Another Record For RICHFIELD FLYING the Lockheed-Vega monoplane "Yankee Doodle," using Another Record For RICHFIELD FLYING the Lockheed-Vega monoplane "Yankee Doodle," using Richfield Aviation Gasoline, Captain C. B. D. Collyer, round the world record holder, established a new east to west transcontinental non-stop record—shattering the Army record that has stood since 1923. Captain Collyer, accompanied by Harry Tucker, owner of the plane, took off from Roosevelt Field, Long Island, at 4:17 p.m. Wednesday and landed at Mines Field, Los Angeles, at 2:08 p.m. Thursday—completing the third successful transcontinental flight in the history of aviation, after 24 hours and 51 minutes in the air. Collyer's feat follows a series of record-breaking flights made by Art Goebel in the same plane, including the spectacular flight from Los Angeles to New York last August in which he established the present Coast to Coast record of 18 hours and 58 minutes and the recent Los Angeles to Cincinnati non-stop flight. Richfield gasoline was used in all three of these flights—the same famous gasoline that captured four of the six major events in the National Air Derby, the fuel used by Captain Wilkins on his record-breaking dash over the North Pole—the fuel that has won more victories and world's records than all other gasolines combined. ANAHEIM GAZETTE New Schedule By S. C. Edison Co. Ranchers to Get Reduction During the Season of 1929 A new rate schedule applicable to agricultural consumers has been announced by the Southern California Edison company, to become effective for the agricultural season of 1929, according to the announcement today of W. L. Deimling, local district manager for the company. Agricultural power users will benefit by a saving in excess of $300,000 during the first year the new rates are operative. "This new schedule," said Mr. Deimling, "is a two-part type which the Edison company has worked out in conjunction with California Farm Bureau representatives. "An annual service charge based on the rated horsepower of the installation will apply in all cases. This charge will be collected during the six-months' period from May to October. The charge for energy will be made each month as power is used. "The new rate schedule provides for a geradual reduction in energy charges based on the use of the installation. In an instance where a fifty horsepower motor is in use, the rate per kilowatt hour for consumption per horsepower during the year would be 1.2 cents for the first 1000 kilowatt hours. The rate for the second 1000 kilowatt hours would be 9 cents and for all over 2000 kilowatt hours 8 cents." The following schedule gives the annual service charge per horsepower: Size of installation Annual Charge 2 to 4 horsepower $6.50 5 to 14 horsepower 5.50 15 to 49 horsepower 5.00 50 to 99 horsepower 4.50 100 horsepower and over 4.00 The energy charge in addition to the service charge for installations of the varying horsepower as established in the new schedule fixes a rate per kilowatt hour for consumption per horsepower per year as follows: First Second All over 1000 KWH 1000 KWH 2000 KWH 1.5c 1.2c 8c 1.4c 1.1c 8c such heavy traffic unusual precautions should be exercised by all drivers. The route is a test of real driving and the mechanical condition of the car—brakes especially. We often have occasion to be thankful for the good Buick four-wheel brakes. "It really is on the north side of the Ridge Route on the straightaway that the high speed is so often indulged in. Here we get the measure of the cars. None has yet got away from us. Say, I'd like to wager that Galbraith and I could take our Buick roadster and set a new transcontinental speed record." We will all have something to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day—if it's no more than the fact that the campaign is over. HANNALEI HILLS A Beautiful Subdivision Under Vista Water. The time of meeting is 1:30 p.m. on Friday, November 2, and a good attendance of Orange county growers is requested. The old-fashioned man who used to say that we ought to see America first now has a modern son who wants to see Canada first. Buick Car Patrols The Ridge Route One of the most difficult stretches in the entire state highway system for traffic patrol is the Ridge Route. The demands upon both men and motor cars extreme, not only because of the twisting road with its grades, but the varying climatic conditions from sizzling heat to snow stodms. So for this husky job, two stalwarts of the Los Angeles county traffic squad have been selected, R. H. Galbraith and Charles D. Brown. George F. Howard, Northern Orange County Buick Dealer, said that unlike the other members of the county traffic squad, Brown and Galbraith do not ride motorcycles. Instead they drive a Buick roadster of the latest model, which has replaced another Buick roadster which saw more than 65,000 miles of strenuous service "on the hill." The Ridge patrol calls for some of the most strenuous and dependable work faced by any of the motor equipment of the county. Brown and Galbraith are happy over their new equipment. "We thought we had about the best there was in our other Buick roadster, but our new Buick is the greatest car we ever drove," said Brown. "We haven't found anything that can get away from us." The patrolling of the Ridge brings varied duties to the officers. They are not there alone to overhaul speeders. Just as often they are lending a helpful hand to some motorist in need of assistance. They even have rushed sick bables to doctors and assisted in pulling stalled motorists out of snow drifts. "Many motorists driving the Ridge Route are lured into trouble by the desire to make too much speed over the Ridge Route," said Galbraith.
