Yuletide Customs In Various Lands Six Hundred Million People Observe Christmas Holiday With more than 600,000,000 throughout the world observing Yuletide, the ceremonies, alike in most of their fundamental religious aspects, will differ materially in various countries as to details. Two thousand years before Christ, Yuletide was celebrated by the Aryans, the great branch of the human family from which most of the Christian races are descended. The Aryans were sun-worshipers. Day by day, as the sun's power decreased, these primitive people feared he would be overwhelmed by darkness and remain forever in the underworld. When he apparently wheeled about and grew stronger, they felt he had been born again. The Hweolon-tide, or turning-time, therefore was a period of rejoicing at the annual re-birth of the sun. The origin of many Yuletide customs may be found in the myths and legends of our Indo-European ancestors. Balder, the sun god, was slain when the jealous fire-god Loki, had him pierced through and through with a sprig of mistletoe, the only missile that could harm him. Gifts from the gods and goddesses were laid on Balder's bler, and he sent back gifts from the realm of darkness. It probably is from the Roman saturnalia, however, that the custom of exchanging presents and much of the spirit of revelry is derived. Mistletoe, the "heal-all" of the Druids, was held in peculiar reverence. It was cut by the chief priest with a golden sickle, used for no other purpose. Since the fact of Christ's birth was not recorded and there was no certainty as to date, the early Christian fathers wisely ascribed it to Yuletide, and the birthday of the sun became that of the Son. The birth of Christ was celebrated on dates varying from the first to the sixth of January; on dates of such festivals as the Jewish Passover, of the Feast of the Tabernacles. But December 25 was ever a favorite date. a stocking hung up to dry. In Norway, Santa Claus has an assistant, Kris Kringle, while in Switzerland, Father Christmas is accompanied by his wife, St. Lucy, who looks after little girls. In Russia gifts are credited to the Babbuska, or Grandmother. In France, Italy, Spain and other Latin countries, the Praesepio, or Christmas Crib, is an important feature of Yuletide. The Praesepio frequently includes the stable and its occupants, Mary, Joseph and "the Bambino" or Holy Babe, and the surroundings of Bethlehem. Columbus entered the port of Bohlo, Haiti, on St. Nicholas Day, 1492, and named the port Saint Nicholas. The Santa Maria having been wrecked, Columbus and his men worked till dawn Christmas morning salvaging the wreck. The day following he was feasted by Chief Guacanagari, who wore a shirt and a pair of gloves given him by Columbus, and a coronet of gold, though other chiefs were clad in nature's garb. Captain John Smith, of the Virginia colony, spent his first Yuletide as a captive among the Powhatan Indians. In after years the Jamestown settlers were to become noted for their hospitality at Christmas time. The Puritans arrived at Plymouth in December, 1620. According to the Journal of William Bradford, "ye 25 day (Dec.) they began to erect ye first house for comome use to receive them and their goods." Thus, although the Puritan leader avoids the word Christmas, it appears that home-building in the colony began on that day. The Puritans seem to have had a happy Christmas dinner on board the Mayflower, though that was the last for many a year, as any observance of the way was frowned upon. Little by little, Christmas as a holiday was brought into favor, but it was as late as 1856, while Nathaniel P. Banks was governor, that the day was made a legal holiday in Massachusetts. The good Dutch Fathers sailed for the New World with the image of St. Nicholas for a figurehead on their vessel. They named the first church they built for St. Nicholas and he became the patron saint of the new city on Manhattan Island. Pope Julius, 337-352 A.D., after careful investigation, considered it settled beyond doubt that Christ was born on December 25. The holly, laurel, mistletoe of the Druids still serve as decorations of the season, standing as emblems of resurrection and immortal hope. New Year's Day as a feast day is one of the oldest, being mentioned by Tacitus in the first century, but it is first referred to as a Christian festival about 567. The Romans dedicated the day to the god Janus, for whom January was named. Numa ordained it as a day of good fellowship, when grudges were to be forgotten and sacrifices of cake and wine made to the two-faced god who looked forward and backward. Few countries have entered more heartily into yuletide observance than England. To the customs of the Druids were added many of the Romans and Saxons. The yule-log, carols, the boar's head, mummers and the mystery plays, and the famous beverage of "almb'swool," made by bruising roasted apples and mixing the juice with ale or milk, all played a part in the observance. There is some uncertainty as to the date of the first Christmas cards, but general opinion is that the initiative belongs to J.C. Horsley, R.A., who in 1846, on behalf of Sir Henry Cole, dispatched a card described as "an elaborate affair," showing two allegorical designs of clothing the naked and feeding the hungry, with a family group of three generations, quaffing wine." Another custom originating in the United States, growing rapidly there and even spreading to other countries, is that of sending telegrams or greeting at Christmas or New Year's. Seeing the possibilities offered for greater usefulness, the Western Union Telegraph Company several years ago began paying special attention to the holiday greeting service, and specially decorated message blanks and envelopes were devised. The service since has been extended to cablegrams, and the telegraph administrations in foreign countries have been studying it with a view to possible adoption. In feudal times in England, yuletide observance was on a magnificent scale, several thousand retainers sometimes being feasted in the baronial hall. In 1248, King Henry III held a feast for the poor which lasted a week. Richard II held Christmas at Litchfield, and 2000 oxen and 200 tuns of wine were consumed. The lords received gifts from their tenants at yuletide and sovereigns reChristmas dinner on board the Mayflower, though that was last for many a year, as any observance of the way was frowned upon. The good Dutch Fathers sailed for the New World with the image of St. Nicholas for a figurehead on their vessel. They named the first church they built for St. Nicholas and he became the patron saint of the new city on Manhattan Island. Thanks to these sturdy old Dutchmen, many delightful customs of Christmas observance were preserved to posterity. Yuletide has been singularly connected with important events in the history of the United States. On Christmas night, 1776, Washington crossed the Delaware to capture nearly a thousand Hessians at their Christmas revelries. A few days later, December 30, congress resolved to send commissioners to the courts of Europe, and the Yuletide achievements of the Colonial army were declared by Frederick the Great to be "the most brilliant of any recorded in the annals of military action." The year following was a gloomy yuletide, for the American forces lay encamped at Valley Forge. Christmas eve, 1783, Washington laid aside forever his military uniform. Martha Washington held her first public reception in the executive mansion on Christmas eve, and at yuletide a few years later, the country was mourning the death of Washington. January 1, 1863, Lincoln issued the Proclamation of Emancipation, and on December 25, 1868, the proclamation of "unconditional pardon and amnesty to all concerned in the late insurrection." LEGION NOTES Lieutenant-Governor Buron Pitts, representing Governor Young and Colonel Henry G. Mathewson, for the state department of the American Legion, will be the principal speakers at the dedication of a memorial marker to Contra Costa boys who lost their lives in the World war on December 11. The memorial is the gift of the people of Contra Costa county to the American Legion and is located near Walnut Creek. Mortimer B. Veale will be the chairman of the dedicatory ceremonies. Senator Hiram W. Johnson and Senator Samuel M. Shortridge, together with the members of the California delegation in the House of Representatives, have been appealed to by State Adjutant James K. In 1248, King Henry III held a feast for the poor which lasted a week. Richard II held Christmas at Litchfield, and 2000 oxen and 200 tuns of wine were consumed. The lords received gifts from their tenants at yuletide, and sovereigns received presents from their nobles. Queen Elizabeth replenished her wardrobe in this way, and if quantity and quality didn't satisfy, the donors were informed of the fact. In 1561 she received a present of a pair of black silk stockings knit by one of her maids, and never afterward would she wear those made of cotton. From the first, the Puritans in England opposed the observance of Christmas, and on December 24, 1652, parliament decreed that there should be no observance of the occasion. It was only gradually that observance came back into repute. Martin Luther has been given credit for introducing the Christmas tree into Germany. Doubtless he did much to popularize it, but the Christmas tree is believed to have had its origin in mythological times. In Germany, St. Nicholas has a day set apart in his honor, December 6. St. Nicholas, bishop of Myra, who died about 343 A.D., was noted for anonymous charities. It was once the custom in Germany for a man to impersonate St. Nicholas on St. Nicholas even, and to inquire how the children had behaved during the year, who were deserving of presents, and who merited a touch of the birch rods he carried. In some places, Knight Ruprecht takes the place of St. Nicholas. In Holland, Germany and more recently in other countries, the benevolent saint is familiarly known as Santa Claus, and he is said to have been introduced into England from America, where he had been naturalized by early Dutch settlers. The hanging of a stocking as a receptacle for gifts was accounted for by a story that St. Nicholas dropped a purse down a chimney, which fell into Senator Hiram W. Johnson and Senator Samuel M. Shortridge, together with the members of the California delegation in the House of Representatives, have been appealed to by State Adjutant James K. Fisk to support legislation which will be offered in congress pledging the federal government to furnish hospital treatment to all veterans in need of it, regardless of the origin of their diseases or disabilities. A large number of California veterans would be affected by the proposed amendment which would force the United States Veterans' Bureau to give treatment to disabled war veterans. At the present time, according to State Adjutant James K. Fisk of the American Legion, the bureau may furnish free hospital treatment, if beds are available, but it is not obligatory to give such care. Spurred on into action by the forest fire destruction in Southern California, immediate organization of a state-wide commission on "emergencies," composed of members of the various American Legion posts in California, has been begun, under the direction of Chairman Sidney Hotchner of San Francisco, who will head the commission of World war veterans. The organization of emergency commissions in the metropolitan areas of the state will be accomplished first, according to the plans of the Legion officials. The Legionnaires will co-operate with local organizations in rendering first aid, in police duty, and in being generally helpful, according to Hotchner. State headquarters of the American Legion will soon receive $5000 for the various agencies of the organization engaged in child welfare work and rehabilitation work throughout the state, according to State Commander Phil Dodson. The fund was made available through the proceeds of a benefit baseball game staged in Los Angeles recently and participated in by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. New York Yankee home-run kings. Explains New Reproducing Device "No person hears his or her own voice as others hear it," states Dean Ray K. Immel of the School of Speech of the University of Southern California, in explaining the telegraphone, a new speech recording and reproducing device adopted for classroom use at the Trojan institution. "As a concrete example of how we expect to use the telegraphone in the speech classes," states Dean Immel, "ten students at the beginning of a semester will register a paragraph of one minute's duration on a record, leaving a 'minute' of blank space between each student's voice. This record will be preserved. Then, after taking courses in voice and diction, technique of reading, art of interpretation, dramatics, story telling, public speaking, pulpit oratory, speech science, or argumentation and debate, the same ten students, using the blank space left between the original speeches, will again record the same paragraph and by actual comparison demonstrate the improvement due to study." Having the distinction of being the only one in the West with the combined advantages of university and professional work, the School of Speech of the University of Southern California trains the platform lecturer and professional speaker as well as the business man and woman and pre-legal student in every phase of oral English, and through a study of the best in literature and drama stimulates a creative use of the emotions and imagination in stage presentation.
