Nurmi To Run At Coliseum Saturday Phantom Finn Will Attempt to Break the Mile Record On the Track Paavo Nurmi, the sensational "Phantom Finn," will try to set a world's record in the mile for all time when he runs in the Coliseum at Los Angeles Saturday. The greatest runner the world has ever known, who holds more world's records than any six athletes, dead or living, will attempt to score the triumphal climax of his career on the Coliseum track, which he has declared to be the fastest in the world. Nurmi, who will be making his first appearance here in three years, will have one of the greatest milers in America. Nick Carter, at the start of the race, Carter, heavy California favorite, who has beaten Edwin Wide, the noted Swedish distance runner, is regarded as the most dangerous opponent that Nurmil has ever encountered. Nurmi will attempt to run the mile in 4.09 for a new world's record. Carter finished fresh as a daly in 4:16 when he defeated Wide. Experts will not be surprised to see the present world's record of 4:10 2-5 shattered by both celebrities. The famous Diving Finn who for many years has maintained a rigid diet of black bread and dried fish, will fly here from Chicago in a special airplane so equipped that he will be able to train while enroute. Scores of Olympic champions will greet the noted athlete and will stage an athletic carnival in the Coliseum Saturday afternoon before the big event. The Olympic carnival will begin at 2:15. General admission is $1.00, the profits of the meet to go toward sending Southern California athletes East for pre-Olympic tryouts. Seats are now on sale at B. H. Dyas Co. stores in Los Angeles and Hollywood, and at the Coliseum box office on Saturday. CARELESSNESS THE CAUSE A report just issued by the transportation division of the state railroad No doubt an effort will be made in the extra session to Hooverize farm relief legislation. Mr. Hoover is President. Naturally the republican majority in Congress will prefer to go along with the chief executive. Respect for Mr. Hoover's knowledge of economics will go far in this respect. The Coolidge idea on farm relief failed as did McNark-Haugenism. It is recalled that an effort was made by the administration to effect a compromise, that the Middle West said it was the equalization fee or nothing, and that the farmers got just that—nothing. The hopeful view is that neither the Coolidge idea of farm relief nor that of the original McNary-Haugen bill will be offered. AMERICA'S NEW SEA SENSE Something more than mere irritation over the Franco-British naval agreement, negotiated following the collapse of the Geneva Conference, or resentment over the proddings of the pacifists at home must be cited as the underlying cause of the great turnover in Congress, whereby the fifteen-cruiser program went through both branches by overwhelming votes. In 1922, after the Washington Conference, the House vote on the navy showed 25 "little-navy" states of the 48. The recent vote in the Senate on the cruiser bill showed 34 pro-navy states, nine divided and only five opposed; four of them voted for their radicalism and the fifth, Utah, perhaps not truly represented by the semi-professional anti-navalism of Senator King. In all, except the five anti-naval states, the truth was recognized that the present building program does not give us parity in big cruisers; that it adds our comparative and not to our competitive strength. The Navy League of the United States analyzing the remarkable change in opinion as demonstrated by the recent voting, correctly states, we believe the fundamental cause back of this shift. This is the realization that, with a foreign trade which keeps one-tenth of our people employed and with productive capacity outranking that of any other country on earth and forcing for itself an outlet on the sea, we must have a navy adequate to protect the more than 150,000 miles of water routes over our goods and those we buy abroad must travel. As Mahan said: "The navy should include no excess." GLASS HIVE FOR Ordinarily what takes the darkened recesses of mains a mystery, but will hide known as the Milk hive, nearly every staggered bee experts of the U.S. Agriculture state. The wits of the queen can be the habits of the tiny bee exact manner in which tend them. NOTICE OF ASSIGNMENT SECTION TWO WATER LOCATION OF PRINT OF BUSINESS ANALYSIS Notice Is Hereby Glenn meeting of the stockholding Two Water Company, held on the 4th 1929, an assessment of Fargo per share was lae CARELESSNESS THE CAUSE A report just issued by the transportation division of the state railroad commission throws an interesting light on grade crossing automobile accidents. Briefly, it presents fairly conclusive evidence that most of these accidents are due to the carelessness of motorists. The total number of grade crossing accidents involving automobiles in 1928 was less by a considerable margin than in 1927, although motor vehicle registration showed an increase of 119,623. During 1928, 181 persons were killed and 1008 injured at street railway and railway crossings. That most of these casualties could have been avoided is apparent from this detailed comment of the report: "Approximately 27 per cent of the grade crossing accidents during the last three years resulted from vehicles running into standing or moving trains. The increase of accidents during the last two / years, occurring on double track crossings is apparently due to the growing tendency of impatient drivers to proceed over crossings as soon as the first train has cleared, without knowing whether or not a train is approaching on the second track, with the result that the vehicle is struck by a second train from the opposite direction. Suggestions are made for the installation of a special signal announcing the approach of a second train at double track crossings, for the purpose of reducing these accidents. A large percentage of the accidents occurred at grade crossings protected by wig-wags and also by human flagmen. More than 75 per cent of the grade crossings in the state are now protected only by crossing signs, and that the crossings protected by human flagmen or wig-wag signals are the more important ones, and carry a considerable volume of vehicular traffic." While it is obvious that all railway crossings should be protected by flagmen or signal devices, the fact remains that no amount of protection can avail against the carelessness of motorists who run into trains standing at crossings, who drive upon tracks in the face of wig-wag signals and who cross double tracks without assuring themselves that the way is clear from both directions. Our contention always has been that about 30 per cent of all automobile accidents—grade crossing and all other—are preventable by the use of ordinary caution and common sense. The railway commission's report seems largely to vindicate this contention. The real traffic problem, so far as human safety is concerned, will begin at 2:15. General admission is $1.00, the profits of the meet to go toward sending Southern California athletes East for pre-Olympic tryouts. Seats are now on sale at B. H. Dyas Co. stores in Los Angeles and Hollywood, and at the Coliseum box office on Saturday. Craig To Introduce Salary Measure Increases For All County Officials Provided For In Bill Willard Smith of Orange, chairman of the Orange county board of supervisors, reported that Assemblyman Edward Craig of Brea would introduce in the assembly in the near future a bill providing increased salaries for county officials here. Smith conferred with Craig in Sacramento, while he and the remainder of the board of supervisors were attending the annual convention of the County Supervisors' Association March 13 to 16. According to Smith the bill is in committee and is expected to be reported out this week. In addition to salary increases, the bill provides for appointment of four new deputies. The measure has been given the sanction of the board of supervisors. A master calendar clerk to handle increased court business in accordance with installation of the master calendar system in superior court at the instigation of the state judicial council, is provided for in the bill, at a salary of $2700 yearly. A new deputy in the auditor's office, at $1800 a year; a new deputy in the assessor's office, at $2100 a year; a new deputy in the district attorney's office, at $3000 a year, are provided for. Salary increases for heads of departments will become effective at the beginning of their new terms of office if they are re-opted, upon passage of the bill. Deputies and other county employees named in the measure will receive increases on August 1, if the bill passes. FARM RELIEF With an extra session of Congress to undertake farm relief legislation, leaders are planning the groundwork for a measure that will meet the demand. Senator McNary and Representative Haugen, the extra session may be offered another McNary-Haugen bill. That is to say, the measure may be thus named. But that is as far as the nomenclature will go if present indications of legislative sentiment have any true value. As a matter of fact, McNary-Haugenism has passed out of the picture. The republican convention platform adopted in Kansas City fearlessly opposed the equalization fee principle. It was commonly accepted that the McNary-Haugen bill without the equalization fee would not be the McNary-Haugen bill at all. Then in the campaign Herbert Hoover, now president, expressed himself on the issue of farm relief, so it became known that, like Mr. Coolidge, he was opposed to the equalization fee. Consequently the senate and house committees on agriculture face the responsibility of developing something else. To be consistent, the extra session, controlled by the republican party, must offer something in line with the Hoover view on farm relief. The equalization fee principle, meritorious or not, did not win in the November election. So it has reached the end of its political influence as certainly as anything ever did. The egg-laying habits of the queen can be observed, and the habits of the tiny larvae and the exact manner in which the nurse bees tend them. The regurgitation of nectar and the process of ripening the thin slurp into thick honey can be watched. The bees soon become accustomed to the glass hive and carry on as normally as in a darkened hive. The hive is easily carried around and is a fine help for purposes of nature study. Two omelet secrets: Moderate, even cooking temperature; serving piping hot. Allow as many tablespoons of milk as you have eggs, and salt to taste. Use a large heavy skillet, and cook in melted, but not browned, butter. Move the pan about during cooking so that the edges as well as the center will be evenly cooked. Brown the top of the omelet in the oven or directly under a gas flame before turning it out. For a flat omelet, beat the eggs slightly, add the milk and salt and cook at moderate heat to an even golden brown top and bottom. Roll in the pan and turn out on a hot platter. For a fluffy omelet, beat yolks and whites separately; add milk to yolks, fold in whites carefully, and pour into a pan large enough to permit the mixture to be about one inch thick. When set, crease in the middle, fold, and turn out carefully. Serve at once. The only way we could get our internationalists to agree on something purely American would be to mark it "Made in Europe."
