Orange County Milk Given First Rank
The highest milk rating given to any county department in California during the last year has been accorded to milk produced in Orange county as a result of a surprise milk scoring test and survey just completed by Dr. R. P. Gingerich, market milk specialist, bureau of dairy control, state department of agriculture.
A rating of 96.4 per cent perfect was given by the state representative and represents an improvement of 1.1 per cent over the last survey made last October, according to Dr. Gingerich.
The Orange county milk inspection service is under the supervision of Dr. K H. Sutherland, county health officer, and J. B. Bichan, county dairy inspector. According to Dr Gingerich, much credit is due these officials for developing and maintaining the uniformly high quality milk supply being distributed in Orange county.
Surprise contests and surveys are held at irregular intervals, dates of which are not announced beforehand. The scores are an average of the analysis of all samples of milk taken from the various dairies since the previous contest, and the score given the milk of each dairy is an accurate method of determining the quality of milk produced. The scores are computed on the following basis:
Bacterial county: 35 per cent; butterfat: 15 per cent; holds not fat: 15 per cent; flavor and odor: 15 per cent; sediment: 10 per cent; bottle and cap: 5 per cent; acidity: 5 per cent.
This makes a total of 180 per cent as perfect. Each of the above items is distinct from the others and thus the milk is scored from all angles.
"Quality of graded milk in California today is so uniformly high that there is probably a tendency on the part of many consumers to accept the results as a matter of fact," said the milk expert. "However, quality never is a matter of chance. The uniformly high height of 155 feet above stream bed at which point it would be 500 feet thick on the base. It would extend straight across the stream bed between the two low projecting points at the dam site. THE PRADO RESERVOIR
The Lower Prado reservoir would have its dam in the Santa Ana Canyon one-half mile below the intake of the Santa Ana Valley Irrigation company's canal. This is the site farthest downstream in the canyon on which it is practicable to construct a dam. It is the one selected by Dr. B. K. Sogne consulting geologist, from the two possible sites in the canyon as best favorable for the construction of a safe dam, and the one recommended by the Engineering Consulting Board for safety, least cost*. Last interference with properties and least delay in occupation. The reservoir would have a capacity of 180,000 acre feet and, when full, would flood nine miles of river channel entirely within the walls of the canyon that separates the Orange county plain from the agricultural lands and places of use of water in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

The California Gladiolus Show
Half Million Blooms To Be Displayed at Biltmore Hotel June 13 and 14
Over 500,000 blooms are being grown in California for display at the fifth annual California Gladiolus Show, to be held at the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel on June 13th and 14th. This year's show promises to be far greater than the one last year, which was rated as the flim of its kind in the entire country.
Mr. Clifford Moore, manager of the show, has an responsible for the beautiful arrangement and layout of the previous exhibits, has with his committee planned the 1928 event to surpass anything that here heretofore been attempted.
According to the advance ticket sales and inquiries about the show, a conservative estimate would be that 10,000 persons will attend this year's event. The entire ballroom space has been engaged by the commercial growers who are giving their exhibits months of thought in order to eclipse all former displays in beauty of design.
The management has also obtained the services of the best known authorities on Gladiolus to do the judging, which will give the public the advantage of getting first-hand information on the better varieties. The opinions of such men as J. D. Long of the J. D. Long Seed company, Boulder, Colorado, Calibur of Berkeley, Calif., W. H. Kingsley of Hayward, Calif., C. E. Hudyshel of La Verne, Calif., and Louis G. Rowe of Sea Brook, New Hampshire are well worth consideration.
The public will also be invited this year to do some judging. Each person entering the show will be given the opportunity to select which in his estimation is the most beautiful Gladiolus on display. The spike obtaining the greatest number of votes will be...
AN AGE OF FAITH
It is a long time since the steamer Vestris went to bottom of the Virginia capes, carrying 100 people down with her; but new facts about the tragedy are still coming out.
At the present inquiry in London it is disclosed that the steamer was considerably overloaded when it cleared from New York, and competent witnesses have testified that this was a contributory cause to her sinking.
The citizen who embarked on a steamship has not, naturally, any way on earth of telling whether the vessel is loaded properly or equipped properly. Things of the sea are a closed book to most landmen. To make a sea voyage is to perform an act of faith—faith that unknown men have been conscientious and thorough in the performance of their duties.
Indeed, this is becoming increasingly true of everything we do. Never before was the average man so much under the necessity of taking it for granted that his fellow men would be upright and capable. The machine age might well be called the age of faith.
You do not have to make a sea voyage to demonstrate this. Every day of your life you stake your life on faith that the men you meet will do their parts properly.
For instance: you drive along a river in your automobile at a speed of our nation of the uncontrolled surface water, washing away our soil and carrying it to the sea. It has been determined that 1,500,000,000 tons of soil matter is washed from our farms and pasture lands and carried to the sea every year.
This soil, thus stolen from us by erosion, contains 126,000,000 pounds of plant food, which is twenty-one times more plant food than is removed from the soil by crops. You must remember that when plant food is removed from the soil by agricultural crops it can be restored by fertilizer and soil legumes, but when the soil is washed away it cannot be restored by man and the land from which it is washed is forever lost to agriculture.
"It has been conservatively estimated that the value of the soil our country loses each year by erosion amounts to $2,000,000,000, and the farmers of the nation suffer a direct primary loss of two hundred million a year by reason of the destructive depredations of this master criminal—erosion.
"In 1879, when erosion had not inflicted such enormous damage on the agricultural soil of the nation, the farmers spent only $28,000,000 for fertilizer. In 1919, as a result of erosion, they were compelled to spend three hundred and twenty-six millions."
For instance: you drive along a street in your automobile at a speed of 30 miles an hour. Coming toward you on the left, is a stream of autos going the other direction. The cars whizz past you at a speed equal to your own, missing you by a scant two or three feet.
You are putting up your life on the faith that none of these drivers is drunk or incompetent or near-sighted. If one of those cars should swerve slightly out of line you would have a bad smashup that would probably kill you—but you simply take it for granted that all of these unknown drivers.
You could find a similar instance in men as good as yourself, almost every hour of your daily routine. The whole complicated fabric of modern life is held together by nothing in the world but faith.
This is why the bungler—the careless, witness incompetent—is able to do more harm today than ever before in history.
In the old days it usually took a certain amount of malice to bring about a disaster. Today a moment's inattention on the part of the most well-meaning of men can have fearful consequences. Incompetence may yet be rated the most serious crime on our calendar.
Soil Erosion is National Menace
One of the greatest national wastes is the waste of our land itself due to soil erosion which has done a great deal to depreciate the value of farm and in many parts of the United States. Congressman James P. Bushman has written in the current issue of the National Republic an interest-

Anyone may enter one or more spikes in this competition. The older originations have just as good a chance to win as the new creations with the public and not the commission of Gladiolus, so to the judging.
The licents of Southern California promote a magnificent display of their varied uses of the Gladiolus, which will be an education in itself.
Of cours we are going to have the able assistance of our color clerk, Geo. Warren, who will definitely settle all disputes as to the color and classification of each and every Glad. in the show.
The different communities have been invited to enter baskets representing the finest Glads grown in their particular location. This occupation will be worth going a long way to see. Any one interested in flowers must not miss this show. It is to be an event in floral history in Los Angeles that will never be forgotten.
A navy flier in Washington went 40,000 feet in the air and found it was seventy degrees below zero. This is different from the experience of the average fellow who finds that the more he goes up in the air the hotter he gets under the collar.

FLYING a Wright motored, stock Lockheed cabin monoplane, using Richfield Aviation Gasoline and Richlube Motor Oil, Herbert J. Fahy, chief test pilot of the Lockheed Aircraft Company, set a new solo endurance record without refueling—remaining in the air 36 hours, 56 minutes, 36 seconds.
Fahy took off from Metropolitan Airport at 4:43:05 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, and landed at 5:39:41 p.m. Wednesday—exceeding the record of Martin Jensen by 1 hour and 23 minutes.
Once again Richfield has played an impressive part in an aerial achievement—just as it did in the flight of the Question Mark army plane, in Captain Wilkins' hop over the North Pole, in numerous record breaking transcontinental flights and endurance records.
Use Richfield in your own car for the same reason it is selected by leading pilots and flyers—power, speed, unfailing dependability. And Richlube pure Pennsylvania Motor Oil—it means longer life to your motor.
