Weed Demon That Must Be Squelched
Dangerous Puncture Weed Causing Much Damage Here
Imagine a three-cornered seed about the size of a grain of field corn, the two opposing angles armed with stout needle-sharp spines, keen and tough as steel. This assemblage is the fighting unit of the puncture weed. In appearance, this demond among pestiferous seeds, with its keen spreading horns, looks not unlike a dried and polished skull of a pygmy Spanish bull. There are from three to five of these fearsome things united loosely in one bur when they are ready to be dropped from the parent plant, but they soon separate, each going forth on its own to do what damage it can.
They may plant themselves in the pathway of the unsuspecting barefoot kiddie; they may lurk in the alfalfa patch, and make Old Bossy bawl with grief by getting under her tongue; they may invade the sylvan precincts of the camp ground, and cause some plenicker, to leap with amazing suddenness and profane ejaculation into the erstwhile quiet air. But the puncture weed's best trick is to scatter its armed battalions along borders of the highways, to be picked up by auto tires. A few of these "stickers" can make an inner tube look pretty sick.
The puncture weed is a late arrival among the other left-handed blessings of our up-to-date civilization, but it is an enemy to be seriously reckoned with. Left to riot unrestrained in this genial clime, where it can carry on all the year round, it could make our land uncomfortable to about anyone unprovided with armor plate. Let us not run away with the idea that the puncture weed is a mere inconvenient nuisance, like sand-burs, nettles, Canada thistles or poison sumac.
In war, it is a safe and good maxim to learn all you can about your enemy before you begin fighting him. What is this puncture weed like? Where is it to be found, and how did it get there?
In seeing a puncture weed for the first time, one would never suspect its initiation. In fact, it poses no serious threat.
Walnut Costs Are Being Investigated
The 1928 walnut cost of production survey, which is being conducted by the Agricultural Extension Service, will show a lower per acre cost of cultivation over the figures for -527. These growers who are in the survey, according to the farm advisor, realized that less cultivation was possible with equal production per acre. As a result, materially less cultivation is being carried on, particularly in the thirty-eight groves now carrying on the study.
Last year a group of eleven groves that averaged 2454 pounds of nuts per acre showed a cost of $9.59 per acre for cultivation. On the other hand, cultivation of a group of eight groves which produced an average of only 1100.7 pounds per acre cost $15.89 per acre.
In the survey last year there was no correlation between the amount of cultivation and increased yield or improved quality of nuts. Quite the reverse seemed to be true. There seemed to be a relation between increased cultivation and lower and poorer water penetration which resulted in less moisture being available to the trees.
This year the survey has been enlarged, not in number of growers but in details covered. A comparison of amounts of irrigation water used during the past two seasons will be one of the features. Also, a comparison of groves growing on different types of soil will be attempted.
The survey will be completed by thirty-eight growers in Los Angeles and Orange counties, representing approximately eleven hundred acres, of which nearly nine hundred will be mature. The survey year ended November 30 and it is hoped the summaries will be available by February.

Orchard Heating Is Good Insurance
The series of orchard heating meetings which have just been concluded in Orange, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties were well attended by the citrus growers. Increased interest in orchard heating is apparent each year in the districts subject to low temperatures.
The subject of heating citrus trees to avoid frost damage involves many problems such as the recording of orchard temperatures with thermometers, types of heating equipment to use, kind of fuel and other phases of the subject outlined by Floyd Young of the U.S. Weather Bureau. Mr. Young stressed particularly the proper regulation of heaters to secure long life with the heating equipment and also to obtain a high efficiency from the fuel. The larger and more responsible oil companies are now selling a fuel oil especially prepared for orchard heating. This oil usually has less than five per cent paraffin, contains no water and has been found to be very satisfactory. Many brine heaters are being put out this year. A larger number per acre is required. Mr. Young also made the interesting comment that temperature drops in an orchard are most abrupt and greatest when the atmospheric and field conditions are dry.
Recent surveys on orchard heating have shown that about 25 per cent of the orchards in Los Angeles county are now equipped with heaters and 4% of the orchard area in Orange county. Orchard heating may be considered as an insurance policy. It reduces dangers from minimum temperatures.
Details of heater equipment, management and costs may be secured from the farm advisor's office in any of these counties.
Dairy Day Events
The program for the Dairy Day was received from W. M. Cory, assistant farm adviser. Beginning at 10:30 a.m., at the E.A.Wakham ranch, one and a quarter miles north of Ocean Avenue, Garden Grove, on Magnolia avenue, the day promises to be full of worthwhile topics for the Orange county dairyman.
Dr. E.M.Keef of the State Department of Agriculture, leads off with the subject, "What Should Be Done to Maintain a Tuberculosis-Free Herd?" Dr. L.M.Hurt, county veterarian, Los Angeles county, follows with, "Contagious Abortion and How to Combat It." At 11:30 a.m., Norman M.Blaney speaks on the "Accomplishments of the Farm Bureau." Just before adjourning for lunch the Dairy Department elects its directors for the ensuing year.
Lunch is being provided by the Dairy Department of the Orange County Farm Bureau, with the aid of the Excelsior Creamery Company and Raltit's Sanctuary Dairy. While no elaborate hospitalization will be available by February.

NOTICE IS HEREBY Monday, December 24 hour of ten o'clock, A at the South entrance County Courthouse, in Ana, County of Orange formia, the Abstract a company, a corporatior a certain deed of Mrs. Freda Sherman, Book 79, at page 310ords of Orange County was given to secure a for the sum of Twelve ($1200.00), due ninety with interest at seven num. payable at mature paid with the said deed of plance with a notice for sale of the
severe winters, which may not only have killed the growing plants, but perhaps, most of the seeds as well. But in our tolerant California climate, the puncture weed is an all-year-problem. When we humans disturb Nature's balances, we must usually pay the penalty.
Fortunately for us, the individual puncture weed, when growing, is a helpless thing, easy of attack and destruction. Its single root is easily cut off or pulled up, and when the unrooted plant is burned, that particular puncture weed is out of business for good. Another advantage in the fight is that the plant is easily seen and recognized. There is little danger of overlooking it or mistaking it for something else. Also, it seems to prefer roadsides or other bare, uncultivated spots, and does not spread out among other wild things much. This should make it easy to suppress, if we go about the job systematically and thoroughly.
Helping to get rid of it should be a good job for the boys and girls. And they are personally interested, too, as they will quickly find out when they come to get some of the wicked puncture weed seeds well attached to their bare feet. When puncture weeds begin to appear along some highway or street, the Boy Scouts and the Campfire Girls could do a very worthy stunt by turning out with hoes and baskets some Saturday morning and trying to outdo one another in destruction of the enemy. Every farmer and gardener and highway inspector, of course, should be on the look-out for the appearance of the pest in neighborhoods where it has not previously been seen. Puncture weed talks should be given in the schools, in every region where the enemy has appeared or is likely to appear.
It is only by such persistent and thorough methods as these (and they are already in practice) that the spread of this dangerous and costly pest can be checked.
Well the world continues to improve. The old-time drug store which, in some instances, sold bad liquor behind the prescription counter, has been succeeded by the modern drug store which sells good coffee in front of it.

Turn Down Many Applicants for Plates
The Division of Motor Vehicles announced that all requests received from now on for special numbers or low numbers on 1929 license plates will be disregarded.
These requests have become so numerous, it was stated, that it will be impossible to fill them without seriously disrupting the work of the division in the coming renewal season. The officials estimate that more than 25,000 such requests have been received, it being necessary to create a special department to handle them. With the approach of the renewal period, this department has been discontinued.
The officials explained there is little preference in numbers under the system adopted for 1929 in which both letters and numerals will be used. Plate No. 1, for example, no longer exists this having been changed to 1A1.
Frank G. Snook, chief of the division, said that while it would be possible to reserve a few of the lowest numbers, running from 1A1 to 1A-3000, it would be practically impossible to go into the plate files for other low combinations without throwing the files into chaos and hampering the work of the clerks.
"As a matter of fact there will be thousands of low numbers available under the new system that will remain in our regular files to be given out or mailed out to the motorists as we come to them," said Snook. "Everybody will either get a low number or a good-looking number that is easy to remember."
Hospital attendants stated that they did not believe Jimminez' wound would prove fatal.
