Demand Growing For Orange Juice Becoming More Popular With People of the East A strong consumer demand for oranges during the first half of July placed the valencia market in excellent condition with prices advanced somewhat and the trade closely cleaned up on supplies. Hot weather stimulated demand, demonstrating the importance of orange juice consumption and the fact that this drink is firmly established, not only for its food and health value, but as a thirst quencher as well. Competitive fruits continue in generous supply and mostly at reasonable prices. Imperial Valley canteloupes are about done with shipments almost 1500 cars ahead of last year. Other districts will furnish a full supply of this commodity. Shipments of peaches from Georgia, also California, are heavy and will continue so throughout July and August. Shipments of California pears are now going forward, and it is estimated that there will be shipped in the neighborhood of 10,000 cars, as compared with 2000 cars last year. These will be shipped mostly during July and August and will be followed by pears from Oregon and Washington. It is estimated that approximately 2000 cars of California apples will be moved during the next six weeks, during which time only 900 cars were shipped last year. There is a crop of about 5000 cars of California plums, of which 2000 cars have been sent forward. The July 1st estimate showed a slight decrease in valencias. Taking this estimate as a basis, and the anticipated movement during July, the percentage of the crop to be moved after Auguits 1st will be 37 per cent, as compared Professor Hodgson Honors This County By ERIC E. EASTMAN Assistant Farm Advisor Orange county is the only county that will have more than one excursion from the University of California Summer School at Riverside, according to Professor R. W. Hodgson of the Department of Subtropical Horticulture. This is due both to the remarkably high degree of specialization and intensive types of agriculture practiced here; and to the many historic plantings which can be visited here, through the courtesy of the owners. The first exursion was held last Saturday, and several instructive stops were made. The first was at the vineyard of C. E. Utt on Lemon Heights. Professors F. T. Bioletti and Ira J. Condit were in charge of the discussion at this, the largest vineyard of American grape in the state. Mr. Utt welcomed the group and described his management problems with many satirical witteisms that greatly delighted the students. He won them entirely by supplying a drink of the famous Utt grape juice, topped off with a slice of papaya. The students came from many parts of the world—India, South Africa, Egypt, Brazil, etc., and will carry the message of Orange county back home with them. Other stops were made to inspect old Valencia and hillside plantings, stressing the difference between level, contour and terraced orchards. The aplend co-operation of the owners and managers of the various properties visited reflected much credit to the county. The second and final tour in Orange county will be made on Saturday, August 4, and will stress management and control problems of subtropical fruits. Contract Let For Highway Widening The state highway commission has awarded the contract for the state's share in the widening and repaving of Spadra road between Fullerton and Anaheim to Bartlett and Mathwa, Pasadena contractors, for $33,803.45. This bid was $4947 less than the engineer's estimate for the work, which was $38,720. As the county board of supervisors have already let the contract for the county's share of the project to the Griffith company of Los Angeles for $32,600, actual work is expected to start about August 1, according to Natt Neff, county highway superintendent, Santa Ana. The South Spadra project as now worked out, will mean that the share of the cost to be paid by the improvement district along the street will amount to $22,100. The present 18-foot pavement is to be widened to 56 feet for a distance of three-quarters of a mile. Aviators, it is said, an now play golf up in the sky and we suppose the holes are furnished by the airpockets. Culls of Avocados Yield Oil For Soap Another agricultural waste may be turned to profit as the result of experiments in the laboratories of the Bureau of Chemistry and Soils, United States Department of Agriculture. In the commercial production of the avocado there are large quantities of cull fruit that are not up to market standards. No extensive use has been made of those culls, but it has been known for some time that the fruit contained a considerable percentage of oil, which it was thought might be useful if it could be recovered. Attempts to press the culls were not successful, for this resulted in an emulsion of the oil with the watery juice of the fruit which was not adopted for use as an edible or industrial oil. Recently chemists in the bureau have attacked the problem anew, first by dehydration of the sliced avocados at ordinary temperature, followed by pressing the difference between live, contour and terraced orchards. The splendid co-operation of the owners and managers of the various properties visited reflected much credit to the county. The second and final tour in Orange county will be made on Saturday, August 4, and will stress management and control problems of subtropical fruits. THE WHOLE WORKS An exchange prints a little story, clipped from an unknown source, which is very good and perhaps also very old. Anyway, it is worth repeating. It concerns an Omaha jobbing house and a customer merchant in an Iowa cross-roads town. A shipment of goods received by the customer was rejected as unsatisfactory. The jobber prepared to institute suit for collection, and wrote to the railroad agent at the village for information about the arrival of the merchandise; to the president of the bank for information concerning the financial standing of their customer; to the mayor of the city asking him to recommend a good lawyer to handle their case, and to the merchant himself, threatening suit, if he did not make payment at once. This reply was received: "I received your letter telling me I had better pay up. "I am the railroad agent here and received the letter you wrote the agent." "I am the president and sole owner of the local bank and can assure you as to my financial standing." "As the favor of the city, I hesitate to refer you to a lawyer, since I am the only number of the bar in this vicinity. Recently chemists in the bureau have attacked the problem anew, first by dehydration of the alice avocados at ordinary temperature, followed by pressing. In some instances the oil content of the avocados proved to be as much as 70 per cent of the water-free weight of the fruit. The oil obtained from the Fuente variety of avocado by either expression or solvent extraction has a dark-green color by transmitted light and is red by reflected light. It is probably too dark for use as a commercial edible oil, although it has little odor and a pleasant fruity flavor. The oil, when suponified, makes a hard soap. Tests indicate that the oil does not become rancid during a year's storage under ordinary conditions. The chemists of the bureau will be glad to advise any manufacturers who are interested in the production of oil from cull avocados. COST OF A CAR After long and careful investigation the American Motorists association announces that the average automobile costs the average American Motorist $255.00 per year—one dollar per day—outside of cost of garage. The operation and maintenance of big car cost each motorist $229, while the depreciation was figured at $136. The depreciation was based on the seven-year expectancy of a passenger automobile and the average retail price of $553 for the year. Fuel and lubricants represented 44 per cent of the operation bill, or $101. The mechanics charged $47 for their time, while replacement parts totaled $41 and the tire bill was $40. Estimating that five millions of cars are operated by wage workers whose average earnings are about $1500 per year, this puts a heavy drag on credits for household supplies and foodstuffs for the family.
