A. C. of C. Endorses Boulder Dam Bill
Telegrams Sent Senators Urge Speedy Action on Measure
After listening to a speech by S. C. Evans of Riverside, whose subject was the Boulder dam, the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Orange county, at the monthly meeting held at La Habra, Thursday evening, passed a resolution endorsing the Swing-Johnson bill and urging the Senate to pass it without unnecessary delay. On the following day copies of the resolution were sent by wire to Senators Johnson and Shortridge of California, and Senator Snell, chairman of the appropriations committee.
Be it resolved that the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Orange County hereby go on record in support of Boulder dam legislation now before congress known as the Swing-Johnson bill, as it is essential not only to economic progress of entire Southwest, but also to save lives and property.
Further be it resolved that we give every support to those who are working for this great and necessary project and hope that the said legislation is passed and placed in effect without delay.
Be it further resolved that we express the hope that the rules of the Unite dStates Senate be not used to deny the passage of this efficacious measure so urgently needed.
The resolution is signed by H. H. Hale, president of the organization, and George Macleod, secretary.
A reel of motion pictures was shown of the dam location and of past devastations as a result of floods in the affected areas.
George Kollogg of Yorba Linda made a short talk in which he stressed the importance of the windbreaks for Orange county in the citrus areas. He mentioned the action of Villa Park in preparing to submit to the legislature
Survey for Cause Of Orange Drop
Horticultural Commission Finds Worm Largely Responsible
During the past season the orange worms, Tortrix citrana and Holococera feeryaeella, have caused considerable concern and much loss due to fruit injury and the resultant dropping. This drop starts with the first warm weather and continues more or less regularly until the crop is harvested. In addition to the ripe fruit drop there is an extensive drop of immature fruit which is less noticeable to the average grower.
Of the two worms the Tortrix seems to have been of more consequence than the Holococera, possibly because the Tortrix continues to damage the fruit throughout the season, although it decreases considerably at times, due to heavy parasitism. The Holococera is not affected by similar parasitism, but the larvae of this moth damages the fruit mainly during the spring and summer, thereby giving entry to various fungi and ultimately causing the fruit to drop.
The unfortunate part about this fruit drop is that the result, in most cases, follows the cause by a period of from a few weeks to several months, so that the damage, at least to ripe fruit, is often done long before the drop occurs. For instance, at the present time injury may be found in clusters or where two fruits are touching, one or more fruits having been punctured some months back by a Tortrix larvae. Thus while in reality the infestation of Tortrix is at present decreased to a very low ebb, considerable fruit will drop from this previous injury. The summer brood of Tortrix larvae usually appears in June and the amount of injury from this brood will depend, of course, upon the effectiveness of the control by mutual enemies now present. Holococera larvae are now largely full grown or pupating and the progeny from this brood of moths may be ex-

George Kellogg of Yorba Linda made a short talk in which he stressed the importance of the windbreaks for Orange county in the citrus areas. He mentioned the action of Villa Park in preparing to submit to the legislature a bill in which windbreak districts could be formed similar to other district forms. He stated that many groves suffered 25 per cent fruit and tree damage as a result of the last wind. If such a windbreak district could be formed according to plans adopted by Villa Park district, the district would be assessed according to the cost and maintenance of the windbreaks. Kellogg stated that the assessment would be small compared to the result that would be obtained.

Percent means the percent of drop and not the total damage due to orange worms or any other of the above factors. The total damage must take into consideration the fruit on the trees at final picking time.as a portion of this is damaged but has not fallen yet.The there were wormy fruits in the trees at picking time.
In view of the fact that no adequate treatment for control of these pests has been found.it is advisable to separate all touching fruits during the May or June picking.lt is in these clusters that a large percentage of the damage occurs. In if June inspection shows a comparatively severe infestation of young Torrix larvae.it may be advisable to remove the entire crop rather than to suffer severe loss from worm damage. Its also to be noted that the presence of considerable numbers of Holococera larvae in the early spring does not bear any direct relationship to the degree of infestation of Torrix. The damage already accomplished by the latter or the possibility of damage from the summer brood must be considered as a separate problem.

Officer Gets Medal For Act of Bravery.
For the first time in the history of the state traffic department of the Division of Motor Vehicles, a medal has been awarded to a state traffic officer for a conspicuous act of bravery.
The award was made to Thornton Edwards, Ventura county officer, who on the night of March 13th, after his one home had been washed away, rode his motorcycle down the San Francisco canyon to warn residents of the ill-fated district that the waters, loosed by the collapse of St. Francis dam, were sweeping down upon them.
Like a modern Paul Revere, Edwards rode from home to home, rousing the sleepers and urging them to escape before the 60-foot wall of water arrived. His own family had escaped to the hills.
The incident was brought to the attention of Frank G. Snook, chief of the division; who immediately ordered the preparation of a medal commemorating the event.
Snook announced the award would mark the innovation of a new policy by the division whereby acts of officers of an unusually meritorious nature will be suitably recognized in the future.
Handbills have been distributed in parts of Nicaragua calling on the public to kill all Americans. This is a little hard on our "liberals" who are supporting Sandino. But maybe the handbills don't classify them as Americans.

Outdoor Drama Drawing Larger Crowds Than Ever Before
With every indication that the total attendance will far outstrip all previous annual presentations, the sixth annual showing of the Ramona pageant at Hemet will eqnue to an end with performances of next Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6.
From the advance reservations, a complete sell out of the Ramona bowl for the last two presentations is anticipated, and the general committee urges those who plan to attend the pageant to make early reservations to avoid the necessity of viewing the colorful play from vantage points on the canyon wall adjacent to the amphitheatre, although in earlier days thousands saw the pageant in this manner.
Lavish praises have been accorded the presentation this year, among the celebrities of the world of music and production who have expressed themselves enthusiastically over the outdoor drama being Carrie Jacobs Bond, noted composed, and Mrs. J. J. Carter, sponsor of Hollywood bowl productions.
With Dorise Schukow in the title role, and Victor Jory, as her ill-fated Indian lover, both of whom have scored in previous years in the parts, the principals of the drama this year have achieved a notable presentation under the direction of Garnet Holme, pageant master of the United States National Parks Service, who adapted the drama and has directed it since its inception, according to reviewers.
Saturday night, May 5, Harold W. Hyland post of the American Legion of Hemet will sponsor the third of the series of dances at which the principals of the cast are guests of honor and in which many of the pageant visitors

Wage Comparison In Various Lands
A comparison of "real wages" in various large cities of the world has been made by the international labor office. These results are shown in index numbers, using London as the base, or 100. The American example is Philadelphia. It shows America as having the highest real wage level, with an index number of 178.
These disclose the wisdom of the Immigration Quota Act. This, in severely excluding Mediterranean and East Europeans, saves American living standards from their keenest competition. The "real wages" of Nordic Europe approach most nearly the American standards. With the United States at 178, and Canada at 156, Denmark's actual wage index is 106, England 100, Sweden 92, Holland 87. Milan's index figure is 52, less than one-third Philadelphia's. Other cities in the area fro m which immigration is severely restricted make even a poorer showing. Riga is 48, Prague 46, Rome 43, Vienna 41, Warsaw 37. Lisbon gives the worst record. 31. Six men in Portugal earn just about one man's actual wage in Philadelphia.
participate. Sunday, May 6. will be "Norwalk Day," with a large number of residents of that city coming by motor bus and private car excursion.
