Hoover's Speech Meets With Favor
Candidate to Visit Southern California This Week
The mature reaction to Herbert Hoover's acceptance speech led him and his advisers to believe that he has again reached out over the old line party leaders and again touched the rank and file.
Telegrams and letters which have piled up on his desk in the last four days have in a large part been from persons of whom experienced Washington newspaper correspondents have never heard—from Republican business men who have never been prominent in politics, from women identified with welfare organizations and from party voters as identified from the so-called party leaders.
Hoover and his friends believe the reaction to his statement of party principles has been popular rather than partisan. They say that if he has reached the rank and file, he has attained the object of his speech.
Only four of the 49 Republican U.S. senators who are most often regarded as state party leaders, sent messages of congratulations. They were Watson, Indiana; Vanderburgh, Michigan; Deene, Illinois, and Curtis, Kansas. Three other members of the party representation in the senate were present and issued statements endorsing the speech. Not a single cabinet member wired comment, although one was present and extended his congratulations in person.
Less than a dozen Republican members of the house of representatives who likewise are looked upon by Washingtonians as important party representatives added their words of commendation.
But the editorial comment from both Republican and independent papers added to the large number of telegrams and letters which have been received have convinced the campaign advisers around Hoover's office that the silence of few is to be desired in view of the applause of many. It is known the nominee left much out of the speech.
LEAVE FOR HAWAII
Miss Myrtle A. Winters and Miss Lova Holt, Registrar and Science teacher, respectively of the Anaheim Union High school, left last Saturday on the S. S. City of Los Angeles for the Hawaiian Islands. Sometimes ago they obtained leaves of absence for the ensuing school year in order to make an extended stay on the islands. For a time they will be located in Oahu, where Miss Winters has relatives. Though they went with expectations of staying till late next year, their many friends believe the lure of Anaheim will be too great and that Miss Winters, at least; will be back the first part of 1929.
BUY HOME-MADE GOODS
Europe always can do a fair business with the United States, for this country is a large buyer of foreign goods at all times. Even in the products that are made in this country, there is a field for creation of business by foreign producers. The commerce of the United States shows interesting cross-currents of trade, with the same products coming into the country that are going out of it. This is a logical outcome of the humane desire for particular styles, designs or construction, or perchance for something exotic. But, on the whole, a home industry logically should have the equivalent of all the home market that it can supply.
This country has a manufacturing capacity which allows it to make exports on a vast scale. This does not mean that it must seek markets held by others and take them away. As is explained by Dr. Julius Klein, director of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce, an important part of our foreign trade is due rather to marked expansion of sales in commodities not previously supplied by any country than to usurpation of markets hitherto held by other nations. He finds that two vital elements govern our foreign business, rather than what our rivals are doing: first, the market prospects in any given area; second, our capacity to produce and export the desired commodities.
If other countries entered the American markets on this basis of supplying something that is lacking here...
extended his congratulations in person.

But the editorial comment from both Republican and independent papers added to the large number of telegrams and letters which have been received have convinced the campaign advisers around Hoover's office that the silence of few is to be desired in view of the applause of many. It is known the nominee left much out of the speech that some leaders had demanded and treated his subjects independent of many suggestions from the influential. This may explain some of the influential silence Hoover's friends say.
President Coolidge took occasion to comment upon the popular reception of the speech in his telegram of congratulations.
Arrangements were completed to enable the nominee to attend a special Iowa picnic at Long Beach, Calif.
The motor trip of the nominee to Long Beach had been called off previously, but he was notified by long distance phone from Los Angeles that a new picnic was being arranged and that he would be expected to attend.
Both the Los Angeles and the West Branch, Iowa, speeches now are concluded and advance copies for newspapers are soon to be given out in confidential form.
Plans for the trip to Washington were announced at Hoover headquarters. The nominee's special train will arrive at Santa Barbara at 8 a.m., Friday for a motor trip to the old mission and the sunken garden.
He will leave there at 10 a.m., arriving at Glendale at 12:30 p.m. He will motor from Glendale to the city hall of Los Angeles, where he is scheduled to arrive at 1:40 p.m.
After the city hall ceremonies he will motor to Long Beach for the Pacific Southwest Exposition and the special Iowa picnic.
Later he will stop at Pasadena and San Bernardino. Arizona county chairmen will board his train at Williams, Arizona, Saturday and will confer with him about the Arizona situation while he visits the Grand Canyon.
Rear platform appearances will be made at Gallup, Albuquerque and other New Mexico towns.

Assessed Valuations Of School Districts
Most of Them Show An Increase Over Past Year
Assessed valuations upon Orange county property of the non-operative or taxable class, for 1928-1929, as segregated by cities and districts, were made public at Santa Ana by County Auditor W. C. Jerome.
The increase of $7,526,685 in total valuation over last year was quite uniformly spread over the county, it was shown by an examination of the school district valuations, which cover the entire total. Thirty-seven districts gained, while twelve decreased in valuation.
Those failing to equal last year's level were Drea, Buena Park, Cypress, Fulerton, La Habra, Lowell-Joint, Olinda, Peralta and Placentia, all in the third supervisorial district; Diamond in the second district and San Joaquin in the fifth district.

PLANS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FETTY-GREEN MINE IN SUTTER CREEK ARE NOW BEING RAPIDLY WORKED OUT BY A. S. Dewe, superintendent of the Central Eureka mine, which has owned the property for four years. The program has been financed by a remarkably productive sale of treasury stock on the San Francisco exchange within the last few days. One of the first moves contemplated is the driving of a tunnel 1700 feet long to connect the Hetty-Green shaft at 3500 feet with the Central Eureka shaft at about 3300 feet so as to provide better ventilation and working conditions for both mines. The Hetty-Green mine produced $20,000,000 above the 1700-foot level in the early days of its operation.
One sweetly solemn thought concerning the war in China is, no matter who wins or loses it the taxpayers of the United States won't have to pay for it.
It takes two to make a bootlegger.
States amount to 1,496,928. The grand total of enrollments in all types of schools mentioned in the report is 31,037,736.
We can challenge any other country in the world with these figures. Yet probably education was never so important as it is in the United States today. Education is vitally needed to enable people to cope with the vast materialistic forces that have been let loose; it is necessary to enable us to keep our feet on the earth.
The You Bet Mining company, Nevada county, was sold the past week to C. E. Hayden of St. Louis, Missouri, under bond and lease. This is one of the famous old producers and the sale price represents a considerable figure.
MISS REA REPORTS CASH BALANCE OF $1211
The Orange County Crippled Children's Relief association will present to the budget committee of the Santa Ana Community Chest, at its next meeting, a request for $1500 for next year, according to action taken at a meeting of the directors of the association held in the Anaheim Elks' club.
Pointing out that the requested amount will be $500 more than the association asked for last year, E. S. Morrow, of Santa Ana, president of the relief organization, said this has been made necessary by stringent regulations recently adopte dby the county in classification of indigents that have resulted in the withdrawal of county funds used in payment of treatment of children suffering from deformities.
Morrow asserted that a little more liberal policy by the county in the past made possible assistance for children whose parents were not indigents but who were in such circumstances.

While the association is asking $500 more from the Santa Ana chest, it has reduced its estimated operating costs for the coming year by $1000, the budget being set at $5000 instead of $6000. The allotment for the year has been based on operative costs of the last year, which were approximately $5000. The association has maintained an excellent service and splendid results have followed the efforts of the year, it was revealed at the meeting of the directors. Comment was made that the budgeted amount would not provide funds for expansion of the work of the organization, but the hope was expressed that contributions from the general public of the county would exceed that amount. Outside of Santa Ana the association conducts its own campaign for funds and it is possible the drive will result in donations that will exceed the amount designated as sufficient for conduct of the humane work of the association on the basis of its operations in the last year.

Present at the meeting yesterday were E. S. Morrow, Miss Grace Bailey, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Brown, Miss Rea, Mrs. Emery White, Mrs. Cood Adams, Mrs. Eva Copeland, Mrs. Crowell and Horace Fine.
