Waynick Gives Data On Measurements
Anaheim Expert Makes Public Pertinent Facts
In response to the interest among growers with reference to the possible relation of fruit measurement data to the picking schedule for valencia oranges, Dr. D. D. Waynick, soil and fertilizer expert of Anaheim, has outlined the conclusions which he has made with the information available to date.
1. We are dealing with a different type of growth for outside and inside fruits insofar as the time relation is concerned. I believe that outside and inside fruits should always be classified differently in picking. As an average on all soil types, outside fruits have not grown after May 1, while inside fruits have shown an average increase of .08 over a four year period.
2. Soil type is a very important factor in relation to the time of growth.
3. Outside fruits on sandy soil types (wilting points 3-8 per cent) have not increased in size after May 1 and have shown an actual decrease after July 1. Inside fruits in this classification have not shown this decrease.
4. Outside fruits on intermediate soil types (wilting points 8-12 per cent) have shown an average increase of .06 after July 1. On the average the increase in size in this soil type is equal to the decrease in sizes in the sandy soil types.
5. We have no evidence of either an increase or decrease in size of outside fruits on clay or adobe soil types (wilting points 12-18 per cent) after May 1. Inside fruits continue to grow at the average rate.
6. Average increases in diameter of fruits, for the last four years, has been .12" from March 1 to July 1 for outside and .20" for inside fruits. July 1 is used as an average of the picking season for valencia oranges.
7. I believe that we will find that average valencia sizes in the northern Orange County Exchange will represent the exchange average closely over a period of years. This average will probably be within the limits of error.
Cities, counties and states lose their boundaries so far as educational restrictions are concerned, with the establishment of the radio correspondence division, KEJK, of the University of Southern California, which began broadcasting college lectures this week.
Introducing academic atmosphere into every home with a radio, the Trojan Air College supplements the lessons-by-mall service of S. C., and offers mors now are current that either Baumgartner or Stephenson may return as manager of the Register under the Copley banner.
The Copley syndicate, which established itself in Southern California less than two years ago, now owns a number of papers in this part of the state.
Copley, former Illinois congressman and public utility operator, sold his power interests there to the Insull interests of Chicago. In Southern California he allied himself with F. W. Kellogg, whose chain of newspapers near Los Angeles provided the nucleus for the present Copley chain. Kellogg: a few years ago attempted unsuccessfully to extend his chain of papers in correspondentunity to through conference tions.

Santa Ana Register Sold to Syndicate
Announcement of the sale of the Santa Ana Register by J. Frank Burke, its proprietor, to the Ira Copley Syndicate, although not yet formally made, is expected within a few days.
Through a San Francisco advertising agency connected with the affair, definite news that the sale of the newspaper has been made was received.
Burke purchased the paper a year and a half ago from J. P. Baumgartner, T. E. Stephenson and associates.

The most we can find out about this reparations conference from the newspapers is that the allies claim the Germans are rolling in wealth and the Germans claim that if they are called on to pay any more reparations they will have to pawn the watch on the Rhine.
