The most gigantic suspension show tent in entertainment history is now being made for the ninth annual California Valencia Orange show to be held at Anaheim May 23 to June 2, according to details disclosed by officials from that city. It will have an area of 90,000 square feet with a capacity of 35,000 people in addition to the many exhibits. The tent is to be 750 feet long.
Through a secret chemical process the canvas will be water-proof on one side and fireproof on the other, the first of its kind in history.
When run through a machine, the top side of the canvas is imprinted with a sky-blue pattern, while the walls will give an appearance of Spanish adobe. The structure will be uphold by steel frames, no poles on the interior to mar the vision of spectators. In the opinion of George W. Reid, general manager of the show, the exposition next month will establish precedents for all expositions of its kind.
Veterans to Give May Day Dance
Trying to Raise $500 for Veterans' Relief Fund
Editor Gazette:—The Orange County Council of the American Legion in order to maintain a service officer, who has intimate contact with the Veterans' Bureau, and the County Aid Commissioner, and who can secure for veterans and their families all the rights to which they are entitled, finds it necessary to raise about $500 which will be necessary in addition to a like amount which Santa Ana has contributed through her Community Chest. In order to obviate the necessity of conducting a drive in each community, we are perfecting plans for a grand May Day dance and entertainment, to be held at the famous and spacious Rendezvous ballroom. Balboa, on the night of May 1st. This date has just recognized as a dam, according to engineers. A caretaker would be on duty at the dam, probably continuously, although Engineer Paul Bailey commented that he wouldn't be afraid to leave such a dam alone without inspection for ten years at a time.
Selection of the lower site, in preference to the site at Prado, was decided upon for several reasons, the chief one being the presence of water bearing lands at the upper site, where about 30,000 acre-feet, or the bulk of the water that comes into Orange county, rises. Erection of a dam there would not only interfere with the rising water, but would complicate water rights to such an extent that officials of the district shied away from the probable expense of such an entanglement.
The cost estimate includes not only construction of the dam, but purchase of the land and the cost of relocating the Santa Fe railroad line through the canyon.
Proposed construction of the dam was explained in detail. The main body of the da mwill be built of sand, offering the advantage of drainage.

This date has just been chosen at a meeting of the Veterans' Welfare Committee held at the Orange Legion hall. A 12-piece orchestra, yet to be chosen from a field of seven competitors, will furnish wonderful music. "Happy" Wintz, of El Segundo, nationally known fun-maker of the Legion, will act as master of ceremonies assuring all a good time.
We would appreciate your co-operation in making a success of this maiden effort of the Veterans' Welfare Committee to raise funds for its important work. Please give us an early advance notice so that the public may reserve the date. We hope to furnish more details after the meeting of the Legion County Council, at the Brea Scout cabin, April 12th, at which meeting Warwick Camp, United Spanish War Veterans, will be the host.

Finish Plans for Flood Control
(Continued from Page 1)
The 1927 flood, he said, would not have wet the upper half of the structure.

Proposed construction of the dam was explained in detail. The main body of the da mwill be built of sand, offering the advantage of drainage, that will present sliding from saturation. The sand is present at the site and can be easily handled. The dam, with its 1,000-foot base, will be spread widely upon an 80-foot stratum of river sand that will provide a splendid foundation, said the engineers. The upstream surface will have two lines of interlocking steel piling driven down to bedrock, with the sand between impregnated with cement. Connecting with the steel pilling will be a concrete facing along the upstream of the dam. In front of that will be a layer rolled material fill, with another lay of rolled gravel fill over that. The steel pilling will be anchored at each bank, with a reinforced concrete diaphragm.
Bailey explained that the plan of steel piling had been substituted for a concrete wall down to bedrock, at the suggestion of the consulting board. This, he said, not only provided a great saving in expense, but greater safety as the steel piling would be more flexible than concrete and would be immune from earthquake shock.
Under the surface upstream from the dam would be a perforated pipe line, to receive the underflow, carry it around the ends of the dam, and place it underground below. That would eliminate any objection to the dam cutting off the underflow of the river.
Tunnels would be provided throthe dam for the water supply belonging to the two large water companies of the county. Siphon type spillwa would be adopted for the dam, with

The new $1 bill has the picture of George Washington on it and the $1,000 bill bears that of Chase. It's a good bet Washington will get the most publicity out of it.

capacity of 150,000 second-feet, instead of 200,000 as originally planned.
Attention was called to an additional safety factor, available at the lower site, consisting of a smaller auxiliary reservoir of 50,000 acre-feet capacity, at a slightly lower level than the main dam. In the event of an unprecedented flood, over-taking the capacity of the dam, this auxiliary dam would wash out, leaving the main dam unthreatened. The auxiliary dam can be built, because of existing conditions, at no additional cost. It was declared.
The work contemplated in Brea and Carbon canyons, said Bailey, would take care of the flood run-off that now runs into Fullerton from the Puente hills. The object is to divert this to the Santa Ana river through the conduits and following floods, the reservoir gates would be opened to permit a gradual release of the water into the conduits.
On San Juan creek, the object is to "iron out" the normal floods and provide a smooth, even supply to the agricultural lands and the pumping plants of the newly developed beac hareas.

While the San Juan dam would be of semi rock-fill type, due to the presence of many boulders in that vicinity, it will also have a sprinkled, rolled fill along its upper surface, and will be connected with bedrock by a concrete wall along the upstream face. Carbon and Brea canyon dams would be of similar construction, except they would be entirely rolled and sprinkled fills, instead of rock-fill.
Santiago creek plans call for 25,000 acre-feet storage in two reservoirs, one of which may be jointly constructed with the Irvine and private water company interests, which will provide 25,000 acre-feet storage of their own. No attempt at joint operation will be made, however, until the bond issues are voted separately.
While the engineering report has not yet been entirely completed and therefore cannot be formally filed immediately, officials were already discussing future steps in the conservation program. No action can be taken towards calling an election on a bond issue until the engineering report is accepted by the district, but Chairman Willard Smith today expressed the hope that an election can be held before the middle of June.
Actual construction, if bonds were voted by that time, probably would be started this fall. It was said.

HIS NEW process Richfield Gasoline, to which Ethyl fluid is been added, is as different from other "Ethyls" as they are from ordinary gasolines. It is actually, measurably, 40% better!
The Ethyl Corporation, to insure a truly premium Ethyl gasoline, has wisely insisted upon a very high standard of gasoline by all of its licensees.
This standard, plus the necessary 2 cubic centimeters of Ethyl compound per gallon, insures an efficient anti-knock fuel for all motors up to 5 to 1 compression ratio. The same amount of Ethyl added to the new super Richfield, however, produces an anti-knock high compression gasoline efficient up to 7.5 to 1 compression—actually 40% better!
Ethyl is only the cream in your coffee. The actual difference in gasolines is in the fuel itself. That is why Richfield-Ethyl is so far superior to any other gasoline sold.
It is definitely, provably, 40% finer than the finest standard demanded by the Ethyl Corporation itself!
