California Women Are Milk Consumers Use 10 Per Cent More Than the Average for Nation One secret of the beauty and charm achieved by California women has been disclosed by no less a personage than Dr. Herman M. Bundesen, president of the American Public Health Association. "Make milk the bacgbone of your diet, eat one or two vegetables and you will have red cheeks and bright eyes," said Dr. Bundesen. And California's women use more milk—10 per cent more—than is the average for the nation. "Of whole milk alone, the average California woman consumes twenty-two gallons a year in addition to quantities of malted and concentrated milk. She of butter; nibbles seven pounds of spreads on her bread twenty-two pounds cheese, besides the cottage cheese that adorns her pineapple salad, and tucks away two and one-half gallons of ice cream," said Sam H. Greene, secretary of the California Dairy Council. "The these quantities are 10 per cent more than the average for the nation, and if Dr. Bundesen's rule of milk and health and beauty holds true (and my observation tells me that it does), the California woman in her wisdom has taken to herself a mathematical advantage of 10 per cent over the others. The figures (of percentage) disclose this. "Robert Louis Stevenson, Rudyard Kipling, and other great writers, poets and world travelers have sounded the praises far and wide of the feminine beauty found within this state. They did not try to explain it; just accepted it as a happy fact. "After literature had failed to offer suitable explanation, now comes Dr. Bundesen, the man of science, and with the directness of the scientific mind, lays down a rule which permits us to work out the whole thing by mathematics." Spafford, national commander of the American Legion, will arrive in California on Friday for a tour of the state. This is the first official visit of the Legion's head to California. Governor Young will greet National Commander Spafford at Sacramento, and following a breakfast there, the visitor will proceed to Oakland, where he will make a luncheon address at the Hotel-Oakland. He will also visit the United States Veterans' hospital at Livermore on Friday, as well at Letterman General hospital, San Francisco. In the evening he will be the guest at a banquet given by C. C. Thomas navy post of the American Legion at the Bellevue hotel, San Francisco. Saturday, Commander Spafford will have a long schedule ahead of him with train speeches at Fresno, Fowler, Selma, Kingsburg, Visalia, Exeter, Lindsay, and Porterville, with a lunch-on meeting at Bakersfield and, late in the afternoon, a visit to the United States Veterans' hospital at San Fernando. The Los Angeles World War veterans, through the county council of the American Legion, will give a dinner Saturday night for the visitor at Los Angeles. On Sunday, Spafford will attend various functions and will be present at the meeting of the state executive committee of the Legion at Pasadena. Dedication of a veterans' memorial building at Alhambra and a banquet at South Pasadena, the home of State Commander Phil Dodson of the California legionnaires, will conclude the day. Monday, the commander will be a guest at the Pasadena Tournament of Roses and the Stanford-Pittsburgh football game. He will leave for Arizona to continue on his tour late Monday. State Commander Dodson, State Adjutant James K. Fisk and other Legion heads will accompany Commander Spafford on his tour. Last official warning from State Adjutant James K. Fisk of the American Legion has gone forth to the World war veterans of California that December 31, 1927, is the final day upon which veterans may apply for the bonus or adjusted compensation cer- Pays $300 Fine for Polluting Water Upholding the contention of the division of fish and game of the department of natural resources in its fight to suppress and prevent pollution of the bay and river waters of the state, Judge Leon Gray of the superior court of Alameda county has affirmed the conviction of the Sudden & Christensen Company in police court where the company was ordered to pay a fine of $300. The fine was assessed as a result of the charge made by John Spencer, director of hydraulics for the fish and game division, that the steamer Edna Christensen had discharged bilge water loaded with oil into the waters of the estuary on August 10. The case was tried before Judge McKinnon of Emeryville, sitting in the Oakland police court in place of Judge Bacon. Testimony regarding the complaint and the offense was given by Spencer. Deputy Fish and Game Commissioner J. L. Bundock, and Charles Jennings, police officer on the Oakland force, who witnessed the discharge of oil into the bay. McKinnon found the defendant company guilty and levied the fine mentioned, but the case was appealed with the result above noted. "Sustaining of the people in this case will have a mighty good effect on steamship masters and engineers who feel that milge water containing oil can be discharged into the bay waters, and Judge Gray's decision is much appreciated by the commission," Eugene D. Bennett, executive and attorney for the commission, declared when advised of the action of the court. Police on His Trail, But Burglar Escapes Orange county deputy sheriffs made a fruitless search in Los Angeles Saturday for a thief who stole goods valued at several hundreds of dollars from the Nimmo ranch, near Irvine, several days ago. A suspect trailed to Los Angeles and said to have been carrying a heavy suitcase, managed to escape in the crowds of Christmas shoppers after Los Angeles was reached, it was said. Deputy Sheriff Harry Carter is handling the case. The bunk house of the Nimmo ranch was entered and the following articles stolen: a saddle, a silver mounted bridle bit, a 20-foot rawhide rope, a 40-beam staircase, a 2-3 lemmons graph road about La Habra. Grand Canyon Ideal During This Season Weather conditions are ideal at the Grand Canyon at this time, according to a late report received from the touring department of the National Automobile Club, and road conditions are at the best, both the Williams and Maine roads having been recently graded. However, both roads are subject to weather conditions and local inquiry should be made before attempting them. Should they be in poor condition due to local storms, motorists can always reach the canyon by train. While this scenic marvel always offers manifold attractions, during the winter months the colorings are more intense, and motorists traversing the National Old Trails route will be well rewarded if this 65-mile side trip is made. Buttons on children's rompers should be few in number, large, easily reached, made with a long shank, and firmly sewed on with a stay underneath. The buttonholes should be firm, and made in reinforced bands. Front buttons for easy dressing are advisable. Buttons on the drop seat should be placed near the underarms rather than in the middle of the back. Elect First Woman President of Center Mrs. T. W. Clark became president of the Cypress Farm Center at a meeting with over forty in attendance. By this election she attains the distinction of being the first lady president of any farm center in Orange county. She is a progressive woman with pleasing appearance, and will undoubtedly be able to carry on the center activities with the high record it has already established. Cypress has a record of doing the unusual thing, which usually works out to a good advantage, and we expect similar results on this occasion. 8 Wells Started In Orange County Eight oil wells were started in Orange county during the past week, according to a repor from R. D. Bush, state oil and gas supervisor. Thirty projects were started in California, with Long Beach leading with 30 wells. Orange county had two abandonments, the Sun Oil Company quitting its No. 11 at Huntington Beach, and the Petroleum Securities Company its Kraamer No. 1 near Atwood. Seven wells were commenced at Huntington Beach, with one in the Coyote Hills field, the latter well being the project of the Holly Development Company, Lehmer No. 1. The beach wells were as follows: Pacific Coast Oil Company Lippencall No. 1, Duncan & Lea Petroleum Corporation No. 3, Standard Oil Company Nos. B-60, 6, 7, 8, and 9. CALIFORNIA'S RECORD California, with 3.7 per cent of the total population of the nation, contributed 4.9 per cent of all the national internal revenue receipts for the fiscal year-1927, according to figures made public by the California Taxpayers' Association. California ranks seventh in the Union in per capita of internal revenue receipts for the fiscal year. With a population of 4,433,000 and total receipts of $139,488,000, the per capita in California is $31.47. When you buy sheets at the January white sales, be sure to get them long enough and wide enough, so they can be tucked in at the foot and the sides, and turned over the blankets at the top edge, to protect them. Measure your pillows before you start out to buy pillow cases, so you will know what size to get.
