Police Interrupt Mexican Blowout Seventy-Six Men Arrested on a Charge of Cock Fighting Sheriff's officers Sunday broke up a hilarious Mexican jubilee on the old Emery lease near Fullerton and arrested 75 men on a charge of cock fighting. There were many women in the party, but none of them were placed under arrest. All of those arrested, with one exception, were Mexicans, and all were booked at the county jail on charges of cock fighting. The lone exception was J. Monto, Wilmington, who walked up to Harry Carter, deputy sheriff, and demanded to know who he was. Carter told him and then asked Monto the same. "Why, I am a representative of Bob Shuler. You know him?" Carter informed the stranger he knew of Shuler, but that that was no reason why Monto shouldn't make the trip to the county jail with the other 75 arrested. The celebration probably was the largest ever raided in this county and it required several trucks to carry the prisoners to the county jail. The raid was in charge of Carter and Jess Elliott, with five Fullerton officers aid-ing. When the officers arrived on the scene, according to Carter, chicken fights were in evidence in several places, "black-jack" games were flourishing, soft drink stands were doing a rushing business and one Mexican wedding actually taken place. The groom was among those brought to jail, in spite of his pleading that he had come to the scene merely for the purpose of being married. Carter said he believed the man's story and did not intend to charge him with cock-fighting, but in the scramble to get all the prisoners in jail, the unfortunate groom was "lost in the crowd," so spent the night in the county bastle. Collins, phone Orange County Forest Protective Association 314-W," is the advice issued by the citation, which completed the organization of their fighting force at a meeting in Orange June 15. "In case you fail to raise Collins, try John R. Ragan, assistant fire chief, phone Orange 758-W or your nearest crew leader," continues the advice. F. H. Collins was selected as dispatcher for the fire protection organization, owing to his position which makes it usually possible to reach him easily. It will be his duty on receiving news of a fire to dispatch the crew nearest the emergency and act as the business manager during the conflagration. W. E. Adkinson, county fire warden, was elected fire chief at the meeting, but as he is usually on patrol duty during the fire season, he requested the election of an assistant. John R. Ragan was selected for this position and will have general charge of fires until Mr. Adkinson arrives. Various citrus packing houses have agreed to furnish and equip ten men each for fire fighting and these crews will be placed in charge of crew leaders who are being trained in fire fighting by the association. This degree has been awarded only eight times by Oberlin and was conferred on Dr. Ward in recognition of his work in applying the results of scientific research to field of electrical and mechanical engineering. One year ago, Dr. Ward was given the honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering by the University of Southern California. In 1925 he was the recipient of a bronze medallion which was presented by the United States Chamber of Commerce upon the completion of the famous Florence Lake Tunnel in the high Sierras. Dr. Ward began his engineering career in New York State on various projects. As chief engineer for the attention of Collis P. Huntington Raquette Lake Railway, he attracted and as a logical sequence became associated with the late Henry E. Huntington when the latter began his work as the Empire Builder of Southern California. Since 1900 Dr. Ward has been interested in electrical projects in Southern and Central California, the Big Creek development of the Edison Company being his best known work. at Villa Park, Orange 8715-R-3; Louis Frostfer, 269 N. "Can Argentine ants be successfully controlled?" "What is the State doing to protect the citrus industry?" These and many other questions will be discussed and answered at the Annual Southern California Pest Control Conference to be held this year at the Union High School auditorium 'at Fullerton on Saturday, June 30, 9:30 a.m. R. S. Wenglum, entomologist of the California Fruit Growers Exchange, will give the results of his investigations on the comparative efficiency of fumigation and spraying as methods of holding down the citrus scales. In the afternoon a representative orange grove will be visited by the growers to observe and study the comparative effects on the best as well as the tree. This is the outstanding question of the day among citrus growers. From present indications the auditorium will be well crowded by growers from all parts of Southern California in anticipation of a frank discussion of this problem. Community Argentine ant control methods in Los Angeles county will be explained by H. J. Ryan, Horticultural Commissioner of Los Angeles county. His data will be based on the results of a three-year intensive campaign in certain infested localities under his jurisdiction. The Experiment Station sent Harold Compere to Australia to secure more parasites for the meelybug and other scales. He recently returned with a number of promising and potential predator and parasite. He will describe his findings to the conference. W. C. Jacobson, in charge of the quarantine service of the State Department of Agriculture, will outline that important work in connection with the protection of the citrus and other important agricultural industries of the state. A field trip of inspection has been scheduled for the growers after lunch at 1:30 p.m. Typical fumigation and spray jobs will be examined. A visit Market Man Talks On European Citrus "Sicilian lemon growers have now had several prosperous years and their production will probably greatly increase in years to come," was the first hand information given a recent meeting of the California Fruit Growers' Exchange by Edwin Smith, specialist in marketing fruits and vegetables of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, United States Department of Agriculture, located in London. Mr. Smith recently made a survey of the Italian industry and has just returned to the United States for a study of western fruit industries. Mr. Smith is especially qualified to advise local growers having previously been manager of a Sunkist lemon packing house in 1916-17. He has been on his present assignment spending most of his time in Europe since 1924. He reported general conditions in Europe improved over a year ago. California Valencia oranges are highly appreciated in Europe during summer months, when competition is largely confined to South African oranges. During winter months high quality oranges from Jaffa and the volume of Spanish oranges makes competition more difficult according to this market expert. Mr. Smith's opinion is that the Verdell or summer lemon crop from Italy will not be over 60 per cent of a normal crop. This should curb exports to the United States after July 1st unless the American market proves much better than the European. The law provides a penalty in such cases of from five to ninety days in jail without alternative of fine. Division officials announced the maximum penalty would be sought in every case. The customary period of revocation is one year. Officers operating in counties throughout the state will be furnished with lists of persons whose licenses have been revoked with instructions to see that they do not drive until the legal revocation period expires. A new list of forty-six revocations was announced by the division bringing the total for the first five months of the year to 240. Of this number 139 lost their right to drive because of operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Thirty-one of the forty-six revocations of the last month were on similar charges, it being the purpose of the division to continue its campaign until the highways are rid of drunken drivers. Statistics show that more candy is eased in Nevada each year than in any other state. Wonder how much of this Reno is responsible for?
