no Burning Material Away, break matches in two before throwing them down.
3. Burn on Grass or Brush Without a Permit from a Fire Warden The state law makes a closed season from May 15 to October 31, during which burning permits are required; but several counties have ordinances requiring burning permits the year round.
4.Build no Camp Fire Within a National Forest Without a Permit from a Forest Ranger. The state law does not require a permit to build a camp fire
