Spirited Contest Between Two Rivals
U. S. C. and Stanford to Battle On Track at Coliseum Saturday
Renewing their long-standing track feud, University of Southern California and Stanford teams will hold the spotlight in the California intercollegiate track and field championships to be held Saturday at the Los Angeles Coliseum. University of California and U. C. L. A. will also be entered in the meet with good teams, but the feature of the affair will be the continuation of the Trojans' and Cards' struggle for supremacy as their squads have proved in previous meets this season to be two of the country's leading squads.
With Captain Charley Borah in poor condition with a pulled muscle and possibly out of the meet entirely, the Trojans on paper do not figure to prove much of a threat to Stanford. There is a possibility, however, that the Trojan leader may be able to run a 220 Saturday, and the Southern Californians are holding the hope that their season's dark horse flash, Milton Maurer, can win the 100.
Should the unexpected happen in sprint victories for Troy, the S. C. team would be back in the running despite the present gloomy outlook.
While Stanford through the superiority of its weight men, has a big edge in the field events, keen competition looms in every race on the track. If Borah is out of the meet, Hector Dyer, the Stanford sprinting star, will find plenty of competition in the 100 and 220 from Maurer of the Trojans, Spenser Disby of California and Johnny Hill of U. C. L. A.
The quarter-mile looks like a classic with Johnny Morrison of Stanford and Vic Williams of Southern California fighting to hit the tape first. Williams holds one victory over Morrison, but the latter has run the 440 in faster time than the Trojan and looks now like a slight favorite. This race also has such additional stars as Gerald Pearson of Southern California, Syler hit a slump in th elast few weeks and is hardly given a chance to finish better than third.
The high hurdles look like a clinch for Captain Ross Nichols of Stanford, with Al Pogolotti of California giving Ward Edmonds a battle for second. The low hurdles, however, look like one of the day's big feature events, as Jim Payne o fthe Trojans is getting back into condition and will be out to run this race in close to 23 seconds. Payne is not underrating Edmonds, his Stanford tival, however, and the latter is given more than a fair chance to win no matter how fast the Trojan flash steps off the distance. Ernie Payne of S. C. and Pogolotti of California are other fast men in this race, who are possible first place winners.
Coach Dean Cromwell of the Southern Californians has prepared a dope sheet in which he concedes Stanford first with 85, with the Trojans finishing second with 44, California third with 30 and U. C. L. A. fourth with six California and U. C. L. A., however, may cut into Stanford's points much more than Cromwell has figured, while his own men should perform better than his dope sheet predicts, making the meet a real struggle for first between the Cards and Trojans.
California Leads In Cars Per Capita
California still has the most automobiles in proportion to population, with one car for every two and seven-eighths persons, according to the 1929 "Facts and Figures of the Automobile Industry" now being released by the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce. Arizona led the states in increase of motor vehicles with a gain of 16 per cent, this report reaching the Automobile Club of Southern California further shows.
The phenomenal gain in use of motor transportation abroad is a highlight of the new publication. Motor vehicle registration outside of the United States now totals 7,285,000, which compares with 7,585,000 registered in the United States on December 31, 1919.
Other facts presented in this compilation show that automotive products roads built in 1928, according to the record. With a total registration of 24,493,124 motor vehicles, it is shown that pleasure cars comprise 21,379,125 of this total and motor truck registrations in the United States total 3,113,999.
Einstein, who knows so much about space, might devote a little of his time to finding some of it for parking.
Christian Science Church
The subject of the lesson-sermon is "Soul and Body." Sunday in all Christian Science churches, branches of the Mother Church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass.
Among the scriptural selections of the lesson-sermon cited in the Christian Science Quarterly, are the following verses from Psalm xxiii: "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want He restoreth my soul; He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake."
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord, forever."
A correlative passage from the Christian Science text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" presents these words of Mary Baker Eddy: "The science of being reveals man as perfect, even as the Father is perfect, because the soul, or mind, of the spiritual man is God, the divine principle of all being, and because this real man is governed by soul instead of sense, by the law of spirit, not by the so-called laws of matter."

Alex McKinnon of Stanford, Ed Gloege and Bryce Schurr of S.C. and Dave Chase of California from a quartet of half-milers that make up a high class field. The Stanford man is favored to win unless he is previously forced to put everything he has into running the mile. In the mile McKinnon will have Carter of California as his hardest man to beat.
