Natural History Taught By Library
Fish and Game Commission Maintains a Library at San Francisco
In order to make it an assured fact that the people of California, who are seeking knowledge regarding fish and game and natural history subjects, an excellent library under the supervision of a trained natural history librarian is maintained at the headquarters of the Division of Fish and Game in the Postal Telegraph Building in San Francisco.
In speaking of the work of the library, Bessie W. Kibbe, efficient librarian, explains that the 475 volumes, 6000 pamphlets and the official publications of the fish and game departments of other states are given much attention. Letters are received by the hundreds asking for information, and many visitors call daily to consult the reference books and files of out-door magazines that are kept in the library.
The laws of all of the states and territories as well as those of the Canadian provinces are on file and are often consulted. Books on birds, fish, mammals, crustaceans, oceanography, nature study, reptiles, insects, zoology and biology and five natural history sets make up the scientific section, while authentic works on fur farming, game bird farming, fishing and other fish and game subjects are included in the extensive reference list.
Questions are asked regarding fish ponds, identification, seasons, drying, acclimatization and diseases of fish; identification, economic value, poisons, migration, songs, houses, eggs and life history of birds; game bird farming; fur farming, muskrats, hunting, deer, mountain lions, squirrels and trapping of animals, as well as those regarding alligator farming.
Mrs. Kibbe says that the most popular books in the past few months have been those on fur farming and game farming, and Treesler's "Marine Products of the Sea."
Many geographical, botanical and states of California, Nevada and Arizona are being scheduled for Oakland and will follow immediately the California playoffs.
In speaking of the tournament, Bert Mann of Owensmouth, state athletic head for the Legion declares:
"We feel that in promoting junior baseball as part of the American Legion program every eligible boy will be given a big chance to learn clean sportsmanship, the fundamental objective of good citizenship. We want to have a hand in giving the men of tomorrow an even chance at being worthwhile citizens and through baseball, ably supervised by experienced men, we intend to do our part."
Challenge to all American Legion glee clubs to compete at the national convention to be held in San Antonio, October 8 to 12 will be broadcast by the San Diego Post, No. 6, Glee Club, Department champions, during a special two-hour program, over Station KFSD (440.9 meters, 650 kilocycles) from 10 to 12 p.m. on July 9th.
San Diego Post is putting on a special program dedicated to the national convention here, according to announcement received from Post Commander A.W. Roshe by James K. Fisk, state adjutant.

THE WORLD MOVES
We are living in what the current historians call the "scientific age." The past few generations—which measure only a day in history—have given more to the cause of science than all of the preceding generations combined. It is no longer good policy to say that it can't be done. The very next day some enterprising American or European is apt to come along and do it. Present achievements and those promised in the future would almost justify the statement that no accomplishment in the purely material world is impossible to man once he has set his hand to the task.

This past year with Philip F. Dodson, of South Pasadena, as Department Commander and Frank Belgrano, Jr., of San Francisco as Membership Chairman, the Legion has approached the 40,000 mark in membership. This final campaign is expected to net them another 10,000 names thereby breaking all former records in the state and putting the Golden Bear near the front in national standing.
Every post is girding itself for the campaign with many novel stunts being planned. The object is to end the fiscal year of the Legion at the Stockton Convention, August 13 to 15, with a record membership total.
With junior baseball teams entering the final games of the preliminary series, interest among boys between 13 and 17 years of age is at a high point. The prize at stake for the final winner of the junior baseball world's series is trip East as guests of the American Legion, who are sponsoring the games, to see the big league series.
Practically every post in the state now has at least one teaf of 14 boys entered in the big sandlot tournament which is attracting thousands of young baseball players into the national past time. Ever since the Legion announced its plan of backing junior baseball big league stars, managers and owners of clubs have been watching developments with a keen eye. From the young players, on the verge of manhood, will come the future Babe Ruths, Lou Gehrigs and Walter Johnson. Never before have the younger generation taken to baseball as they have since the Legion started its tournament, according to Bert C. Mann, chairman in charge of the Legion program for boys.
State championship games are billed for Los Angeles late in July, while the triple state contests, involving the

To the lower orders of life these Divine and spiritual attributes were denied. The beasts of the field and birds of the air would have roamed around for countless ages without converting the great forests and the products of the mines to their own use. The world would have been unchanged in its physical aspects but for the coming of man.

tempting to extort funds from ignorant and superstitious people by exhibiting a device which he says will convey the human voice any distance over metallic wires so that it will be heard by the listener at the other end. He calls the instrument a 'telephone,' which is obviously intended to imitate the word 'telegraph' and win the confidence of those who know of the success of the latter instrument without understanding the principles on which it is based.
"Well-informed people know that it is impossible to transmit the human voice over wires as may be done with dots and dashes and signals of the Morse code, and that, were it possible to do so, the thing would be of no practical value. The authorities who apprehended this criminal are to be congratulated, and it is hoped that his punishment will be prompt and fitting, that it may serve as an example to other conscienceless schemers who enrich themselves at teh expense of their fellow creatures."
Yet the telephone was perfected and now has come its younger brother, the radio, who is still an infant, albeit a lusty growing one. And the end is not yet. If you see some ambitious youth experimenting with the fantastic, don't tell him it can't be done. Tomorrow he may fool you.
WALKER'S BLARNEY
Mayor Jimmy Walker of New York is a great man to hand out blarney. "This is a sweet spot," he said of Houston as he looked out of his hotel window and said that he would recommend to Al Smith that the summer White House be located in that region! He is coming to California after the convention. What will he say about California which is worthy of our state in comparison with Houston and Texas? But such speeches are Jimmy's stock in trade. He will say a plenty.
The United States debt has been cut nearly nine billion dollars since the peak in 1919. Who said that Andy Mellen hadn't been earning his salary?
Newspaper dispatches say that the result of the recent primary in Florida was very close. The real estates' vote must have been badly split.

SECTION 2: All other conditions, except minimum charges and rates for water, shall be governed as hereby provided in this Ordinance.

SECTION 4: The City Clerk of the City of Anaheim shall certify to the passage of this ordinance and shall cause the same to be printed and published once in the Anaheim Gazette, a newspaper of general circulation, printed, published and circulated in said city, and thirty (30) days from and after its final passage it shall take effect and be in full force.
