Sec. Hoover Declares Business Prospering Optimistic Forecast Relative to Year Just Ushered In An answer to the usual annual request of the press for a statement of prospects requires a short catalogue of the economic forces which dominate the business situation at our entry into the New Year. The more general of these forces of course, include the credit situation, the degree of accumulated stocks of goods or speculation in them, the size of the crops, the rate of wages, the outlook in labor relations and employment, the prospects of foreign trade and to these also need be added the particular forces in motion in the different major industries. Upon these points it may be said that there is an ample supply of credits at low rates; the somewhat larger stock of goods which were accumulated during the summer are being reduced; there is no consequential speculation in commodities; the crops have been abundant; wages are at a high level; we are recovering from some partial unemployment, especially in the automobile industry. There is peace in most sections of the labor world except bituminous coal; there is more peace in the international world than at any time since the war; the foreign world is recovering its economic strength and buying power, therefore, our foreign trade is steadily increasing. The phenomena usually accredited as premonitory of a slump are therefore absent. During the past year there have been important shifts in our own economic world which have an important bearing upon the future. While the average wholesale price of all commodities at about 50 per cent above prewar is today the same as a year ago, yet if we divide them into agricultural and non-agricultural goods, it will be found that the average price of non-agricultural products has fallen in the 12 months from about 60 per cent above prewar to 51 per cent prewar. The average of agricultural products Poultry Parasites Reduce Egg Yield Poultry parasites are of many kinds. Sometimes they multiply until they kill the fowls on which they prey. But in the opinion of entomologists of the United States department of agriculture parasites do even greater injury to the industry by reducing the vitality, stunting the growth, and checking the egg yield of fowls. Lice and mites are the most frequent and wide spread groups of external parasites, and these two require entirely different methods of treatment to rid the fowls of their attacks, because the two live under different conditions. The lice exist on the fowls, and the mites live in cracks and crevices in nests and roosts. For eradicating lice the department of agriculture recommends application of sodium flouride. It kills all varieties of lice—body, head, and feather. This chemical may be applied by dusting or by dipping. Either the "chemically pure" or "commercial" grades may be used, but the latter is cheaper and more easily obtained. Young chicks require very little, and a pound of powder, costing about 35 cents, should kill the lice on a flock of 100 chickens. Dipping the fowls is still easier and cheaper, but it is not wise to dip fowls unless the weather is warm. A single treatment of every fowl, by either the dusting or dipping method, will completely eradicate all lice from the premises. For mites the procedure is utterly different. Mites do not live on the fowls by day, but come out and suck their fill of blood when the fowls are roosting. First the poultry house must be cleaned thoroughly. Trash, nesting material, etc., should be taken out and burned. Then go over the whole house thoroughly with crude petroleum or carbolineum, using either a spray pump or brush to apply the material. Petroleum is cheaper, but the carbolineum gets into the cracks better and lasts longer. Paint the roosts and let the petroleum or carbolineum work into every crack. The mite-killer should dry before the chickens go to roost. There are other fowl parasites, such as the scaly leg mites, blue bugs, bedbugs, fleas, and chiggers, each of which may cause much loss; these pests, however, are not so generally distributed... usually accredited as premonitory of a slump are therefore absent. The average of agricultural products at central markets has risen from about 53 per cent above prewar; however, prices on the farm show only a rise of from about 30 per cent above to about 39 per cent above prewar. Manufacture and distribution have by savings and diminished profits accommodated themselves to this situation of decreasing prices without reduction in the average level of wages and therefore in the national buying power. But the great extent to which industry has accommodated itself to lower prices by decreased costs makes for a sounder condition for the ensuing year. Despite decreasing prices, production and consumption of manufactured commodities have been maintained upon a high level, as shown by car-loadings of class of goods, which have been about equal to those of last year. As to particular industries, agriculture, textiles, bituminous coal and some metals—still lag behind the others. The contracts let for future execution in the construction industries are at as high a level as at this time a year ago. Taken in a broad sense, we enter the New Year with the forces of stability dominant in the business world. SUPERVISORS' PROCEEDINGS A quit claim deed from William Mitchell, Ira Mitchell and David M. Mitchell, Jr., to the county of Orange was accepted and ordered placed on record. A quit claim deed from Jack Golden and Anna M. Golden, his wife, to the county of Orange was accepted and ordered placed on record. A quit claim deed from The Southern County Bank, a corporation, to the county of Orange, was accepted and ordered placed on record. It was ordered that the sum of $180 assessed on improvements in the name of Mary E. Tilden be cancelled. A fumigating license was ordered issued to H. Case. The county surveyor was instructed to prepare plans and specifications in the matter of the formation of Westminster Lighting District, etc. The application of Jacob Nommels for renewal of pool room license was granted. Map tract No. 888 was accepted by the board and the same referred to the city engineer of the city of Laguna Beach. Map tract No. 877 was accepted as the official plotting of said tract. Walnut Acreage on Increase in State Seven thousand new acres of walnuts have been planted each year in California during the past six years, according to authoritative reports from the various sections of the state where the industry is being expanded. Based on a conservative average production of 1000 pounds per acre, the present acreage, if not another tree is planted, will yield about 120,000,000 pounds of nuts when it reaches maturity. This amount is just 50 per cent greater than the present total consumption of walnuts in the United States, including the foreign as well as domestic supply. The future outlook emphasizes the need for a program of economic production costs on the part of the grower. The grower who can produce quality walnuts at the least cost is the one who will be able to meet growing competition with accompanying market fluctuations. To this end the extension service is arranging a walnut growers' short course to be held at the Tustin grammar school auditorium, January 18, 20, and 21. The lectures by authorities on the walnut industry will embrace field and cultural problems and the economic status of the crop. All walnut growers of Orange county are invited to attend. There are no fees. Bean Acreage Now Is Large Enough "The present production of beans is adequate for national consumption at the present level of prices. There seems to be, therefore, no justification for an increase in bean acreage." So H. R. Wellman and E. W. Braun of the Agricultural Extension Service, University of California, sum up the situation in California, in bulletin No. 444 of the college of agriculture. This publication is one of the series on "California Crops and Prices," and may be obtained free from the college of agriculture at Berkeley or Davis, or from the farm advisor's office, Hall of Records, Santa Ana. Map tract No. 888 was accepted by the board and the same referred to the city engineer of the city of Laguna Beach. Map tract No. 877 was accepted as the official plotting of said tract. Resolution and order of election in the matter of proposed Midway City Lighting District, fixing January 26, 1928, as date of election, was regularly adopted. It was ordered that the pool room license of Harry Quigle be transferred to Bert Berg. The application of Gumesindo Chaires for renewal of pool room license was granted. The application of V. Morales for renewal of pool room license was granted. The contract for the widening of Ocean avenue and Los Alamitos boulevard, and the repaving of Bay City road was accepted as completed by B. W. Hicks, contractor. A resolution of the board of supervisors of the County of Orange, State of California, declaring its intention to construct curbs and sidewalks on portions of Catalina street, Florista street, Alvarado street, Walnut street, Chestnut street, Myrtle street, Pine street, Main street, and Cherry street, all in the town of Los Alamitos, in the matter of County Improvement No. 13, was regularly adopted. January 24, 1928, at 11 a.m., was the time fixed for hearing of objections. Further action in the matter of the revocation of fumigating licenses of William Marshall and A. R. MacBeth was continued to January 3, 1927, at 2 p.m. The old-fashioned boy of eight who believed in Santa Claus has grown up and now has a son of the same age who can tell you Babe Ruth's batting average and who knows he could fly almost as well as Lindy if he had the chance. So H. "Bean growing is a speculative business," says the agricultural extension specialists. Prices of each variety fluctuate widely from year to year. The direction and extent of these price fluctuations cannot be forecast accurately at the time of planting. Over a period of years, however, a consistent relationship tends to be maintained between the average prices of the different varieties. These probable average prices, coupled with the known yields that growers can obtain under their particular conditions, will give them an indication of the variety that will be profitable on their lands. Such a forecast mya not prove correct for any given year, but for a series of years the bean growers who are permanently in the business will find it profitable to make such calculations. Further developments may cause permanent changes in the trends of bean prices given in this bulletin, but these are not yet apparent from the facts we have been able to gather. Certainly, however, any radical increase in bean acreage here or elsewhere is likely to be felt by California bean growers." This new bulletin is of great interest to many farmers of Orange county, especially bean growers, and an attempt is being made to have a copy mailed to every bean grower in the county. If there is any bean grower, or any other interested party, who does not receive a copy of the publication in the near future, one will be supplied by the local farm advisor's office upon request. Will Rogers says that Mexico is a comparatively quiet and safe place, but you will notice that he didn't announce himself as a candidate for president while south of the Rio Grande. ANAHEIM GAZETTE Farmers to Banquet At Fair Grounds Over a hundred leading farmers from all over Orange county will gather at the fair grounds Friday night as banquet guests of the Orange County Farm Bureau. Special arrangements are being made for the meeting. A committee of fair officials have draped off a part of the big dining room and installed heaters so the room will be warm and cozy. Members of the Orange Woman's Civic Club have been engaged to furnish the banquet, and entertainers from Murphy's Comedians will dispense cheer during the meal. This demonstration initiates the annual membership campaign of the farm bureau. At the present time Orange county is said to have the second strongest farm bureau in the United States. It is the ambition of the local organization to push the reputation up to first place. Prominent speakers will discuss state and national farm issues during the program following the dinner.
