Prosperous Year For Electric Firm Southern California Edison Co. Far Surpasses 1926 in Receipts When the records for the full twelve months of the year are compiled, the Southern California Edison Company, the world's third largest hydro-electric company, will hang up fresh records in virtually all departments of its business. Eleven months' figures, including the earnings, show that the company, in most of its activities has already lifted itself above the 1926 records. Probably no better evidence can be adduced to demonstrate the prosperity of the territory the Edison company serves. As a public utility distributing a necessary commodity for household, commercial, industrial and agricultural consumption, this company, through its operations, directly reflects whatever changes occur in the economic status of Southern California. Consumers, representing the demand from all classes of electric service, purchased a total of 1,744,783,037 kilowatt hours in the first eleven months of the year. This is a new high record in sales in the history of the company, and is an increase of 124,831,320 kilowatt hours over the same period of last year, or 8 per cent. In new business signed, the total horsepower for the eleven months is already in excess of the amount added in the twelve months of 1926. New business contracts, as of November 30, last, amount to 198,332 horsepower, compared with 176,786 for all of 1926. The company estimates that 1927 will show a total of about 210,444 horsepower in new business. Since January 1 the Edison system has added a total of 22,501 new retail customers. As of November 30, the total stood at 377,666. Particular emphasis is placed on the sales of appliances because of the campaign undertaken by the management to increase the use of electricity in the homes. In the first eleven months a total of 2925 electric ranges was sold; Interesting Talks At Growers' Meeting The meeting of pepper growers held at Talbert last Friday brought out some very interesting data, which every grower should remember in lining up his winter plowing. R. E. Campbell, entomologist of the United States Department of Agriculture, reported that in some of the late fields where inspection had been made, as high as five weevil per plant had been found, and he brought out the fact that if that were true for all plants in the county, and all of these weevil lived through the winter, a neat little infestation of 150,000,000 would result to start off next season. However, this assumption is rather far fetched, but even a small percentage of the above number would cause untold damage to the 1928 crop. Consequently, Mr. Campbell urged everyone to plow under their old pepper fields as early as possible, so as to destroy not only a large number of the insects, but their food supply as well. Simply disking the ground will not accomplish all that is intended, as the insects must be prevented from emerging by deep plowing. It has also been found that many of the late fields contain a large number of green pods in which are the immature stages of the weevil. If these plants are left, the weevil will emerge while deep plowing will destroy the insects and consequently cut down the over-wintering colony. Wet, rainy weather, such as we have had this fall, seems to favor the over-wintering insects, as it causes a dense foliage at the bases of the old pepper plants, where the weevil may congregate and live through the winter months. A deep, thorough plowing cannot be urged too strongly at this time. In order to further urge this campaign of clean-up of old fields, another growers' meeting will be held at the Japanese school at Talbert, this evening, at 7:30 o'clock. All growers are invited to attend. Bureau to Foster Radio The regular Fridays of the Farm Bureau natural Extension Seek KWTO will be extended length during the month according to present season the program by different farm centers having charge of on-tainment. These probably consist of short local community musical numbers. Rabbits can be cooed ways chickens are kept to their degree of teacup. Since January 1 the Edison system has added a total of 22,501 new retail customers. As of November 30, the total stood at 377,666. Particular emphasis is placed on the sales of appliances because of the campaign undertaken by the management to increase the use of electricity in the homes. In the first eleven months a total of 2925 electric ranges was sold; 1092 water heaters, and 749 refrigerators. Partial-payment contracts are financed by the Southwestern Acceptance Corporation. As an indication of the effect of appliance sales on the demand for energy, the records show that the connected load for electric ranges increased 28,758 horsepower since January 1, or 30 per cent. The total connected load for ranges now runs around 127,955 horsepower. Further testimony of business health is glimpsed through the growth in the demand for power intended for industrial consumption. The connected load for this type of service increased 17 per cent in the first eleven months to a total of 405,302 horsepower. In number of stockholders, the Edison company has scored another record that stands out as a national accomplishment. With more than 110,000 stockholders, this company ranks third among the operating companies in the country, and first among the power and light companies. Total assets are now about $306,000,000, reflecting the growth in property investment resulting from the development program under way in the high Sierra. Rules for Driving In Wet Weather Dangers in driving increase during the winter wet weather season, it is pointed out. To partly offset the rain hazards, the emergency road service department of the automobile club recently compiled a few timely suggestions to motorists. It is suggested that autoists make sure without delay that the brakes on their cars are equalized in order to be safe during future rains. While four-wheel brakes reduce the hazards of skidding when they are equalized, if they are not, the danger is great. It is also wise to stop the car gradually when approaching intersections on wet pavement and to let the compression do most of the work. One important precaution that is sadly neglected by many drivers during rainy weather is that of keeping the windshield clean. Clear vision is essential in avoiding accidents and autoists should keep their windshield wipers working when driving in rain. Do not follow other cars too closely, the automobile club also advises, for a fine violation in this way. Bureau Sponsors Romantic Picture "The Romance of Sleepy Valley," a six-reel basic drama typical of American life, will be shown several places in Orange county during January, through the courtesy of the local theatres. This picture depicts the romance of agriculture, the foundation industry of the world, in a pleasing and entertaining manner. The hardships, heartaches and hopes of a typically rural community are worked out on the screen and the application of modern methods brings about a happy ending. Interwoven in the plot is the simple but sincere love affair of a rural mald. How closely our environs affect our lives is illustrated in the drama by the portrayal of this romance. The picture was arranged by specialists of the American Farm Bureau Federation and is highly educational. It is an epic dramatizing modern progress and improvement. Many things regarding late inventions may be learned by viewing the picture. Seventeen nai in making the picture, and over 60 nationally known corporations co-operated individual characters were employed. The United States government lent its assistance by blocking off traffic at Washington, D.C., while a part of the picture was taken. The picture will be shown at Garden Grove, January 4; Buena Park; January 6; Placentia; January 10; and Yorba Linda; January 12. Experts to Speak at Walnut Short Course January 19, 20 and 21 have been definitely set for the walnut growers' short course to be held at Tustin grammar school, under the auspices of the Agricultural Extension Course. The first dates, announced some time ago, have been changed to meet the schedule of the speakers. The farm bureau walnut growers' department has succeeded in getting the university to cancel the customary fees for such courses and make the lectures free to all growers and others interested. This will be the only course given in this part of Southern California. One will be held at Ventura. The first day of lectures will cover subjects pertaining to the trend of the walnut industry and problems of soil management. The second day will be devoted to tree problems, and the third day to crop problems—harvesting where weevil may congregate and live through the winter months. A deep, thorough plowing cannot be urged too strongly at this time. In order to further urge this campaign of clean-up of old fields, another growers' meeting will be held at the Japanese school at Talbert, this evening, at 7:30 o'clock. All growers are invited to attend. NOTICE OF A SECTION TWO W LOCATION OF P OF BUSINESS. FORNIA. Orange County Co given to secure two one for the sum October 22, 1926, at the rate of seven One important precaution that is sadly neglected by many drivers during rainy weather is that of keeping the windshield clean. Clear vision is essential in avoiding accidents and autoists should keep their windshield wipers working when driving in rain. Do not follow other cars too closely, the automobile club also advises, for a fine spray of mud is thrown in this way from the tires, spotting the hood and windshield in quick order. Driving slowly through puddles is another good rule, says the club. Muddy water is splashed on the car by fast driving through them and often the machine is stalled because water reaches the distributor. It is well to put a "raincoat" of an old inner tubing over the distributor for the rainy season. The tubing can be tied at the top so that whatever spray comes in through the radiator will not wet the ignition. Tire chains are advisable for wet weather, and are absolutely necessary for driving on wet mountain roads. Chains keep the machine from skidding if rather quick stops have to be made. On dirt and gravel roads the chains help the traction during wet weather. They are also very helpful in driving snow and ice-covered roads in the mountains, it is pointed out. Center Officers Elected by Mail The mail election of officers conducted by the El Modena Farm Center was concluded last week. Forty percent of the members voted, a percentage comparable to our regular state elections, so the mail election is considered a success. A poll off he votes cast shows W. N. Cummings elected president by a small margin over L. W. Evans, who was a close second. E. E. Campbell became director by a majority vote, closely followed by George Seba, and S. V. McPherson was re-elected secretary. Beekeepers Elect Officers for Year The annual fall meeting of the beekeepers department of the Orange County Farm Bureau was held at the farm bureau office December 18. Reviews and interpretations of the recent bee laws enacted by the last legislature were given by C. A. Wurth, bee inspector of Riverside county, and Henry Perkins, bee inspector of Los Angeles county. Farm Advisor H. E. Wahlberg reported on the honey production cost studies now under way in co-operation with local beekeepers. The election of new officers for the coming year resulted in placing P. L. Crump, Santa Ana, president; G. Twombly, Fullerton, vice-president; C. E. Lush, Orange, secretary, and Roy K. Bishop, Orange, director to the Orange County Farm Bureau. Mr. Bishop, the retiring president of the department, had held the office five years. He was appointed bee inspector for Orange county last August by the horticultural commission, under which the new law places apiary inspection.
