Estimate Valuation Of Walnut Industry Carlyle Thorpe Places the Figure at $140,000,000 "The valuation of the walnut industry in California has been conservatively estimated to be $140,000,000," says Carlyle Thorpe, executive secretary of the California Walnut Growers' association. "California produces 98 per cent of the entire amount of walnuts grown in the United States. At the present time, there are 130,000 acres of walnut trees of various ages within the state. "The English walnut may be seen growing in nearly every county in the state of California." "Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Barbara, Riverside and San Bernardino counties have a considerable area of young groves for commercial production, and in the central part of the state walnut culture is becoming important in Santa Clara, San Jonquil, Contra Costa, Napa and Somona counties. "The present condition of the industry indicates that walnuts may continue to be one of the most profitable crops which can be grown on land particularly adapted to this crop. The annual consumption of walnuts in the United States has quadrupled since 1909. Nuts, which were formerly looked upon as a holiday luxury, are becoming more and more of a food to be used the year through in the average household." Again Wins Harriman Medal Prize For the Best Organized Safety and Prevention Work For the third time in four years the E. H. Harriman memorial gold medal "for the most conspicuous organized safety and prevention work" on American railroads has been won by the Union Pacific, according to an announcement by Arthur Williams, president of the American Museum of Safety in New York. The award is made annually by the museum and the one just announced is for 1927. The award committee consisted of Mr. Williams who is vice-president in charge of commercial relations of the New York Edison company and president of the American Museum of Safety; R. H. Alashton, president, American Railway association; John J. Esch, former chairman of the Interstate Commerce commission; Samuel O. Dunn, editor of the "Railway Age;" Julius H. Parmelee, director of the Bureau of Railway Economics; F. D. Underwood, retired president of the Erie railroad and advisor to the committee on behalf of Mrs. E. H. Harriman, who offers the medal in memory of her husband. The Union Pacific was winner of the medal for the years 1924 and 1925. "The Union Pacific has always enjoyed a noteworthy record for safety and accident prevention performances," says the official report by Mr. Williams. "Over this line's previous excellent record its 1927 performance shows a marked reduction of fatalities." Comparing 1927 with 1926 passenger fatalities were reduced from 13 to 6 and fatalities to all other persons, including those at highway crossings, from 31 to 22. The total reduction in fatalities was from 45 in 1926 to 28 in 1927, or 37.8 per cent. Non-fatal injuries were reduced from 276 in 1926 to 228 in 1927, both records being ex- HANNALEE A Beautiful Subdivision Water. This stretch of broken shoreline has probably been reproduced on more pieces of canvas by the brushes of famous artists than any other place on the Pacific Coast. Laguna Beach is one of those unusual watering places that makes one want to linger along its rugged coast and play in the waters of its sandy coves or gaze enraptured at its gorgeous sunsets. Laguna Beach is one of the principal tourists attractions of the Southland. The calm waters of the spacious landlocked bay at Newport and Balboa Beach furnishes the most popular course for speed-boat racing in Southern California and is the "home port" for every conceivable kind of pleasure craft from the chummy canoe to the palatial yacht. Here all kinds of aquatic sports are enjoyed in the sparkling waters of the bay on one side and the rolling surf of the Pacific on the otherside of the Peninsula. Balboa and Newport beaches are popularly called the "collegiate playgrounds" on account of the aquatic recreations such as rowing, canoeing, sailing, yachting, motor boating, equipping, surf bathing, still water bathing, surf fishing and deep water fishing. Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Balboa Beach, Huntington Beach, Long Beach and other popular beaches around Los Angeles are easily reached by the convenient and frequent service provided by the luxurious coaches of the Motor Transit Stages from Anaheim. Recent reductions in the Motor Transit fares to many of the above places have also increased the popularity of these seaside resorts. THINGS WORTH KNOWING Q.—What nationality was Henrik Ibsen? GRAPEFRUIT STANDARD The Ggrapefruit club recently recommended to the Exchange board of directors that the Sunkist mututury standard for grapefruit be raised to five and one-half parts of soluble solids to one of acid; also that steps be taken to have the state law changed to the same standard with the additional provision that fruit must have 25 per cent natural color before pickling. The latter recommendation has been referred to the California Citrus League for an expression of their views. The present state and Sunkist standard is five to one. Members of the committee pointed out that the Union Pacific has one of the most efficient organizations for safety and accident prevention among railroads of the United States and has had this efficient organization for a number of years." In addition to the gold medal to which railroads operating 10 million or more locomotive miles were eligible, a silver medal for lines with one to ten million locomotive miles was won by the DuLuth and Iron Range railroad and a bronze medal for railroads with less than one million locomotive miles was awarded by Texas Mexican railway. Certificates of honorable mention were awarded to the Seabourd Air line, the Delaware Lackawanna and Western, the Ann Arbor railroad and the New Orleans and Northwestern railroad. The award just announced for the Union Pacific is the fifth first award which that system or its constituent companies have received during the present year for leadership in safety work." The four first prizes of the National Safety Council for the lowest accident rates among employees on all American railroads during the year 1927 and the two to four, preceding years, were awarded respectively unto the Union Pacific system, the Union Pacific railroad, the Oregon Short Line railroad and the Los Angeles and Salt Lake railroad, all units of the Union Pacific system.
