Volunteer Deputies Hold a Convention
Preservers of Fish and Game Meet in Los Angeles
Outstanding in the results obtained from a standpoint of a real understanding of conservation and protection of fish and game in California, the convention of volunteer deputies of the Division of Fish and Game held in Los Angeles on November 17th, ranks among the greatest pieces of work done by the fish and game organization for a long time.
The convention, unique in that it was the first gathering of its kind ever staged in the United States, brought together 73 of the volunteer protectors of fish and game who work in the California counties south of the Tehachapi.
Leading their men in the discussion of the various problems were Captains R. E. Jeffries, of the Los Angeles district; W. E. Pitts, of San Luis Obispo; Frank Dunn, of Santa Barbara county, and James Procter of Ventura.
The meeting was held in the assembly room of the Chamber of Commerce here, and was presided over by R. E. Jeffries, captain of the deputies in Los Angeles county. Captain of Patrol Walter R. Welch, who is the regularly assigned officer of the Division of Fish and Game in charge of the work of volunteer deputies, instructed the men as to their status as fish and game enforcement officers and as to the proper discharge of their duties as volunteer deputies of the Division of Fish and Game.
President I. Zellerbach, of the Fish and Game commission, and Eugene D. Bennett, executive officer of the Division, made serious addresses and impressed those present with the importance of real conservation and protection of the natural resources of the state. Federal Game Warden George Tonkin told of the co-operation between federal and state officers, while Assistant Chief of Patrol Charles Bauder, who is in charge of the southern district for the Division of Fish and Game, expressed his pleasure at being able to
Winning Floats Are To Be Exhibited
Pasadena Will Display Them After the Big Parade
By CNPA Service
Prize-winning floats in the 1929 Tournament of Roses parade will be exhibited in the plaza of the new Pasadena city hall throughout the afternoon and evening of New Year's Day. It was announced by Harlan W. Hall, secretary-manager of the Tournament association. The post-parade exhibit of selected floats was tried out last year and proved so popular that a decision was made to repeat it this year.
Due to the fact that almost a million visitors pack into Pasadena for the big New Year's Day fete, many persons catch only a fleeting glimpse of the gorgeous floats as they pass in the morning parade. Showing of the floats in the city hall plaza during the afternoon and evening will permit everybody to view closely and leisurely. The plaza is large enough to accommodate a score or more of floats and couneless thousands of spectators. It will be flood-lighted during the evening.
Streets over which the tournament parade passes will be decorated more invisibly this year than ever before. Plans for the decorations are in the hands of a joint committee representing the Tournament association and the Merchants' association. Approximately 15,000 colored electric light bulbs and about 700 flags, banners and pennants will be used in the street decorations. Electrorollers along the line of march will be wrapped with palm leaves. Several cash prizes are being offered to the individual merchants who provide the best decorations for their stores on New Year's Day.
Information booths again will be erected throughout the downtown section of Pasadena for the day. They will be manned by volunteers from the service clubs of the city, who will be prepared to provide information on a wide variety of subjects, including train, interurban and local street car schedules.

Parks to Open For Winter Use
Three of California's four national parks will be opened for winter use, according to announcement by the National Park Service. It is stated that deputies of the Division of Fish and Game.
President I. Zellerbach, of the Fish and Game commission, and Eugene D. Bennett, executive officer of the Division, made serious addresses and impressed those present with the importance of real conservation and protection of the natural resources of the state. Federal Game Warden George Tonkin told the co-operation between federal and state officers, while Assistant Chief of Patrol Charles Bauder, who is in charge of the southern district for the Division of Fish and Game, expressed his pleasure at being able to work with the volunteer forces, who devote their time to the work without compensation.
Following the convention, which was pronounced a distinct successby all those in attendance, a banquet was staged in the chamber of commerce rooms, Superior Judge George Wilber McDill of the Municipal Court of Los Angeles county acting as toastmaster, Fish and Game Commissioner Reginald F. Fernald, Executive Officer Bennett, Assistant Chief Bauder, Captain Welch, Lieutenant-Governor H. L. Carnahan and Volunteer Deputy R. M. Grose, of San Francisco, who represented the bay district at the meeting, spoke at the banquet along with many others who made brief addresses.
After the meeting, President Zellerbach declared that more real good had been accomplished and more sincere co-operation had been inspired by the meeting than any of those there would fully realize until the work of protection and conservation showed in definite results just what had been done. Others echoed his statements, and the meeting was pronounced a highly successful one.
On Friday, closely tied in with the convention of the convention of the volunteer deputies, a meeting of the Associated Sportsmen of California, the organization that fathered the movement for a volunteer force to aid the regular patrol in enforcing the fish and game laws, was held for the purpose of forming a regional district and the establishing a branch of the organization in Los Angeles. Those in attendance found the Southern California sportsmen seriously eager to join in any movement for the better protection of fish and game, and the backing up of the program of progress laid out by the Fish and Game Division.
Officers were named and the members of the association who journeyed to Los Angeles to aid in the meeting expressed themselves as highly optimistic regarding the constructive work that it is expected will be done by the Southern California branch of the organization.

In The Matter of the Estate of Catherine O'Leary, An Incompetent Person:
Notice is hereby given that under and pursuant to the law made and provided, the undersigned guardian of the Estate of Catherine O'Leary, an incompetent person, will sell at private sale to the highest and best bidder, subject to confirmation of said Superior Court on or after December 31st, 1928, at the office of Martin E. Parks to Open
For Winter Use
Three of California's four national parks will be opened for winter use, according to announcement by the National Park Service. It is stated that more than half of the big playgrounds of the people in the United States are now open during the colder months.
Ideal conditions for the enjoyment of winter sports are offered in Yosemite National Park and in Sequoia and General Grant National Parks. Skating, snowshoeing, skiing, tobagging and sleigh riding are among the diversions offered in Yosemite, and it is expected that the winter sports of the Olympiad to be held in Los Angeles in 1932 will be staged in this all-year 'round outdoor lovers' paradise.
This year the south rim of the Grand Canyon will be open during the winter. There are light snow flurries occasionally in the winter time in this region, but never enough to prevent muleback trips into the canyon depths where one may camp throughout the year.
In General Grant Park the fourth annual celebration of the nation's Christmas tree will be observed. This celebration drew more than a thousand visitors last year.
Zion National Park in Utah although in the past affording no living accommodations between October 15 and May 15, is open to those carrying their own camping equipment and supplies.
In additional to these parks, several of the southwestern national monuments also will be open to travel during the winter season.
Well the world continues to improve. The old-time drug store which, in some instances, sold 'bad liquor behind the prescription counter, has been succeeded by the modern drug store which sells good coffee in front of it.

Attorney for Guardian of Catherine O'Leary, an incompetent person, Suite 905 Central Building, Los Angeles, California.
