Farm Waste to Be Turned Into Money Stuff Now Thrown Away Yields Numerous Products After 30 years of experimentation, Dr. O. R. Sweeney, professor of chemistry at Iowa State university, says he has found enough uses for wasted products of the farm to revolutionize farming, raise the price of land and bring much bigger profits to the farmer. Dr. Sweeney's discoveries and conclusions are upheld by such authoritative institutions as the United States Department of Agriculture and the American Chemical Society. According to the latter, proper conversion of farm wastes in the United States would mean an annual gain in the value of farm products of not less than three billion dollars! How this enormous su mean be saved the farmers each year will come under discussion at the Institute of Chemistry planned for July 23 to August 18, at Northwestern university, Evanston, Ill. Dr. Sweeney says that he has found 187 uses for products of the farm which are now wasted. The corn cob alone, which heretofore has been burned up, has become the source of 55 commercial products of considerable value, according to this scientist. One of the products, corn cob flour, promises to be a big economical factor in the plastic arts. Besides this flour, Dr. Sweeney has succeeded in getting acetic acid, alcohol, buttons, gunpowder, charcoal, artificial silk, sweeping compound, a substitute for bark in white lead manufacture, powder fuel, okalic acid, pitch, punk, glue, dynamite, absorbent, and many other by-products. Out of corn stalks, Dr. Sweeney has obtained alpha cellulose, bedding for stock, building blocks, cellulose nitrate and acetate, artificial silk, wall board, pyroxylin, lumber substitute, and many chemicals. Of what considerable influence the use of waste has on the economic independence of the United States is shown by the work of the farm waste division of the United States Department of Agriculture, in the production Interesting Tour To Pala Mission Varied and Picturesque Scenery Greets the Traveler One of the most interesting one-day motor trips in Southern California is the one from Los Angeles to Pala Mission. A splendid route thereto is via East Ninth street, Telegraph road, Anaheim, Olive, and thence through scenic Santa Ana canyon with its beautiful sycamores, willows and wild walnuts which provide excellent camping spots. Added to the natural beauty of this canyon are the nearby orchards, rolling hills with waving crops, and brown squares denoting recently harvested areas, and mountain vistas of unusual beauty. Pavement continues through this canyon to Corona, Elsinore, Murrietta and to a short distance south of Homecula, where a splendid gravel road branches to the left and leads nine miles to Pala, through rolling hills and occasional meadows, many of which are covered with field crops cultivated by the Indians. The mission at Pala consists of one low, rambling building, with whitewashed walls and a red-tiled roof, containing side by side the chapel, priest's rooms, storerooms and trader's tienda. The chapel itself is well worth inspection, being a simple rectangle, rooftop with unhewn beams brought down from Palomar mountain, and with rough adobe walls on which have been restored the crude Indian decorations. The floor is still paved with the original square ladrillos, and the present altar was brought here by the Indians when they were exiled from Warner’s ranch in 1903. The statue of the patron Saint Anthony, unmistakably Aztec in feature, is attributed by tradition to Mexican-Indian workmanship. Immediately adjoinning the chapel is the Campo Santo or Indian burial ground, containing many unmarked graves decorated with colored pieces of glass, broken cups, glasses and lamps; while the California poppy blooms among them all, not heeding the former rank or dignity of the occupants of these lonely graves. This burial ground contains the one distinctive architectural feature which Pala possesses—a camouflage described in such notices. Each bid must be made check drawn on a State of California bill less than $50.00, payable Anaheim, the same to the city of Ankeny ten days after the auction to him, the success fail to enter into a waiver with said City to furnish and advertising in co-ops specifications. The City Council of City Manager Edward B. Bender City Clerk 5-17-31 NOTICE INVITING POSALS FOR MOON Notice is hereby given proposals will be received Council of the City Manager office of the City Clerk Thursday afternoon at 14th hour noon. Thursday day, the 14th day after furnishing to salaries truck in accordance with instructionsfor Motor Truck City Manager. City Manager Ada Heimlich NOTICE INVITING POSALS FOR MOON Notice is hereby given proposals will be received Council of the City Manager office of the City Clerk Thursday afternoon at 14th hour noon. Thursday day, the 14th day after furnishing to salaries truck in accordance with instructionsfor Motor Truck City Manager. City Manager Ada Heimlich Many Licenses Revoked by State Four months of warfare on drunken drivers has resulted in the revocation of 108 licenses to drive held by such offenders, the statistics bureau of the Division of Motor Vehicles announces. Records received by the division indicate it was stated that judges throughout the state are becoming aroused over the menace of persons attempting to operate automobiles in an intoxicated condition and are meting out the limit in punishment. The revocation of licenses is considered by the division to be the most effective way of abating the evil, together with straight jail sentences. Of the 194 licenses revoked during the first four months of 1928, approximately 55 per cent were for driving while drunk. The April report contributed 28 to this total. Of these revocations, 16 occurred in the city of Los Angeles. THINGS WORTH KNOWING Q.-Why are the letters "M," "W," and "F" also "S," "O," and "D" placed on United States coins? A.-"M" stands for MacNell, or Morgan; "W" for Weilmann, and "F" for Fraser, all of whom were designers of certain coins. "S," "O," and "D" are mint marks standing for San Francisco, New Orleans, and Denver, respectively. Q.-How does the wheat production outage in white lead manufacture, powder fuel, alkalic acid, pitch, punk, glue, dynamite, absorbent, and many other by-products. Out of corn stalks, Dr. Sweeney has obtained alpha cellulose, bedding for stock, building blocks, cellulose nitrate and acetate, artificial silk, wall board, pyroxylin, lumber substitute, and many chemicals. Of what considerable influence the use of waste has on the economic independence of the United States is shown by the work of the farm waste division of the United States Department of Agriculture, in the production of furfural. Furfural, which is extensively used in the production of synthetic resins, used to cost $30 a pound before 1922, when it was considered a chemical curiosity. Today, thanks to this division, it is produced from farm wastes at the rate of more than a half million pounds a year and is sold for 10 to 17 cents a pound! By producing a mold on corn sugar, the same division has succeeded in obtaining the hitherto rare gluconic acid. That used to cost $100 a pound. Today it is obtainable at a much more reasonable figure. On the strength of Dr. Sweeney's discoveries, three factories have started in Iowa for the production of products from farm wastes. In addition, it is said, Dr. Sweeney has had several offers from eastern capitalists to go to New York and participate in the formation of an organization for the exploitation of farm wastes. IRRIGATED LAND ONLY $250 ACRE Rich, fertile irrigated land in the Historic Feather River Section of Northern California, subdivided into units of ten acres or more. Land noted for its fertility and highly productive qualities; land adapted to orange and avocado culture; land adapted to fruits and diversified farming; land that is producing 12 months out of the year. A more beautiful setting for a rural home cannot be found; lying in the Valley with the Sierra Nevada mountains rising majestically to the east, and the Coast Range to the west; with rivers winding their way through the valley, supplying unlimited water for irrigation; with vast grain fields, orchards and groves in all directions, presenting a picture of peace, health, contentment and prosperity. The early investors made fortunes in Southern California, the same opportunity presents itself here. Immediately adjoining the chapel is the Campo Santo or Indian burial ground, containing many unmarked graves decorated with colored pieces of glass, broken cups, glasses and lamps, while the California poppy blooms among them all, not heeding the former rank or dignity of the occupants of these lonely graves. This burial ground contains the one distinctive architectural feature which Pala possesses—a campanile built in 1816, modeled after the one at Juarez, Mexico, and destroyed by flood waters in 1916, just 100 years later. In the same year it was restored, the original material being used. It has a cobblestone base which supports a super-structure of cement and adobe containing an arched opening in which is swung an old bell. This arch is surmounted by a cross and also by a growing cactus, the seed of which found lodging in the crevices. Roughly hewn steps lead upward to the old bell, and one can easily imagine the hundreds of steps made by sandalled feet of padres in calling to worship and conversion the Agua Caliente Indians of the surrounding reservation. Q.—How does the wheat production of the United States compare with that of Canada, and which states produce the most? A.—Preliminary figures for 1926 show that Kasns, North Dakota, and Oklahoma produce the most wheat in the United States. The United States produces twice as much wheat as Canada. Preliminary figures for 1926 show a production in the United States of 832,305,000 bushels, and in Canada of 405,814,000. Q.—How much of the earth's surface is covered by water and how much by land?
