OBSERVATIONS GETTING THE MEAT OUT OF THE COCOANUT WITH a presidential year coming upon the people, there are many who rant and rave upon the enforcement of the Eighteenth Amendment as being the big question to be settled. But this problem can be cured by educating the people, especially the younger generation, upon the folly of the intemperate indulgence in strong drink. The conservation of water in the western states is far more important to the people than the enforcement of the Volstead Act. With the rapid advance of these states, the conserving of water is paramount. Governmental aid is indispensable and should be forthcoming. The curbing of the rapacious wealthy middleman—the fellow who dictates the price of products to the producer and likewise to the consumer—is of the greatest importance to the farmer and laboring man. The keeping of this country out of any future war is a thousand times more important to the people of the United States than the much discussed prohibition question. These are but a few of the questions that are of more concern to the people than the booze bugaboo. ONE OF THE JOHNNY-COME-LATELIES TWO MEN were seated in a restaurant the other morning, waiting for the waffles, when one of them casually remarked: "You had better take along your overcoat, and be prepared for rain." The man was ready to take a trip into the upper valley. "These damp, cloudy mornings, I believe, are sure signs of rain. I have been here several months, and I feel sure we are due for a good soaking rain. Better take your rubber along, also," observed this wise man. But an old-timer chuckled to himself, for he knew that what this man said looked like rain clouds were only one of those high fogs. MISSING THE LONG TRAIL AWAY back in Vermont, during a flood, an old black horse and a young gray were caught in a raging stream when a river flowed over a stock farm, and both horses started to swim. Both of them were struggling to reach the shore. Then the old horse began to falter, and finally started to sink. But the young horse, swimming nearby, paused, being uncertain what he should do. Soon the head of the old horse suddenly reappeared, and MISSING THE LONG TRAIL AWAY back in Vermont, during a flood, an old black horse and a young gray were caught in a raging stream when a river flowed over a stock farm, and both horses started to swim. Both of them were struggling to reach the shore. Then the old horse began to falter, and finally started to sink. But the young horse, swimming nearby, paused, being uncertain what he should do. Soon the head of the old horse suddenly reappeared, and the animal set his teeth into the mane of his mate. Tugging gamely, the gray started for the bank, trailing his exhausted companion, and at last reached the shallow water. Several men were there and drew both animals ashore and later put on their nosebags, and no doubt old Dobbin was delighted. EATING OUT OF THEIR HANDS IT IS said physicians in some eastern hospitals have employed hypnotism instead of anesthetics while performing delicate operations. It is of record that some high-powered stock salesmen have used some sort of somnambulism for many moons in their activities in unloading their paper on unsuspecting people. WOLF IN SHEEP'S CLOTHING A NEW indoor game being played in the larger cities is for a matronly-looking dame to work up an acquaintance in her neighborhood, especially among the wealthy class, then invite a number of ladies to a tea party and, when the stage is all set, have a couple of strong arm pals come in and rob the bunch. THE BALLOT IS THE PEOPLE'S WEAPON IN SEVERAL city elections held recently, the people knocked the "bosses" for a row of pork barrels by going to the polls and voting. Just why people will register and then not vote is a problem past finding out. But when they do use the elective franchise, boss rule takes a slump. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER IN A backwoods town in a Middle West state the town board forgot to call the regular city election. When the trustees found out their mistake, why, they just set the date ahead a couple of weeks and went at the balloting as though nothing had ever happened. THE PIN MONEY THE way those two home-run twins pick up the ducats makes a fellow believe in Santa Claus. Recently they got $4700 for appearing in a patented pair of overalls down Kansas way. NO, SIR, CRIME DOESN'T PAY JUST the other day thirteen prisoners were sent to the state penitentiary from an adjoining county. The sentences range from one to fifty years in each case. These men will have a long time to think the matter over. EDDIE, FETCH THE SILVER SPOON WHENEVER it rains nowadays, and the sun shines warmly immediately, the mushroom hunters go in quest of the juicy plants out in the lowlands. Incidentally, if toadstools get mixed together with other California Californians... Incidentally, if toadstools get mixed up with them, usually the family doctor is sent for hurriedly—and sometimes the undertaker is called. THAT INFERIORITY COMPLEX NOW what a lot of guys want to know is why is a baby—especially tohse who let out a yell when the Sheik and the Sheba go into a clinch—taken to a movie show? OUGHT TO CALL THE RAG 'THE ECHO' AWAY down East an editor became so fussed up over a daylight robbery in the old home town that he was unable to get out his paper on the date of publication, and waited until the following day to tell his subscribers all about it. MAKE AMERICA SAFE FOR AMERICANS IT IS reported that more rigid enforcement of the immigration law in respect to those seeking work in the films will be urged before a meeting of the actors' association in a movie town, in a movement to stem the tide of foreign invasion of the picture colony. The same thing should apply to all lines of endeavor. PEACE ON EARTH ANOTHER Armistice Day has come and gone. People rejoice on that memorable day because that cruel World war ended. It never should have been started. Wars do no good. Some people say wars are started to make business. This may be true, because it is said 81 millionaires were made in this country on account of that war, which brought 24 nations in mortal combat. But there should be no more wars. People should settle their differences diplomatically. Allow the dove of peace a chance to alight and all would be well. Why drench the battle fields with the blood of the youth of any land? No, there must be no more wars! More Oil Storage Urged for Emergency Eighty-five citrus growers met at the farm advisor's office last week to consider orchard protection by efficient methods of heating. Floyd Young, frost forecaster of the United States weather bureau for this district and Southern California, reported that a survey conducted by his department revealed the fact that the storage facilities in Orange county districts where orchard heating is practiced show a decided deficiency in case an unusual cold spell should obtain this season. According to data collected, there is storage at present to take care of one and a half fillings for the number of heaters now in use. Storage facilities for about 1,400,000 gallons of oil are at present provided. Young figures that this should be increased to at least two fillings, or better three, so as to meet any emergency of unfavorable weather such as a protracted cold spell, or even washouts from storms that may interfere with normal distribution of fuel by truck or railroad. Special attention will be given by growers this year to a more efficient regulation of the orchard heaters to improve fuel combustion and reduce smoke. The oil secured for this season is of a lower asphaltum base, according to officials of the frost protection associations in the county. Frost forecasts are again being broadcasted over radio station KHJ this year by the weather bureau. These come on the air at 8 o'clock every evening and cover Orange county points, together with other citrus sections of California. Oranges at the breakfast table, a salad at dinner, things formerly regarded as luxuries by families of average means, are fast coming to be necessities. DELINQUENT TAX LIST In And For The Epperly, F.
