A. C. of C. Discusses Important Projects Bailey’s Monthly Flood Control Report to Be Distributed Following declarations by H. E. Wahlberg, county farm advisor, that the monthly reports made by Paul Bailey, flood control engineer, were of such importance as to warrant study by everyone, the Associated Chambers of Commerce of Orange County, in session at Huntington Beach, recommended that the board of supervisors authorize the printing of enough copies to send one each to the accredited delegates to the county body. Wahlberg asserted his belief that the reports should be read and digested by directors of chambers of commerce, and that they should be permanently maintained in the files of the organizations. Reporting for the aviation committee, Frank Mason, of Brea, declared that aviation has arrived and appealed for co-operative action in the location and development of a good airport. F. W. Slabaugh, chairman of the advertising committee, stated that the Motor Transit tours through Orange county had become so popular that they had become daily affairs. He pointed out that the tour was started approximately a year ago with two runs a week, later being increased to three and now scheduled for every day. He said that literature advertising the tour had been placed in more than 400 hotels, apartment houses and information bureau in Los Angeles. The situation concerning the proposed direct road from Fullerton to Costa Mesa and Newport Beach was presented by different men interested in the project. It was pointed out that the road involves the construction of a bridge across the Santa Ana river, and Ralph McFadden, of Placentia, wanted to know if the chambers wanted to get back of a bond issue that would be necessary to build the bridge. There was no response to his query. J. P. Greeley, of Newport Beach, president of the chambers, directed attention to the necessity of a viaduct at the intersection of the coast highway and Newport Beach boulevard, and suggested SUPERVISORS’ PROCEEDINGS An order relative to selecting a jury panel for the superior court was regularly adopted. Hearing in the matter of County Improvement No. 13 was continued until 2 P. M. State aid was ordered granted to Grace House Jackson. The chairman and clerk were authorized to sign the agreement with the Southern Pacific Company for a 14-inch storm drain under right-of-way at Wintersburg. It was ordered that the bid of Fred C. Baier, Inc., for pipe and installation for the job at the county hospital be accepted. The application of Motaluke Noguchio for renewal of pool room license was granted. Fumigating licenses were ordered issued to Claude Coffman, Lew Roberts, and A. E. Sharland. Hearing of the petition to change name of Bay City School District to Seal Beach School District was set for February 14, 1928, at 11 a.m. Petition for incorporation of San Clemente was presented and filed. Election set for February 21, 1928. The application of H. Penhall for renewal of pool room license was granted. A resolution relative to Holy Jim canyon was regularly adopted. It was ordered that the 1925 La Habra sanitary sales Nos. 15 and 16 be cancelled. It was ordered that the sum of $40 assessed on personal property in the name of Loletta Smith was ordered cancelled. Further hearing on County Improvement No. 13 was continued to January 31, 1928, at 10 a.m. The county auditor was directed to draw a warrant on the county general fund for $718.52 in favor of J. C. Joplin, treasurer, being in payment of bonds Nos. 402, 408, 405, and 407, Garden Grove sanitary district. U.S.C. Baseball Will Play Gainsborough Heath Subdivision Opens Lots in Beautiful Tract in San Marino on Market Today Nowhere in the world can there be found such a distinguished setting for an exclusive residential community as exists at Gainsborough Heath, in San Marino, which will be formally opened for sale about February 15, according to announcement by J. B. Ransom, president of the J. B. Ransom Corporation, who are developing this property. "The attention," declared Ransom, "of the world of art and letters is focussed today upon San Marino, for here is located the internationally famous Huntington library and art gallery, which has just been opened up to the public for the first time in history. In this great $30,000,000 collection of the masterpieces of world famous literary geniuses and artists, are many priceless treasures, among the most notable being Gainsborough's Blueboy, coveted by all the great art galleries of the world, and now permanently in the Huntington collection. "Within less than half a mile of the magnificent Huntington estate lies Gainsborough Heath, which appropriately takes its picturesque name from the great English painter, and from its striking rtssemblance to beautiful Gainsborough Lane in England. The Gainsborough motif has been carried out throughout in the improvements and signboards on the property, the latter depicting various scenes typical of the Gainsborough period. These represent some of the most elaborate boards ever installed on a residential subdivision. "The smart San Gabriel Country Club borders Gainsborough Heath on the south, and with the superb private estates in San Marino, this new property is already established in an environment of culture. With the increasing interest in art and letters in America, and the vast Huntington collection for reference, San Marino is become the mecca of artists Coffee Experiments In Imperial Valley California, self-sustaining in so far as fruits, vegetables, meats and most other table necessities are concerned, may round out a complete menu with the addition of home grown coffee and teas, if enthusiastic experimenters with these crops are to be believed. Coffee is now being grown in an experimental way and, its sponsors say, with promise of success, in the Imperial valley, and transplanted East Indian and Ceylon tea plants are being given a trial at at least two spots in the Southland. Charles B. Hazelhurst, Los Angeles attorney, is experimenting with tea, and says he is convinced it will be only a question of time until Southland home owners will be stepping out in their back yards, or front yards, as the case may be, and plucking fresh tea leaves of their own growing—Ceylon, Orange-pekoe, green or black tea, as their individual tastes dictate. On Mr. Hazelhurst's home grounds, at 927 Garfield avenue, Pasadena, several tea plants are growing thriftily, and a number of them are growing as well at his summer home at Laguna Beach. The experimenter says that investigation showed him that tea is grown successfully in the tropics, the sub-tropics and quite often on mountainsides which experience snowfall and freezing temperatures. In an effort to ascertain whether the plant will "do its stuff" in California, he recently obtained thirty bushes for planting on his places. The plants, according to Mr. Hazelhurst, are showing excellent growth and, although they have been out but a short time, give every indication of thriving in this climate. "Before starting my experiment," he says. "I took up the question of tea culture in California with United States Department of Agriculture experts, who advised me that the climate of Southern California should suit the plant very well. Tea thrives in subtropical countries, and is not injured by cold unless the thermometer falls below twenty degrees above zero. If colder weather threatens, the plants must be protected." My investigations disclosed that a loamy or clay soil is preferable, although a sandy soil may serve if plenty of organic matter is incorporated in the soil. A soil that will not retain water is unsuitable for the tea plant. The bushes should have at least fifty inches of water during the year, and two-thirds of this amount is needed during the picking season—from April until November 13 was continued to January 31, 1928, at 10 a.m. The county auditor was directed to draw a warrant on the county general fund for $718.52 in favor of J. C. Joplin, treasurer, being in payment of bonds Nos. 402, 408, 405, and 407; Garden Grove sanitary district. With the increasing interest in art and letters in America, and the vast Huntington collection for reference, San Marino is destined to become the mecca of artists and writers, not to mention scientists, drawn here by the high scholarship standards and exhaustive research work of the California Institute of Technology, within about a mile of Gainsborough Heath. "A feature of great interest is the palatial Bradbury Home in an attractive section of this 297-acre estate. It is of pure Spanish colonial design, with broad arched verandas, and one of the very few modern houses actually constructed with adobe brick, as the old padres built their missions. On the opening day at Gainsborough Heath, tiffin will be served to all visitors to the property." The new Boots and Saddle Club of Gainsborough Heath is another attraction of especial interest. The wooded lanes and bridle paths of this section afford splendid opportunity for horse-lovers at Gainsborough Heath to enjoy this wholesome recreation. The city of San Marino has enjoyed a unique distinction among all Southern California communities, in that up to recently all business enterprises were restricted to a single structure in the center of the city. This is a handsome Spanish building with gleaming white stucco walls and rich red tile roof, which houses the San Marino city hall and fire department, as well as markets and other absolute necessities of the community. Now, however, other business buildings are to be permitted on Huntington drive, the principal thoroughfare of San Marino, offering wonderful investment opportunities for early buyers, according to Ransom. California should suit the plant very well. Tea thrives in subtropical countries, and is not injured by cold unless the thermometer falls below twenty degrees above zero. If colder weather threatens, the plants must be protected. A soil that will not retain water is unsuitable for the tea plant. The bushes should have at least fifty inches of water during the year, and two-thirds of this amount is needed during the pickling season—from April until November. Only the new growth should be picked, and these leaves about every fifteen days. The upper three or four leaves only are used for choicest tea. Twenty good bushes should yield tea enough to last the average family a year. "The process of curing tea leaves is not difficult. Those who desire Pekoe, must pick but the two tiny top leaves, which make the new growth. These are bouqueted with orange or jasmine blossoms to make Orange-pekoe or Jasmine-pekoe. For other really choice varieties of tea, no more should be plucked than the next three or four leaves, as those further down the stem give a product of an inferior quality, which I have found, is the sort chiefly imported and used in the United States. "The interesting feature in tea culture is that all varieties of tea are produced from the same plant, or bush, the variety depending entirely on the processing, which is an interesting study in itself."
