Anaheim, Calif., Nov. 24, 1927 Double Windshield Wiper Gives Driver Full Vision The problem of keeping both halves of the windshield free from rain has been successfully solved by the use of a double electric cleaner. Above photo from the Western Auto Supply Company of this safety accessory. The ease with which the portion of the windshield directly in front of the driver may be kept free from rain drops through the use of an automatic windshield cleaner has led to the present demand for a similar device for the passenger's side at the right of the driver's seat. Keeping both halves of the glass clean has been solved through the use of the double McConnell electric windshield cleaner, according to J. J. Hunt, local manager of the Western Auto Supply Company. "D. A. McConnell, the original manufacturer of the Klaxon horn, has perfected the first really engineered double cleaner. This compact, self-contained instrument is built in a single unit and is not merely a double attachment arrangement," says Mr. Hunt. "The windshield glass obscured by drops of water during a shower makes driving hazardous and gives the driver a feeling of helplessness. The efficient single-type cleaner only does half the job, as the driver by being unable from the right. "The double clear full vision of the blades sweep clean the entire sieve. Through the use motor the cleaner even speed and hills are encountered of speed is made." Citrus Crop Adds To State's Wealth Protect the Young Citrus Trees Now Party of 5 In F Citrus Crop Adds To State’s Wealth Growers Receive $120,000,000 From Orchards in Past Year California citrus growers set new records for both volume and financial returns during the 1926-27 season by shipping 70,600 carloads of citrus fruits which returned to the state in round numbers $120,000,000. These figures exceed the previous record of 1925-26 by almost $22,000,000 on a 7000-car increase in shipments. Shipments consisted of 57,163 carloads of oranges and grapefruit and 13,437 carloads of lemons. The exchange alone marketed 50,468 carloads—38,891 of oranges and grapefruit and 11,577 cars of lemons. Returns to exchange shippers for their 22,250,000 box business, estimating value of cars yet unsold, reached $85,-295,840, with a delivered value to the wholesale trade of $114,843,724. The estimated retail value of this crop was $255,000,000. Each American family spent on an average of $9.33 for California citrus fruits, or a per capita expenditure of $2.15. Export gains were substantial. Europe took 500,000 boxes of Sunkist oranges and grapefruit, more than double the volume of the preceding season. Hawaii, the Philippines and Orient purchased 200,000 boxes. There are now 41,614 Sunkist extractors-in operation, 7176 having been sold by the department of fresh fruit drinks during the season just ended. Conservatively estimated, these machines now represent an annual consumption of 2,080,700 boxes or 5202 carloads of oranges and lemons in juice form. Because of the volume of fruit handled, the total cost per box of exchange service, much of which benefits the entire industry, is less than the charges of any competing distributing agency for marketing alone. The total marketing cost, including advertising, for exchange growers was 2.41 per cent of the delivered value of the fruit. Protect the Young Citrus Trees Now Owners of young orange or lemon trees, one, two or three years of age can well take steps to provide protection from possible frost injury this winter. It is better to be safe than sorry, as the modern saying goes. It is not economical to provide orchard heaters for young acres from one to three years of age. Wrapping with some insulating material has proven very satisfactory. There are many different types of material that can be used. Corn stalks, tule stalks, sudan grass, milo, newspapers, etc., have been used in Orange county. The important thing to keep in mind is to tie the material fairly tightly around the trunk of the young tree. The insulation should be about three or four inches thick, making a diameter of eight or nine inches. The ties should be made at both ends and in the middle. The stalks should be at least as long as the trunk and could project up into the crotch of the tree. If newspaper is used, it is better to crinkle it than to put it on smoothly. The small air spaces in the wrinkles serve as insulation chambers. The use of loose tree protectors is not safe. The cold air will penetrate the space between the protector and the tree. The protection should be removed after all danger of cold has passed. AUTO CURFEW The first automobile curfew law on record is at Seminole, Okla. At midnight the curfew rings, and all cars must be off the streets or their owners will be arrested and fined. The reason for such drastic curtailment of night riding is found in the fact that Seminole streets were getting so cluttered up with cars at night that the city streets force was unable to work, and so the town officials decided to pass a curfew law to handle the situation. In Japan individual citrus trees are known which, according to records, are at least 300 years old and have changed little in that time. Party of 50 Men In Forestry Tour To Form Two More Protection Units Two more units of a new organization, known as the Orange County Forest Protective League, will be formed in the near future. If the farm bureau committee follows the instructions given them at a recent meeting of forest enthusiasts. This meeting, which was held in Santa Ana for the purpose of securing the co-operation of a few men able and willing to become crew leaders in the case of forest fires, grew into a movement to organize a county-wide league for forest protection. Before the evening was over, the Santiago division of the league was temporarily organized and the farm bureau committee instructed to organize two other units in the county. The objects of the association will be to foster forestry, provide for fire protection, and to establish training camps. John A. Ragan was elected temporary chairman, and A. M. Stanley, secretary. A committee on by-laws and membership was appointed with instructions to report as soon as the other units were formed. Clean Child's Bowels "California Fig Syrup" is Dependable Laxative for Sick Children Party of 50 Men In Forestry Tour Half a hundred people interested in the protection of Orange county's watershed made a tour of the mountain section Saturday, November 19, under the auspices of the farm bureau, cooperating with the United States forest service. The motorcade of 16 well filled cars left Santa Ana at 9 o'clock and, after visiting the nursery, at the Orange County park, traveled over the new $28,000 sky-line road to the summit of Black Star canyon. The party had the distinction of being the first people to traverse this road on the Orange county side, as well as being the first farm bureau forestry tour in the state. On return from the summit, luncheon was served at the ranger camp. This lunch proved to be an exception, both in point of service and food consumed. Talks were heard from a number of expertists. Prof. Woodbridge Metcalf, extension specialist in forestry, explained the general need of forest conservation. Paul Bailey, Orange county flood control engineer, fold the relationship between forests and floods. Everett Stanford, assistant chief forester Los Angeles, related the details of the plans used in that county. W. W. Hoy gave records of 'the run-off from Santiago, before and after the Hathaway fire, all of which made the trip highly educational as well as pleasant. The Hathaway fire caused the last flood, according to Hoy, and the water contained as high as 40 per cent silt, dut to barren hillsides. J. B. Stephenson stated that Santiago creek was too high for fording, even during the last storm. Because the United States and Finland have been making cheeses of the Swiss type, the cheese industry has proved less profitable in Switzerland, and the Swiss dairymen are turning to butter production. To stimulate butter production, the Swiss government has appropriated about $200,000 to assist the industry. Most of this, it is expected, will be devoted eventually to cover deficits caused by governmental guarantee of butter prices. W. B. CALDWELL AT THE AGE OF 83 To Dr. W. B. Caldwell, of Monticello, Ill., a practicing physician for 40 years, it seemed cruel that so many constipated men, women, children, and particularly old folks, had to be kept consistently "stirred up" and half sick by taking cathartic pills, tablets, salts, talomel and berry oils. While he knew that constipation was the cause of nearly all headaches, billiousness, indigestion and stomach misery, he did not believe that a sickening "purge" of "physic" was necessary. In Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin he discovered a laxative which helps to establish natural bowel regularity" even for those chronically constipated. Dr. Caldwell's Syrup Pepsin not only causes a gentle easy bowel movement but, best of all, it never grips, sickens or gets the system. Besides, it is solutely harmless, and so pleasant that even a cross, feverish, bilious, sick child gladly takes it.
