COMPLETION OF MONO-BEAR DIVE MONO CREEK BEAR CREEK LAYING TIME WITH DERRICK 9 FT. PIPE SURP. PORTED ON CONCRETE PIER WHERE RECORD-BREAKING & MILE "MONO-BEAR SIPHON" WAS BUILT BY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA EDISON COMPANY TO DIVERT WATERS OF MONO & BEAR CREEKS TO HUNTINGTON LAKE Capacity Twice That of L.A. Aqueduct. Took 100 Men 4 Months to Build Required Doring of 1000 ft. Curve Solids flow. Took 4 Miles of pipe, varying from 6 to 9 ft. in diameter BRINGING to a successful conclusion one of the most difficult pieces of engineering yet accomplished on its world renowned Big Creek-San Joaquin river hydro-electric project in the high Sierras of Fresno county, the Southern California Edison Company yesterday turned the water through the Mono-Bear diversion system, making 182,000 additional acre-feet of water a year available for use through its entire series of five power plants. This is slightly more than the combined storage of Florence and Huntington lakes and will help to fill the great new reservoir at Shaver lake, which is coming into operation next spring. This work has all been under the direction of George C. Ward, whose genius in connection with hydro-electric development has received national and academic recognition. For his masterly work in completing the 13-mile Florence Lake tunnel between Florence and Huntington lakes, Mr. Ward was presented with a magnificent bronze medallion by the United States Chamber of Commerce. In addition to this unusual distinction, Mr. Ward received an honorary degree of Doctor of Engineering from the University of Southern California. Mono and Bear creeks are situated across a mountain ridge from the San Joaquin river, on which river much of the construction work of the Edison company's hydro-electric project has been carried on. Through the construction of diversion dams on both Mono and Bear creeks, and the boring of two converging tunnels, it has been possible to bring all of the water from these two streams to the head of a long inverted siphon, stretching across the bed of the south fork of the San Joaquin river, thence to the Florence Lake tunnel. In planning for this great water reclamation project, the company took into consideration the fact that it had but seven months each year in which to carry on the work, and all effort was used toward bringing the work to completion prior to December 1, 1927. This work was carried on at an altitude of approximately 7000 feet, and from the first of December to the end of May the climate is such as to prevent the carrying on of any outside work. Beginning with the opening up of the trails in the spring of 1926, a construction force, numbering at times in excess of 1500 men, worked at top speed, until forced out of this altitude by the early snow in the fall of 1926. Plunging back into the wilderness just as early as the weather would permit in the spring of 1927, this construction crew again attacked the mighty forces of nature. This time they had but one object in view, and that to complete the task before winter snows again repelled them. More than 11,000 feet of tunnel was bored, and almost four miles of steel pipe were laid. This pipe varied in diameter from six feet to eight feet. To make possible the carrying of this pipe to its place on the line, it was necessary to construct more than eight miles of road through type of mountainous of the uneven nature in which this work very little storage in which to keep therefore necessary hand to mouth, and there more than a supply of pipe on silphon site. Fort Worth, Texas, southwestern center of the livestock industry, will ship more than 20 per cent of the Texas crop. From November 1 to Christmas, northern and eastern storage houses will keep the birds on ice for the demand—and the high prices. They learned the birds shrink on the parade from the ranges to the freight yards—and turkeys come high. So the march of the tri-toed gobblers down Cuero's main street will not take place this year. Once the Turkey Trot was Cuero's gala day, Poultry rancher and fanciers drove their winged stock for miles and herded them down the avenue to the railroad yards. After the cargo of Thanksgiving dinner poultry train pulled out with its birds the town celebrated. This year's shipping season will be marked by optimism, but not with a poultry parade. From far and near wagons loaded with turkeys will be hauled to the slaughter houses here, where the birds will be killed, packed in ice and shipped in barrels. The Texas crop this year will be slightly more than it was in 1926. Estimates obtained from county farm agents, retail and wholesale dealers indicate about 1200 cars will leave for outside markets. They will carry approximately 2,400,000 turkeys—about enough for the Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners of 10,000,000 persons—with plenty left for hash. Raisers report more good news for consumers. This year's birds will be bigger and fatter. Turkeys are fully 30 days older than they were in 1926. But for the ill-success of experimenters, the crop would have been twice as large. For the first time in history, efforts were made to hatch turkeys with incubators, but the artificially hatched birds died by the tens of thousands on the ranges and the raisers are holding back turkey hens this year as guardians for the next crop. Cuero is ready for the march to mar- Federal Road Signs Discussed by Expert Standardized signs for United States highways have been developed in a set of working drawings prepared by the United States Bureau of Public Roads, according to Ben Blow, field secretary of the National Automobile Club, who supplies the following information concerning the new signs: The set of designs provided is "based on definite principles calculated to produce uniformity of significance in the signs themselves, and make familiarity with them easy to acquire on the part of the most casual driver." The octagonal sign is used to indicate "stop" where for any reason such action is necessary. This sign is black on a yellow background. The diamond-shaped signs, commonly called "slow" signs, are used to indicate any condition inherent in the road itself requiring slow speed and caution on the part of the driver. This sign is also black on a yellow background. The circular sign, black on a yellow background, is used as an advance warning at railroad grade crossings. The square signs commonly known as "caution" signs are used to show any condition requiring caution that is not inherent in the road itself, but which is due to contiguous or adjacent conditions which are often intermittent or occasional. Rectangular shaped signs of various dimensions are used to carry directions and information for drivers. Route signs are black on a white background, except "rest station" signs which are white on a green background. States desiring a sign for general or special use, not included in the list of standard signs, may apply to the Bureau of Public Roads. Signs conforming to the United States system of signs and markers are being erected throughout the country. The man who is continually cracking jokes about women's clothes has very little to talk about. NO-BEAR DIVERSION SYSTEM Weather Bureau to Test Thermometers Citrus growers of Orange county who are equipped with orchard heaters for the winter season are urged to make use of the weather bureau service in testing their orchard thermometers. Ross Shafer, manager of the Tustin Frost Protection Association, announces an arrangement just made with the frost survey division of the weather bureau to collect all thermometers for test on Monday, November 21. Thermometers may be delivered to the nearest citrus association packing house in the various districts of the county any time this week, to and including Saturday, November 19. Harold Rathbone, assistant meteorologist, will collect the instruments on Monday. Mr. Shafer suggested that the grower's name be written on a sheet of paper and tied to each instrument to be tested. Paste or glue should not be used, because the thermometers are immersed in water during the test and glue would loosen. All instruments should be tested, even if found accurate in previous years. They have been found to vary a degree or two in many instances. Efficient management of heaters during the critical period is based on the use of accurate instruments from which accurate readings of the actual temperatures may be made. Former Brea Bank Official Indicted M. J. Wolfe, formerly an official of the Brea First National Bank, has been indicted by the federal grand jury in Los Angeles on a misapplication charge. Wolfe is in the county jail, having bee narrested in Brea a short time ago, after a state-wide search had been made for him. Search was started after he is said to have disappeared after another employee of the bank had tried to commit suicide because of asserted conditions in the bank. At the time of his arrest Wolfe told miles of road through the most rugged type of mountainous country. Because of the uneven nature of the territory in which this work was being done, very little storage space was available in which to keep the pipe. It was therefore necessary to literally work hand to mouth, and at no time was there more than a two to three days' supply of pipe on the ground at the siphon site. This meant that the transportation department, operating a great fleet of heavy duty trucks hauling these great lengths of pipe into the mountains, had to function faultlessly, as any breakdown in that department might have delayed the completion date. In bringing these two streams into subjection, the Edison company has brought into use an average yearly run-off of 182,000 acre-feet. The capacity of the Mono-Bear siphon is 600 second-feet, or 3000 miners inches, which is 50 per cent greater than the maximum capacity of the Los Angeles aqueduct. In 24 hours the siphon can deliver close to half a billion gallons of water into the Edison company's great storage reservoirs. Translated into electric energy, this tremendous flow of water means that the Edison company has 760,000,000 kilowatt hours of electricity available. In significance, this particular task ranks second only to the bringing into use of the record-breaking Florence Lake tunnel, the 13-mile bore which was completed in February, 1925. Federal Roads to Be Marked With Shields Eight Thousand Signs Will Be Needed for the Work Federal aid highways in California soon will be marked with the United States shield signs, in conformity with the number system of designation adopted some time ago by the American Association of State Highway Officials. This announcement was made following a conference attended by B. B. Meed, director of public works of the state; R. M. Morton, chief highway engineer; John H. Berryman, Jr., associate counsel of the Automobile Club Federal aid highways in California soon will be marked with the United States shield signs, in conformity with the number system of designation adopted some time ago by the American Association of State Highway Officials. The new signs will be enameled metal, shield shape, with black letters against a white background. They will be mounted on metal posts and across the top will be the world California. In the center will be the initials "U. S." and the number of the highway and at the bottom the insignia of the club erecting them, as is usual on the thousands of direction signs now dotting all highways of the state. Work has begun on manufacturing the signs, about 8000 of which will be required. It is expected that the first ones will be placed in about three weeks. The routes that will be signed in accordance with the federal provisions include Route 99, from Vancouver to El Centro; Route 101, from Port Los Angeles to San Diego; Route 80, from San Diego to Yuma; Route 66, from Los Angeles to the Colorado river at Topok; Route 91, from Daggett to the Nevada line; Route 50, from Sacramento to the Nevada line; Route 48, from Sacramento to Oakland, and Route 40; from San Francisco to the Nevada line. California will then take its place among the few states in the Union that have complied with the new federal provisions and will continue to lead all states in the adequacy of its highway markers, according to statements made by good roads enthusiasts following the decision of the conference.
