New Business House Will Open Here Soon Kress Chain Store Co. Buys Lot and Will Erect Building The S. H. Kress Company, owners of a chain of stores throughout the United States, has purchased a site here and is preparing to erect a building and establish a store. The Walter L. Bigham property on West Center street has been secured by the company, and it is understood the price paid was $1000 per front foot. It is the purpose of the company to erect a $40,000 building, thus bringing the total cost to $100,000. The deal, which is said to involve one of the largest considerations ever connected with a transaction of this kind here, is now in escrow. It involves a business lot with a frontage of 60 feet on West Center street and a depth of 140 feet and the three-year-old modern business structure that now stands on the property. According to G. C. Esker, Southern California representative of the Kress company, plans are now being made for razing the present building on the property to make way for a two-story class "A" constructed building with a full-sized basement and for the establishment in this new structure of a full stocked Kress department store. Leases held by the present occupancies of the Bigham building, the Renner grocery, Irwin jewelry store, Spear's studio, and the Hoffman shoe repair shop, expire January 1, 1928, and razing of the structure is expected to commence soon after that date. Mr. Esker said. Spear's studio has already secured a new location at 314 West Center street, and is expecting to be opened up in its new home before the first of the year. The other enterprises are said to have made tentative arrangements for their new locations. Choice of Anaheim as a site for the new Kress branch is regarded as a recognition of this city's peculiar advantages as a trading center for the entire northern Orange county territory. Over 2,000,000 seals found their way into Orange county homes with an appeal for help in carrying out the work of stamping out the white plague. The seal letter appeals to purchasers to "make Orange county the healthiest as well as the wealthiest" and declares that an all year round preventorium is necessary in order to achieve this ambition. Recalling the accomplishments at the summer camp this year in which 40 children galved an average of five pounds of weight, the message declares that "the natural resources of the county are a financial asset to the community, but saving the lives and future earning power of these little people who at present are unable to fight alone, is worth more morally, spiritually and financially to our community." As the campaign got away to its official start Friday, the offices of the organization, in the Hall of Records, Santa Ana, are expected to redouble their activity in handling the huge mass of letters and contributions which will pour in bearing the gifts which make possible the work of safeguarding Orange county children against the disease. For the past four years, under the direction of Mrs. Amelia Meagher, director of the health camp in Santiago canyon, the anti-tuberculosis campaign has developed steadily until today it has reached the point where it is regarded as one of the most efficient in Calliope's studio, expire January 1, 1928, and razing of the structure is expected to commence soon after that date. Mr. The Anaheim branch will be the company's two hundred and ninth store in the United States and the second in Orange county, a large branch being established by the company in Santa Ana slightly more than a year ago. The present building on the property was erected by Dr. Bigham three years ago. It is of brick construction and thoroughly modern in design and architecture. Mails Loaded Down With Xmas Seals Rev. Hilgenfeld of Anaheim supplied for Rev. Neal Sunday morning, the Gospel Team of Long Beach in the evening. Mrs. Lillie Tournat, who has lived in the Morgan house, on Ninth street since May, has bought a lot in Homewood opposite the new Lindbergh school. She has also bought a house on Eleventh street, which she will have moved to her lot immediately. She expects to start a little store with school supplies, candy, etc., as soon as the school is moved to its new quarters. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Wahl, Miss Bernice Wahl, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Tipton, and Mrs. Ella Liggett attended the picnic reunion of old residents of Grover, Colo., Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Owens spent the week-end at their ranch, near San Marcos. Mr. Owens expects to move the latter part of the week to the apartments over the Robison store. Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Nelson of Santa Ana were Saturday evening dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. L. T. Wilsey. A Thanksgiving entertainment was given by the pupils of the school on Wednesday afternoon. Miss Hattle Stanley spent last week with her niece, Mrs. C. A. Porter of Fullerton, who was quite sick with quinasea. Master Lee Porter spent the week with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Robison. It was announced, Sunday morning, that A. R. Anderson of the Anderson Syndicate, subdividers, who have purchased and are subdividing the Guthrie ranch, would give one lot, to be sold at auction December 17, to the church fund. The fund is now over $12,000. NEW FORD AUTOMOBILE EXPLAINED TO PEOPLE (Continued from Page One) efficiency of the engine. Also, it means longer life, the lower engine speed insuring less wear on engine parts. The low revolution speed is also a substantial factor in lessening vibration. The bore is 3⅓ inches, storke 4⅔ inches. The unusually modern design of this vehicle makes it suitable for use in various applications. For the past four years, under the direction of Mrs. Amelia Meagher, director of the health camp in Santiago canyon, the anti-tuberculosis campaign has developed steadily until today it has reached the point where it is regarded as one of the most efficient in California by Christmas seal authorities. The goal of the director is to make the camp a year-round preventorium. It is her belief that it is more desirable to combat tuberculosis in children by building up their resistance before the plague has a chance to attack them. "Tuberculosis can be cured in the majority of cases if it is discovered early, but if not found until its ravages have proceeded for some time in the human body, it is hard to cure at all," Mrs. Meagher declared. "The modern idea in salesmanship is to meet objections of the prospect before they are made. In the same way the up-to-date method of fighting tuberculosis is to make our children so healthy that they can resist the attacks of the disease. That is why we are working so hard at the health camp and the reason why we are ambitious to operate it 12 months in the year." SACREDNESS OF MARRIAGE A California pastor recently remarked that he had been in ministerial work for eighteen years, and he could count all the divorce cases in all his parishes on the fingers of one hand. He says that clergymen save many homes from dissolution. This is interesting testimony. Many ministers would say the same thing. It suggests that many people who are uncomfortable in the married state could yet adjust themselves to its requirements, and make the concessions necessary for a happy home, if they had a keener sense of the sacredness of marriage. When people feel that the marriage vows are a solemn pledge which it is up to them to fulfill, the danger of these separations is greatly decreased. NEW FORD AUTOMOBILE EXPLAINED TO PEOPLE (Continued from Page One) ficiency of the engine. Also, it means longer life, the lower engine speed insuring less wear on engine parts. The low revolution speed is also a substantial factor in lessening vibration. The bore is 3½ inches, storke 4¼ inches. The unusually large crankshaft, which is both statically and dynamically balanced, weighs 28 pounds. This balancing, combined with the lightness of aluminum alloy pistons, further combine to reduce vibration and increase riding and comfort and safety. In addition to freedom from vibration, it is announced that the car is unusually quiet, a great deal of attention having been paid to this feature by the Ford engineers. In the engine, the timing gears are made of bakelized fabric, which is much quieter than metal. The cams on the camshaft have been so designed as to prevent valve clicking. The coach work of the car is as distinctive as its performance. There is a noticeable European touch in line and contour. It is not only designed for exterior beauty, but has as well the interior roominess, convenience and luxurious appointments to be found in much higher priced automobiles. On an instrument board of satin-finished nickel are mounted the speedometer, gasoline gauge, ammeter and ignition lock, with a dash light in the center. The new military-type sun visor, with crown roof and round corners, are features of the closed models. Unusually narrow pillars and very wide doors and windows give maximum vision. Nickel-ed radiator shell and headlamps further accentuate the exterior attractiveness, while choices of four colors in pyroxylin finish are offered. Simplicity in design has also been carried to the ignition. There is only one coil, in a waterproof case. There are no vibrators too djust, and no exposed cables to work loose or short circuit from water. The distributor is located in a readily accessible position. ANAHEIM GAZETTE on top of the engine. Centrifugal water pump, large radiator and airplane propeller-type fan provide a cooling system which makes the car very difficult to overheat, except from abuse, such as running without enough oil, or dry radiator. From 20 to 30 miles to a gallon of gasoline, depending upon driving speed, is the gasoline consumption announced. Feed to carburetor is by gravity. The oiling system, also a distinctive Ford design, is a combination of pump, splash and gravity feed. The new transmission is of the selective sliding gear type, with standard shift, three speeds forward and one reverse. The main shaft runs on ball bearings, the counter shaft on roller bearings, and the reverse idler on bronze bearings, a power-saving design unusual on light cars. Shifting of gears is noiselessly and easily accomplished, at the pressure of a finger. Multiple dry-disc clutch, rear axle of three-quarter floating type, housed in electrically welded steel, and spiral gear drive are interesting features. The axle shafts carry none of the weight of the car, the wheels running on roller bearings on the housing. Newly developed springs of the transverse semi-elliptic type and hydraulic shock absorbers prevent excessive up-and-down movement and remove side sway. Irreversible steering gear, which prevents shocks from being transmitted back to the hands of the driver, makes handling exceptionally easy. Maximum steering safety is further provided by a gear housing of welded steel forgings, and a steel tube steering column welded into the housing, making a sturdy and exceptional safe one-piece unit. Ford-designed steel spoke wheels, completely welded into a one-piece assembly, are provided. There are six models of the new car. They are the phaeton, roadster, sport coupe, coupe, Tudor sedan and Fordor sedan. M. P. Thompson is preparing for a public reception next Friday, when models of the new line will be shown in photographs and charts. Is your boy in his "teens" always hungry? Scientists say it is quite normal for him to crave more food, perhaps than any one else in the family. CHILDREN AND CHRISTMAS If there is any hard-crusted old codger who intends to cut down expenses this year by depriving children of the joys of Christmas, let him think twice. Possibly it is true that there is a depression here and there in spots in this mighty country. In the deliberate opinion of mankind, the most monstrous fiend is he who robs a child of happiness. There is something so diabolical in such a crime that it stands beyond the pale of ordinary atrocity. When one thinks of the light of a child's eyes driven out by the disappointment that is keener than sorrow; when one returns to childhood and shares in the unutterable woe of those who are forgotten at Christmas time, there is a surge of passionate anger against the man who could thus blot out the sun of childhood's sky. If there is any man at this season who is alone with unhappy memories behind him, and a gloomy outlook ahead, let him go out and buy some of the inexpensive but marvelously ingenious gifts for children and hoard seek out children who have no unhappy memories blacker up the wall. Then whether fancy pants bring and kindness to children though not less important.
