County May Have New Courthouse
Supervisors Realize That Better Building Is Needed
Definite provision for a new courthouse, or for a new unit in the present county building group, will be made in the next annual budget. Although no final amount has been considered in this respect by the board of supervisors it is believed that such a project would necessitate the expenditure of at least $225,000 and possibly a larger sum.
That the board of supervisors are planning to give the matter of a new courthouse a preferred place in the provisions for next year's expenditures and that they also are preparing to clear the way for launching Orange county's flood control and water conservation program during the coming year was evidenced Tuesday. The supervisors indicated that they are contemplating only such other outlays as they regard as absolutely necessary.
This expression was evidenced when the supervisors were offered an opportunity to purchase the fair grounds between Santa Ana and Anaheim. John Ragdn of Villa Park, S. W. Miller of Placentia, and Norman M. Blaney of Santa Ana, pointing out that the fair board was ready to turn over the property, put the matter before the supervisors. They said the offer had been made at the same price for which the 33 and a fraction acres had been purchased several years ago. Twenty-two acres were offered at $1,200 an acre and 17 and a fraction acres at $1,900 an acre. The total price asked was $57,-800. They pointed out that the fair board holds an option on the 17 acres, which will expire on February 23. The other parcel is controlled by a holding company of 23 men, they said.

They said the offer had been made at the same price for which the 39 and a fraction acres had been purchased several years ago. They pointed out that the fair board holds an option on the 17 acres, which will expire in February 23. The other parcel is controlled by a holding company of 23 men, they said.
After considering the offer the supervisors informed the group that the county is facing the probability of building a new courthouse in the near future, as well as the flood control project and road construction projects which undoubtedly must be taken care of. The board did not feel that at this time it was in a position to consider the offer inasmuch as these other matters must be taken care of first.
It has been pointed out in the past that actual purchase of the grounds, while not an item of great expense, probably would be followed by the necessity of expanding several hundred thousand dollars for construction of fair buildings if the county owned the grounds.
Evidence that the courthouse situation must be taken care of without delay has been seen recently in the fact that several offices have been rearranged in order to accommodate efficiently the growing business that is handled. It has been found necessary to secure a new location for the Farm Bureau in other quarters. It is agreed, however, that this arrangement will not be able to take care of the situation for an extended length of time and that it has been put into effect because some immediate relief was needed.
The flood control project is rapidly approaching a point where it is expected that Paul Bailey, flood control engineer, will place before the supervisors the results of his investigations during more than a year to study on Orange county streams. This project alone may call for ran expenditure of $10,000,000. It is expected that the board of supervisors will receive Bailey's report in the not far distant future.
Basketball Team Finishes Season
Finishing a hectic season, the University of Southern California basketball team will wind up its schedule in the Pacific Coast Conference Saturday night, February 23, in a third court tangle with U.C.L.A. in the Olympic Auditorium in that city. The Trojans have already clinched their series with the Bruins by taking the first two games by scores of 28-23 and 39-31, but there will be no let-up in their drive against the U.C.L.A. five, as the Southern Californians are anxious to engage with neatness and thoroughness a two-cut-of-three defeat from the Bruins last year.
Southern California's customary starting combination, consisting of promote quality.
There is keen rivalry among competing districts in this respect, for whenever one of them comes to be recognized as having the best quality, it becomes difficult for the others to sell to advantage.
Quality is the result of a combination of factors. The correct variety, good seed, favorable climate, richness of soil, proper fertilizers, the right kind of irrigation, timeland expedited harvesting and proper care in grading and preparation for shipment are all important.
Quality is perhaps the greatest influence toward greater consumption and expanding markets. It attracts customers and holds them. It makes for repeat orders and for free advertisement.
AT SEA IN A BALLOON
The Christian Science Monitor relates that three Germans who ascended in a balloon near Leipzig, found soon after they took the air that they were unable to work the apparatus for releasing the gas and bringing themselves to earth. They were as helpless as Teddy B and Teddy G., whose balloon adventures were broadcast for the pleasure of the youngsters some twenty years ago.
All night the three Germans drifted through the air, over Holland and out over the North Sea. Surely then they must have thought their untimely end was inevitable. There appeared to be nothing to stop their progress unless they encountered a towering iceberg on which they surely would have frozen to death. But the gale carried them toward the snow-covered Calrgnor.

Southern California's customary starting combination, consisting ofaron Nibley and Henry Cano, forwards; Jesse Mortensen, center, and captain Lloyd Thomas and John Lehers, guards, will take the floor for the Trojan fans Saturday, according to Coach Leo Calland. These were the men who started against the Bruins in the two Jordan victories earlier in the season and Callan dwants to give them chance to make it three straight over their Los Angeles rivals.
Montsenegro, the big boy from Arizona who in his sophomore year last season made the All-Coast team as a forward appear to have found his old shooting eye and his old finesse in floor work after getting off to only a mediocre start in early conference games, and Trojan fans expect him to play his best game of the season in the final Bruin encounter. It was his clever floor work and timely passing to his temmates in the last U.C. L. A. game that contributed largely to the downfall of the Southern California rivals and as he is improving right along, he should be faster than ever Saturday night.
Preceding the varsity game, the Southern California and U.C. L. A. freshman teams will play off the third game for the "city fresh championship." The Bruin cubs won the first game, 38-31, but the Trojanes took the second, 36-31, to tie up the count.
QUALITY IN VEGETABLES
The highest aim of vegetable growers should be to produce products of superior quality. The extra fancy commodities are the ones which bring the premium, and the premium is sometimes the biggest part of the profits.
The present tendency is toward better and better quality. The trade and the consumers are growing more critical and more discriminating in their demands. The progressive growers are meeting this situation, too, by taking advantage of every measure which will to work the apparatus for releasing the gas and bringing themselves to earth. They were as helpless as Teddy B and Teddy G., whose balloon adventures were broadcast for the pleasure of the youngsters some twenty years ago.

But the gale carried them toward the snow-covered Cairngorm. Mountains of Scotland which struck their balloon to earth. It was a harrowing experience. Probably no home-sick son or daughter of Scotland holds those mountains as dear as do the three Germans.

TELLS THE TRUTH
Senator Jim Reed, nearing the end of his service in the upper house, put his finger on one of the evils of public life when he castigated those members of congress who "vote dry and think wet." Nothing is so typical of the hypocrisy of politics as the spectacle of scores of men sitting in legislative capacities who enact laws governing the conduct of others, and who at the same time persistently violate these

New Equipment For Sub-Station
Southern California Edison Co. Improving the Service at Garden Grove
The installation of complete automatic control equipment in the Garden Grove sub-station of the Southern California Edison company, assuring uninterrupted service under all conditions, is now under way. W. L. Diemling, district manager of the Edison company in Santa Ana, announced that 5,402 would be spent to complete the improvement. The station is located at Taft and Sherman avenues. Garden Grove.
"The Garden Grove sub-station, forming the western point of a triangle that also includes Santa Ana and Orange, will be the first of the extensive transmission and distribution system of the Edison company to be equipped with this full automatic control." Mr. Diemling said.
"The additional electrical equipment which is now being installed, will be of the most modern type available and was designed to assure continuous electrical service that would be free from the threat of interruptions."
The new equipment, according to the announcement of Mr. Diemling, will, when necessary, automatically change the distribution supply from one transmission line to another without a moment of interruption in service.
This work, according to Mr. Diemling.
Christian Science Church
The congregation of branches of the Mother Church, the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass., will hear a lesson-sermon on "Mind" Sunday, which includes various citations from the Bible and passages from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
Among the selections which will be read are these scriptural verses from Matthew xvi: "And when they were come to the multitude, there came to him a certain man, kneeling down to him, and saying, Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is a lunatic and sore cured; for oftimes he faileth into the fire, and oft into the water." And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him, and the child was cured from that very hour. And this statement by Mrs. Eddy: "The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good is the only mind, and that the suppositional opposite of infinite mind, called devil or evil, is not mind, is not truth, but error, without intelligence or reality."
Society folks held a bridge party recently in the air 5,000 feet above Miami. Douglass there were a number of high scores.
Some Legislative Oddities
The Oklahoma legislature has taken time off from impeaching Governor Johnson to pass a law making it a misdemeanor to whisper slander about people. Hereafter they who "report or scatter false rumors of a slanderous nature or of harmful nature" will be liable to a fine of $100 to $500, or from Now, we think that idle and malicious 30 to 120 days in jail. Gossipers are deserving of some punishment, but what state is rich enough to build jails numerous enough to accommodate all the people who might be convicted under such a law? A good many of us might become familiar with the inside of prison walls were such a law rigidly enforced. More characters have been assassinated in the dark than were killed in the World War in an equal length of time. An abuse so common as the whispering of scandal and slander can never be reached by a legislative statute. The effort to curb it may be commendable, but we predict it will be wholly futile.
There are only two ways in which scandal can be overcome. The first is never to pay any serious attention to it and the second to rise above it. We can do so a candidate for office did when a scandal was circulated about him. He said, "I know more mean things about myself than they do."
