How to Exterminate The Pocket Gopher
Poisoned Carrot Most Practical Method of Killing Pests
There are many species of pocket gophers, all very similar in form but varying from the size of a large mouse to that of a rat. They are found from the Mississippi river to the Pacific ocean, in all the gulf states, and from Canada to Panama. Their vertical range is from sea level to an altitude of 13,000 feet.
Their annual damage in the United States is estimated at $12,000,000. They kill fruit trees, damage hay fields, and destroy truck crops. Four thousand seven hundred and eighty-five pocket gophers were killed in 80 acres of alfalfa in Orange county while irrigating it in May, 1925.
Pocket gophers are responsible for the destruction of hundreds of citrus and other trees. They are active throughout the winter except in the coldest parts of their range, but rely mainly on food accumulated during the warmer months. They live mostly underground and are nocturnal in their habits and very industrious. The young are born in early spring and average about seven to the littel. When about half grown, the young migrate to unoccupied territory and make homes of their own.
Gophers have large external cheek pouches which are used solely for gathering and transporting food supplies to their burrows. In their tunnels they run backwards and forwards with almost equal facility, the sensitive tail serving as a guide in their backward movements.
Among their natural enemies are snakes and weasels which enter their tunnels, and badgers and coyotes which dig them out. Owls get a great many at night. One pair of barn owls will immediately process into shape to handle, he must come in co-poison. When only a few bait is needed, sufficient used to cover lightly baited runs.
The runways are up inches beneath the ground and can be located of a probe made of thin pipe pointed at one corner the probe down between the open tunnel may couple of baits dropped way, and the probe by the heel. It is well to down gently with the closing the opening, and wise remain wedged if not reach the bottom.
Baits need be placed three points in each of 10 to 30 mounds, within the home of a single goose season for poisoning its ground becomes wet in fore green feed is plentiful.
The above described trol is recommended. States biological survey great favor wherever baits placed fairly in the kill the gopher and this quicker and easier than Gopher poison is mixed by the horticultural care the various counties and of them at actual cost.

One pair of barn owls has been known to catch five pocket gophers, five kangaroo rats and three mice in one night. It is obviously a mistake for the farmer to destroy such friends as these.
Pocket gophers are quite readily caught in any one of the several makes of special traps on the market. For large areas a much more practical method is to poison them by the use of baits of carrots and sweet potatoes placed in the underground runways. The baits should be cut approximately one inch long and one-half inch square and slightly dampened so the poison will adhere to them. Thoroughly mix one-eighth ounce of powdered strychine alkaloid and one-tenth of this quantity of saccharin. From a pepper box lightly smelt this mixture over four quarts of the baits, stirring to distribute the poison evenly.
The reason for cutting the baits the above size and form is that the gopher cannot put such large pieces into his pouch or pocket and carry them to his storeroom, as his custom is, and

will immediately proceed to trim them into shape to handle, in doing which he must come in contact with the poison. When only a small quantity of bait is needed, sufficient poison is used to cover lightly all sides of the baits.
The runways are usually 5 to 10 inches beneath the surface of the ground and can be located by means of a probe made of three-quarter inch pipe pointed at one end. By forcing the probe down between fresh mounds, the open tunnel may be located, a couple of baits dropped into the runway, and the probe hole closed with the heel. It is well to push the bait down gently with the probe before closing the opening, as it may otherwise remain wedged in the hole and not reach the bottom.
Baits need be placed at only two or three points in each separate system of 10 to 30 mounds, which is usually the home of a single gopher. The best season for poisoning is as soon as the ground becomes wet in winter and before green feed is plentiful.
The above described method of control is recommended by the United States biological survey and has found great favor wherever introduced, as baits placed fairly in the runs usually kill the gopher and this method is much quicker and easier than setting a trap.
Gopher poison is mixed and prepared by the horticultural commissioners in various counties and can be secured of them at actual cost of material.

The cost study was conducted by the Agricultural Extension Service, under the supervision of H. E. Wahlberg county farm advisor. Cost data was supplied by seventy-five different growers located in all parts of Orange county, who make up a representative group, or cross-section of the citrus industry. An analysis of each grower's business for 1927 will be given him at this meeting, together with comparative detailed costs from the ten highest producing groves, the ten lowest producing groves, and the average producing grove.
"The economic study gives the grower a definite unit of measurement by which he may compare the efficiency of his own grove with the average." says Farm Advisor Wahlberg.
"The economic phase of citrus growing is becoming more important as competition increases. The forward looking grower is taking this into consideration as much as his cultural problems now."
The farm advisor's presentations of the cost figures will be illustrated with charts made for the occasion. The dinner meeting is scheduled at 6:30 o'clock.

The lives and limbs of Hollywood actresses are too precious to themselves, to their public and to their producers to be lightly risked in the present-day maelstrom of traffic without a flock of insurance. Nearly every person in screenland carries the maximum of insurance.
Hence there was a universal rush by the players to obtain the new Richfield Oil Company's 72-hour auto-travel accident policies when they were first announced. For not only do these policies cost but 1 cent each, but they are collectable for various amounts up to $10,000, regardless of what other life or accident policies the holders already have.
Miss Ethlyne Clair, F. B. O. featured player, and Miss Gladys McConnell, 1927 Baby Star and recently leading woman for Harry Langdon, were two of the first actresses of the world's elmama capital to obtain the Richfield policies.
They secured their first 72-hour protection when starting on a fishing trip into the High Sierras. On their return, they declared the mere knowledge of their protection gave them ease of mind which adhere to their vacation, tention of "carcles every 72 hours."

Southland Wants Member on Board
The vacancy on the board of regents of the University of California will be filled by a farmer-minded man from Southern California, if Governor C. C. Young recognizes the request of California Farm Bureau Federation Region No. 1, as expressed by a resolution passed at their conference in Riverside, Saturday, May 19. The resolution cites the fact that agriculturists are largely dependent upon the university for their intellectual advancements and expressed the belief that these needs would be better served by a regent who understood agricultural problems. Neither the resolution nor the conference suggested any person for the appointment, but as the vacancy occurred by the resignation of a Southern California, some appointee from the South would be generally approved.
Another action of the conference was to appoint a committee to work out an adaptation of the federal hay grades to South conditions. The operate with a gesturing hand at the horton service. As his large commodities financial staples are not this committed Action was forcement of laws under the
