How to Build Up Healthy Dairy Herds
State Department of Agriculture Gives Advice on Subject
How to build a clean, new TB-free dairy herd from an infected one, through segregation and particular care of the calves from good producing cows, is the subject of frequent inquiries from dairymen since tuberculosis in cattle has been commanding more widespread attention. Staff members of the animal industry and dairy divisions of the state department of agriculture have recently made several addresses upon this topic.
The tuberculin test is the most accurate guide for recognition of tuberculosis in cows. But, explain the authorities of the state department of agriculture, such a large percentage of cows in some districts have some infection with the disease that the dairyman is frequently faced with a big problem as to their disposition. If all infected cows were slaughtered, the dairyman would in many instances find himself almost out of business. And so, not being able to provide by replacement a herd entirely disease-free he struggles on depending on the safeguard of pasteurization and expending extra energy to overcome the conditions which reduce or limit his profits.
Because of this problem—in the absence of means for compensating the cattle owner for any part of his loss when cattle are slaughtered—other systems of elimination and control are used. One of these, calculated to produce a new and disease-free herd, is known as the Bang system.
The Bank system originated in Denmark. But it has not met with much success in this country, except under modification. Under the Bank system, all animals are tetewd es?jino all animals are tested with the tuberculin and those reactors to the test which are otherwise clinically of healthy appearance are isolated from the herd to be used for breeding purposes and the two herds are maintained in separate quarters, with separate attendants and with extreme precautions ex-
used. One of these, calculated to produce a new and disease-free herd, is known as the Bang system.
The Bank system originated in Denmark. But it has not met with much success in this country, except under modification. Under the Bank system, all animals are teteesed esjinoo all animals are tested with the tuberculin and those reactors to the test which are otherwise clinically of healthy appearance are isolated from the herd to be used for breeding purposes and the two herds are maintained in separate quarters, with separate attendants and with extreme precautions exercised to avoid contamination of the healthy from the reactors.
Because of the difficulties involved in carrying out the regular Bang method, modifications have been devised to make the raising of a sound, healthy herd more practicable. Under one plan of modification, according to officials of the state department of agriculture, no attempt is made to maintain the cows in separate herds, but all calves are separated from their mothers after the first 24 hours to avoid becoming infected. The quarters of the calf herd, both barns and corrals must, of course, be thoroughly clean and disinfected; for the germs of infection persist in the litter or dirt for a long time. Unless the new quarters are first made absolutely clean and free from the germs, the calves will become infected just as surely as if not separated.
After being put into their new quarters, the calves are fed by hand with milk that has been boiled or carefully pasteurized or with powdered milk; and of course their quarters are constantly kept scrupulously clean.
Absolutely no contact must ever be permitted between the calf herd and the infected herd. Where possible it is better to have separate attendants for each heard; but where the same persons must handle both herds the utmost effort must be made to avoid carrying infection to the new herd. Special care must be taken that infection is not carried on the shoes, for the manure of reacting animals may be heavily laden with germs. Changing shoes is recommended if it is necessary for an attendant to enter both quarters.
After weaning, or when the calves are about three months old, they are tuberculin tested. If any reactors are found, they are immediately taken out of the herd. The stems of amil animals in the new herd are repeated about every six months, to insure the continued maintenance of disease-freedom.
As the younger stock in the clean herds comes into production, the reactors in the old herd are disposed of until only non-reacting, sound, healthy animals are left.
The difficulties of rigid adherence to the requirements of separate quarters; the great care necessary to avoid transfer of contagion to the new herd; the need for unfailing boiling or perfect pasteurization of milk fed to calves where powdered milk is not used; and the absolute lack of contact through fences, in barns or otherwise between old and the new herds, make either the bank method or permissible modifica-
Auto Registration Increase in County
Registration of new cars and trucks in November indicates that the automotive industry is "coming back," following a slump, for the increase for the month was 55 per cent over November, 1927, according to statistics compiled by the Motor Registration News at Oakland.
At the same time the resume reveals that a 38 per cent gain was made in Orange county in the same month, the history being the registration of 464 new vehicles from this county, as compared with 336 in November of the previous year. Other counties in the state made similar gains.
Pointing out that 18,341 cars and trucks were registered for the month as against 11,767 for a year ago, the News says:
"Northern California is credited with the larger gain of the two sections, that of 66 per cent, while Southern California registers a 48 per cent increase. Northern California's totals amounted to 7703 for the month just closed and 4652 for November, 1927. Southern California reached a total of 170,538 for November of this year, and had a total of 7115 for November a year ago."
The passenger car industry when viewed alone shows up better than the state average when commercial cars were included, for the increase in this feeding and weighing. These sheep trained well on the mixture and were able to use about one-third raisins in their feed. They won first in the junior division and also brought good prices in the sale ring at Los Angeles.
A third group of boys under the direction of L. J. Banks, agricultural instructor in charge of hog work in high school, fitted a car of thirty head of pure-bred Poland China hogs. These hogs started as fifty-pound pigs and at wintime averaged 235 pounds each. The yused one-fourth raisins in their ration and made gains of more than two pounds a day. The hogs were used by judging classes in the high school judging department for training in livestock judging and some ten boys had a share of ownership in the lot. They won first in the Los Angeles Junior Show and sold well above the market. The boys of this high school own about forty pure-bred Poland China brood sows and those are kept at their home places. It was from litters of pigs farrowed from these sows that hogs were chosen to be put in the feeding test and make up the carload for the stock show. During this fall, in showing their breeding herd at San Joaquin County Fair, California State Fair, Kern County Fair, Tulare County Fair and Fresno County Fair these same boys, under the direction of Mr. Banks, received over $1600 in premium money.
During the coming month of May this club is going to publish a little booklet summing up its results of feeding raisins to beef cattle, dairy cattle, hogs, sheep and poultry.

As the younger stock in the clean herds comes into production, the reactors in the old herd are disposed of until only non-reacting, sound, healthy animals are left.
The difficulties of rigid adherence to the requirements of separate quarters; the great care necessary to avoid transfer of contagion to the new herd; the need for unfailing boiling or perfect pasteurization of milk fed to calves where powdered milk is not used; and the absolute lack of contact through fences, in barns or otherwise between old and the new herds, make either the Bank method or permissible modifications extremely exacting. In many cases it is considered impractical. By neglect of a single detail in the scrupulous care of feeding or handling, all the work of months, or perhaps two or three years, may be suddenly lost. Theoretically the methods are good; in practice, the chances of success are limited by many conditions and obstacles which cannot be foreseen.
If the creation of a new healthy herd by the raising of calves is undertaken, the dairyman or breeder should make use of all the reliable assistance and counsel available.
He should obtain advice and guidance from his local veterinarian, who can give personal attention and supervision to the project from its beginning. His suggestions will be needed in such an undertaking. In addition, the various bulletins dealing with the subject should be carefully studied. An article pertaining to calf raising appeared in the 8th Annual Report of the California Department of Agriculture December, 19277. The University of California has also issued Circular No. 21, for the information of dairymen desiring to establish clean herds, by this procedure. Other valuable data are also available through publications.
If necessary to supplement the data at hand, information may be obtained from the State Division of Animal Industry, Sacramento, or the Division of Veterinary Science, University of California.

MINING NEWS
Many old properties in the vicinity of Placerville which have been idle for thirty or forty years are now being opened up by outside capital. For instance, the Martin mine, one mile north of Placerville, is being worked by J. H. Christensen. A 400-foot tunnel is being pushed on 125 feet to where the gray channel is thought-to lie. Three men are employed. The Van Hooker mine at Poverty Point recently made a 20-ton sample run of ore taken from

The Indian Hill hydraulic mine near Camptonville has been taken over by Frank W. Camp and preparations are now being made form the season's run. This is one of the famous old mines, but there is considerable virgin ground yet untouched.
The San Francisco Mining Exchange has ruled that when a mining company listed on the exchange levies an assessment on its outstanding stock it must render a statement showing that the money thus raised was actually used in developing the mine. If the statement is not satisfactory the stock will no longer be listed on the exchange.
A vein running two and a half feet wide and assaying $6.80 and $12 a ton in two assays has been opened up by Tom Bath on the Golden Eagle Claim at Newton, El dorado county. The find was made in the bottom of a shaft down only eleven feet.
