Want Canyon Road In State System
Southern Counties Organize to Put It Through Legislature
That the campaign for inclusion of the Santa Ana canyon road in the state highway system will have support in the next legislature not only from strong forces in Orange county, but also from influential sources in the seven southern counties was announced by Senator-elect N. T. Edwards, of Orange, who has been working for months in the interest of the project.
As a result of a conference Friday in Los Angeles, attended by county officials from all over the Southland, by members of the Automobile Club of Southern California and members of the California Development association, the counties practically have united on a highway program which they will urge the coming legislature to adopt, Edwards said. The Santa Ana canyon road is a definite part of this program.
The campaign thus will go before the legislature with the universal backing of the strongest leaders in the southern part of the state. Edwards has made the canyon road project his major highway activity in recent months and has concentrated his efforts on gaining support for the proposition. He represents Orange county on the committee of the California Development association and will carry his campaign to the state senate when it convenes in January. His scheme calls for making the road from Newport Beach to San Bernardino part of the secondary state highway system.
He pointed out that, although it is by no means certain at present that the legislature will adopt the program, the fact that the Southland is united in its aims will give the campaign added force in the legislature.
Friday's session at the Alexandria hotel in Los Angeles was attended by William Schumacher, chairman of the Orange county board of supervisors, and by Oscar Gunther, of Orange, who is on the same committee with Edwards.
For the Southland as a whole the group pledged itself to gain for this section of the state a fair share of state rated with colored lights the lawn Christmas tree is a thing of beauty.
The Nikko fir is also valuable as a commercial crop, and Mr. Pack asserts that it can be spread over millions of our "slacker areas." It can be grown in from six to twelve years after planting and makes an ideal Christmas tree.
While there is an apparently unending supply of Christmas trees there is a danger that some of our Christmas greens may disappear among them the holly, and which is gathered each year in unrestricted fashion. The American tree association advocates the cultivation of holly on abandoned and run-down fields.
Aside from holiday sentiment, the Christmas tree will perform an important function if it adds to the interest of the public in tree generally. There is nothing much more ennobling and inspiring than the study and cultivation of trees. This is a practice which is on the increase in America and deservedly so. A stately tree is one of the finest creations of the Almighty, and no man or woman can view one in actual study without being bettered thereby.
CHRISTIAN SCIENCE CHURCH
In the Lesson-Sermon on "God," Sunday in all Churches of Christ, Scientist, branches of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, one of the references cited in the Christian Science Quarterly is the following, from Matthew xv: "And great multitudes came unto him, having with them those that were lame, blind, dumb, malmed, and many others, and cast them down at Jesus' feet; and he healed them; insomuch that the multitude wondered, when they saw the dumb to speak, the maimed to be whole, the lame to walk, and the blind to see; and they glorified the God of Israel."
The Lesson-Sermon also includes, among correlative passages from the Christian Science textbook, this statement by Mary Baker Eddy: "God will heal the slack through man, whenever man in governed by God. Truth casts out error now as sudely as it did nineteen centuries ago" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 485).

Friday's session at the Alexandria hotel in Los Angeles was attended by William Schumacher, chairman of the Orange county board of supervisors, and by Oscar Gunther, of Orange, who is on the same committee with Edwards.
For the Southland as a whole the group pledged itself to gain for this section of the state a fair share of state highway funds. It was pointed out that Southern California, paying 60 per cent of the road taxes, and having more than one-half of the major traffic, is allowed approximately 40 per cent of the road funds by the Breed highway zill. It was undertoo dithat an ultimate change in this legislation was demanded.
According to Edwards the group endorsed a resolution declaring that they will support legislation that "has an ultimate purpose in view of establishing an approximate equal distribution of the state secondary highway mileage between the two sections of the state."
Bert M. Meek, state director of public works; and C. O. Carleton, attorney for the same body, attended the session. Meek asked that the group resolve that a scientific study of the question of naming additions to the secondary highway system be made over a period of two years before the matter is brought to the legislature.
CHRISTMAS TREES
All of us are of course familiar with the Christmas tree. It may interest us to know that the Christmas tree has been added to the crops which the farmer may raise to increase his revenue. For this reason there is no fear that the supply of Christmas trees will ever be exhausted. For this we have the authority of no less a tree expert than Charles Lathrop Pack, president of the American Tree association, an organization which is accomplishing a great deal toward interesting the general public in trees and their culture. Mr. Pack stated recently:
"The Christmas tree crop is being taken up by farmers more and more every year. So great has become the demand that the growing of them is now a real business. About 10,000,000 are used every year at a cost of $5,-000,000. Here is a neat by-product for the farmer. The living Christmas tree in the town square as a year-round reminder of Christmas has been inaugurated in many places and in others the community tree is a yearly event."
That the Christmas tree industry is now a big one can be gathered by an inspection of the groceries and marketees of all our cities and towns during the pre-holiday season through which we have just passed. It has been suggested that each family grow a Christmas tree of its own, not in competition with the marketable trees which are placed in the homes of the coun-
