Neff of Los Angeles were in town during the week meeting with many old-time friends. They came down on Monday and returned to their home the following day. Mrs. W. K. Humbert and little daughter, Janice, of Phoenix, who are spending the summer months in Los Angeles and Long Beach, were week-end guests of relatives in town. Quarton, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Amack and their little daughter, Emily Wayne, and Mrs. Lois Jewell and her tow children, Richard and Mary, are spending the week at Big Bear. Miss Katherine Adams, who is a student at the University of Oregon, is interested in the Persimmon Culture Growing Industry Orange County Leads All Others in Production One of the most attractive winter fruits which Southern California produces is the vivid persimmon. Coming at the holiday season, it attracts the eye with its gay exterior, and delights the tongue with its sweet taste: Even ice cream is now being both colored and flavored, with this fruit, and the market is constantly increasing. Yet it was only last season that the persimmon made its professional bow to the world with a standardized pack, and an official name. This first step was achieved by the formation of the Southern California Persimmon Growers' Association in Orange county, where a definite need was felt for a marketing organization. Since many of its sponsors were veterans, in co-operative work, that sort of selling medium was the only one considered. The fruit is sold through the California Fruit Exchange, with a "Blue Anchor" trade mark. Originally the plan embraced only Orange county, but a more comprehensive movement was considered essential and consequently the association is open to all Southern California territory. The officers all live in Orange county, the president, J. M. Alcorn, in Fullerton; the vice-president, H. R. Smith, and H. W. Walker, secretary-treasurer, in Santa Ana. Two divisions of the association were made, the Central Orange county and Southern Orange County Growers. This was to facilitate packing. Each has its own packaging personnel, and each its separate plant, although both ship under the same "Solid Gold" label. The arrangement is very similar to the subdivisions in the orange business. With increased production next year, a Northern Orange county branch may be organized. Since most trees are young there will certainly be much notice of the election to cause described in said deed sold in accordance with contained in said deed. WHEREAS, William ma L. Webater, his wife trust dated the 14th day filed April 23rd, 1927, certificate No. 4584, Documents of the office of the Register County, California, didvey the premises thereafter described to the National Trust and Saving Angeles, as Trustee, to other things the payment sory note in the principal Thirty-five Hundred and 500.00 Dollars, with inthe 14th, 1927, until paid seven per cent per quarterly; said principals months after date, in chants National Trust Bank of Los Angeles, an WHEREAS, the said provides that in case of made in the payment sums of principal or interest thereon immediate payable and may require Trustee shall sell the property be necessary to pay the paid and secured by said and. Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Quarton, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Amack and their little daughter, Emily Wayne, and Mrs. Lois Jewell and her tow children, Richard and Mary, are spending the week at Big Bear. Miss Katherine Adams, who is a student at the University of Oregon, is attending the summer session of the University of California at Los Angeles. Arthur Warner, member of the crew of the U. S. S. Selfridge, came up from San Diego on Tuesday on a 72-hour leave of absence. While here he stayed at the home of his uncle, A. D. Brownell, of West Center street. The Selfridge weighs anchor shortly for a two-weeks trip to Hawaii and will not return to San Diego till in the fall. At that time Mr. Warner will have spent 4 years with Uncle Sam's Navy. Rev. and Mrs. Markle Celebrate Anniversary The Rev. and Mrs. A. R. Markle, 201 South Citron street, celebrated their sixty-third wedding anniversary on Thursday last. Many beautiful bouquets of flowers and a number of lovely gifts were sent or taken to the Markle residence by their friends. At noon a bountiful dinner was served to a small group of relatives and friends who were guests of Rev. and Mrs. Markle for the happy occasion. Other relatives and friends spent the afternoon visiting with the elderly couple. Among those received at the Markle home were Mrs. M. P. Sullivan, a niece from Los Angeles, Miss Mella Suillivan and Mrs. Nell Baldwin, both of Los Angeles; Mrs. S. P. Markle and Mrs. W. A. Dolan and her daughter, Miss Geraldine of Anaheim. The Woman's Relief Corps was among those sending beautiful flowers for the occasion. The Markles have lived in Anaheim for 24 years and enjoy a host of acquaintances and friends here. Until fourteen years ago Rev. Markle was pastor of the First Christian church and until ten years ago Mrs. Markle was superintendent of the Sunday school. Rev. Markle was an active minister for 51 years. Funeral of Olive Pioneer Monday Funeral service swere held Monday afternoon for Mrs. August Borchard, 79, who passed away Friday afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albert Helm, 145 Anaheim road. The services were held in St. Paul's Lutheran church, the Rev... E. Kreidt, pastor of the church, conducting the services. Mrs. Borchard has been a resident of this vicinity for the most part. ton; the vice-president, H. Since most trees are young, there will certainly be much more fruit next season and plans are being made to handle a greatly increased output. So far citrus houses have been utilized for packing, the central growers using a house in Fullerton, and the southern shipping from the Tustin Lenon Association house. Already some fine results are in evidence. The fruit needs careful handling in both picking and packing; and the association has seen that this is done. Whereas before perishments were wont to meet the market in almost any sort of container, with little attention to grade, they are now standardized both as to container and grade. The two-layer lug which once was commonly seen is now discarded altogether and a new 3½-inch peach box is substituted which will accommodate but one layer. The weight of this flat is about eleven pounds, and it improves both the condition and appearance of the fruit. Sizing is very carefully watched. There are 20's, 24's, 28's, 32's, 36's and 40's. Standardization laws permit a differential of half an inch in diameter between fruits in the same container, but variation in the association is much less than this. Many of the packs are diagonal, though some, especially the smaller, are straight. The East last season liked the smaller sizes, especially the 32's, until the holiday season when the larger fruits were bought more readily. Los Angeles always favors the large packs. The color of fruit is quite as carefully watched as is the size, and Number 1 fruit is all 10 per cent full color. Even Number 2's carry almost as good a color, but these may contain skin blemishes, though no misshapen fruit is allowed. This second grade stuff meets all eating requirements, lacking only the faultless exterior of the first. It is, however, not sold as "Solid Gold." Though it receives exactly the same care in packing, and sells in the same sort of one-layer box, it must go unlabelled. This is to insure the trade which demands that nothing but perfect fruit ever receive the official stamp of the association. Persimmon growers believe that in this way their name can be made to mean to the trade what "Sunkist" now means to orange consumers. In fact, the experience gained by those who have been associated for years with the orange marketing plan has been of invaluable help in forming new selling organizations for other fruits. The emphasis which has been put upon fruit being uniform and true to label is all. CHURCH NOTICE First Church of Christ, Scientist—a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass.—Philadelphia street at Chartres. The Sunday school, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Testimonial meeting every Wednesday at 8 p.m. The free reading room, 304 Bank of Italy building, is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Sunday and legal holidays. Persimmons growing is common to most of the southern counties, but best developed in the coastal group of Orange, Los Angeles and San Diego. Ventura and Santa Barbara, farther north, and Riverside and San Bernardino, in the interior, also grow the fruit. Northern California is interested, too, and in 1925 a California Persimmons Growers' Association was formed largely for informative purposes. Its home is Placer county. Until recently, the growing of persimmons in California has been on a rather hit-and-miss basis because plots have been small and scattered. A tabulation of actual acreage is on that account difficult. But in the last few years an increase has been very evident and this has been in larger blocks. Some orchards have been set solid to persimmons, while some are interset with citrus. Especially is this true of the younger citrus groves in both Los Angeles and Orange county. The San Joaquin or Irvine ranch in Orange county in its new development has done this quite extensively. Recently, 160 acres on this ranch planted part to lemons and part to oranges was interset throughout with persimmons. This planting was made by James Irvine, Arthur McFadden and Herbert Walker, and because of its size, has attracted considerable attention. Persimmons begin yielding a small amount of fruit in the third year. At maturity a tree yields some 250 pounds. Little pruning is necessary in the care of the tree, but wind conditions must be watched. TERMS OF SALE: money of the United States Dated: July 3rd, 1928 Merchants National Trust Bank of Los Angeles.
