PAGE FOUR Lido Isle Speed-Boats Provide a Thrill to Those Low Bids Submitted For Paving Road Mr. and Mrs. Frank Borth and their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gibbs, are spending a few days at Catalina Island. WHEREAS, payable on the said Reservation, the am Low Bids Submitted For Paving Road Bids considerably under the state's estimate of $34,000 as the cost of improvement were received today by the county supervisors in connection with the contract for re-surfacing and widening the state highway between Anaheim and Fullerton. The lowest bid on the half of the contract to be paid by the county and the improvement district formed along Spadra road, was $32,600, filed by the Griffith company, of Los Angeles. All bids were taken under advisement until next Tuesday. Under the state's estimate, the county and district's share of the cost would have been $42,000. Should the bid of the Griffith company be accepted, the improvement district would pay approximately $20,000 of the cost, as the county will contribute about $12,000 to assist the district. The plans call for re-surfacing the highway and widening it to 50 feet, with curbing. Subtropical Fruits Featured at Fair The Agricultural Extension Service will again have charge of the subtropical fruit exhibits at the Orange County Fair this year. Orange county has long been noted for its great variety of subtropicals. Her foothill sections and the warmer areas of the county find a favorable environment for many of the tender fruits which are native to the tropical regions of the world. The papaya, feljao, guava, banana, avocado, cherimoya, carissa, mango and many other fruits will be featured at the exhibit, which will harmonize with this year's motif, "The Garden Beautiful." The Farm Advisor is now arranging with growers of the many uncommon fruits to prepare specimens for the County Fair in September. Cash prizes will be offered this year for the best specimens of each variety in the exhibit. Delegates Pay Visit To Orange County Over 100 delegates to the American Co-Operative Institute, which opened sessions in Los Angeles this week, were taken through Orange County on Tuesday by the Farm Advisor's staff. The handling and packing of citrus fruit was given special attention. The group visited packing houses at Phoenix. A large and appreciative audience witnessed the entertainment which reflected great credit upon both the directors and the participants. With the number of college graduates that are being turned out each year you wouldn't think there would be so many public questions remaining unsolved. One time when it doesn't pay to be popular is when the commencement and wedding invitations are mailed out. The main sessions of the Institute will open at Berkeley next Monday, July 16, for a period of four weeks. An attendance of over 400 co-operative representatives from all parts of the United States, Canada and other parts of the world is anticipated. DR. BALL'S CANDIDACY For forty-one years Dr. Ball has been a resident of Santa Ana and has been actively engaged in its development. In 1889 he added in the fight for county division. Since then the interests of Orange county have been his interests. He is now serving his second term as assemblymap. He has been very active in the legislature. In the session of 1927, he introduced twenty-one bills, sixteen of which reached the governor. Fourteen of these bills became law. Nearly all of them affected Orange county. His chief achievement was the Ball Flood Control Act for Orange county: This is really a water conservation act that means much for the future of the county. He is a Republican and favors the election of the National ticket—Hoover and Curtis. He favors the Young administration; he favors the Boulder Dam project, the most vital problem confronting Southern California; he favors the Wright Act; he stands for the Farm Bureau and good roads. With the number of college graduates that are being turned out each year you wouldn't think there would be so many public questions remaining unsolved. One time when it doesn't pay to be popular is when the commencement and wedding invitations are mailed out.
