PUBLIC UTILITY ISSUES ABSORBED Capitalists Investing Heavily in Securities in the East "Visiting in New York and Chicago last week. I was greatly impressed by the demand for public utility securities in those investment centers," writes R. H. Ballard, general manager of the Southern California Edison Company. "Out here in California we know that new issues such as those put out by the Southern California Edison Company are quickly absorbed, but their great popularity is not fully appreciated until one has had an opportunity to observe how they are welcomed in the eastern market. In our own case we have had to limit in some way our sales in the east, otherwise all of our issues would be taken there. We take this position because we feel that our own consumers have the first right to participate in this California company. So far this year our stock sales have amounted to $25,000,000—mostly to citizens of Southern and central California within the area served by the Edison company. The same situation undoubtedly prevails among the many other companies that have adopted this plan of customer-ownership, which explains one element in the popularity of such securities. The local demand is so great that enough shares do not drift into the eastern market to satisfy the conservative investors living there. But underlying all this, we find the fundamental soundness of public utility securities. In the first place, the revenues of public utility companies are consistent, being but slightly affected by the common ups and downs of the business curve. They supply an essential service. Next we note that the business of utilities and particularly of the electric companies is growing steadily, as the standard of living advances. Finally, through state regulation such as we have in California, the relation between production cost and selling price is almost automatic, so that a fair return is assured to the full." Co-operation Urged For Truck Gardeners At the instance of many requests upn the Orange County Farm Bureau for some means of better marketing of miscellaneous crops produced by small growers, the directors of that organization recently assigned the problem to a committee of three men. The personnel of the committee, all men with considerable experience in marketing, includes J. A. Knapp of Garden Grove, C. L. Barnett of Cypress, and A. E. Block of Costa Mesa. After a series of meetings, the committee recommends the following marketing practices for small growers of truck crops: Establishment of co-operative way-side stores where the produce of several growers can be disposed of profitably. Doing away as much as possible with the "peddler" system of distribution. The planting of truck crops to mature during the "odd season," between California and Arizona deals. To illustrate, it was found by the committee that local lettuce produced in competition with Imperial valley lettuce has nearly always proven a financial failure, while good profits have been made with lettuce harvested after the Imperial crop has been moved. The establishment of co-operative marketing agencies among small growers in the various localities. The committee also recommends that an educational campaign be conducted through the farm bureau or other existing agencies, to teach small growers both in the matter of marketing and the proper planting and growing of truck crops. Orange County, Californi NOTICE There is delinquent tax described stock "But underlying all this, we find the fundamental soundness of public utility securities. In the first place, the revenues of public utility companies are consistent, being but slightly affected by the common ups and downs of the business curve. They supply an essential service. Next we note that the business of utilities and particularly of the electric companies is growing steadily, as the standard of living advances. Finally, through state regulation such as we have in California, the relation between production cost and selling price is almost automatic, so that a fair return is assured to the investor and at the same time a fair price is provided to the consumer. Hence public utility securities, more than any others, follow the true cost of money and are reasonably free from speculative influences. "The dollar invested in a public utility company immediately goes to work in the interest of the community. The immediate effect is through the payroll of the power company which uses this dollar in the building of a new power house or distribution line. The later and more important effect is seen when a new shop or factory comes into the neighborhood because there is a reliable and abundant supply of electric power and a new and permanent source of revenue is created. "In this way the plan of customer-ownership brings double dividends; there is the direct dividend paid to the stockholder and also the indirect dividend of general prosperity which follows the activities of the utility company. Where the power companies are carrying out brisf building programs, it will be found that the territory as a whole is moving at a good pace; with employment for labor, business for stores, savings for banks, payments for homes and money for social improvement and recreation. "It frequently has been said that the electrical business has become a barometer of economic conditions, to which we might add that the attitude of the money market toward public utility securities is a still more accurate barometer. To Southern California this means that there is plenty of money available to expand our electric supply and care for the hundreds of manufacturers who have their eyes on this section as the choice location for their factories." Licenses Granted To 38 Duck Clubs Hunters and ducks are both guaranteed an even break under the new regulations imposed by the division of fish and game of the Department of Natural Resources on commercial duck clubs. Thirty-eight commercial duck clubs have been granted permits to operate this year, and 46 operators have been licensed to work on these preserves. As a result of the strict regulations imposed by the fish and game division, the usual flood of complaints that generally pour into the office have been cut down to a minimum, B. D. Marx New Government Map Of Grand Canyon Park A noteworthy addition to the series of government topographic maps is a large map, in two sheets, of the Grand Canyon national park, Arizona. Just published by the geological survey, in co-operation with the national park service, Department of the Interior. This reservation, set aside as a national monument by President Roosevelt, in 1908, and made a national park by act of congress in 1919, has been increased in area from time to time; in fact, additions were made while this map was in course of publication, and as they have not yet been surveyed, they appear as blank areas within the park boundary. The park now includes about half the length of the canyon and contains approximately 1100 square miles of the most spectacular and remarkable rock formations in the world. The survey of the area was begun by the geological survey in 1902, and was carried forward until three quadrangles aggregating about 730 square miles of this exceedingly difficult country had been surveyed and the resulting maps published. The increasing interest in the Grand Canyon park necessitated the completion of the survey which has resulted in the publication of the present map. The map is printed in three colors—black, brown, and blue, for the works of man, the mountains and slopes, and the drainage respectively—with an additional green tint to accent the park boundaries. The scale is 1:48,000, or approximately three-quarters of a mile to the inch, and the contour interval 50 feet. The size of the map is 43x80 inches. If it is borne in mind that many of the individual cliffs are hundreds of feet high, it will readily be understood that much of this map must be considered a picture, for it will be found almost impossible to trace the contours into and out of the canyon walls. The map is based upon accurate instrumental control extended from stations whose exact positions have been determined by astronomical observation, with hundreds-of-points carefully located, lines of spirit levels run along the rim and down to the river, over 4000 feet below, and months spent by trained engineers in sketching the topography, and thus it represents an expenditure of funds beyond the consideration of any but an organization engaged in the great enterprise of making an accurate physical map of the entire United States. Nevertheless, the map is sold at the purely nominal price of 50 cents a copy. The great canyon through which the Colorado river flows for 280 miles was first visited by white men in 1640, by a detachment from Coronado's expedition under the immediate command of Garcia Lopez De Cardenas, but it is impossible to identify the part they visited, as the statement of the chronicler. "They arrived at the gorges of the river which . . . would seem to be more than three or four leagues wide." Hunters and ducks are both guaranteed an even break under the new regulations imposed by the division of fish and game of the Department of Natural Resources on commercial duck clubs. Thirty-eight commercial duck clubs have been granted permits to operate this year, and 46 operators have been licensed to work on these preserves. As a result of the strict regulations imposed by the fish and game division, the usual flood of complaints that generally pour into the office have been cut down to a minimum. B. D. Marx Greene, executive officer, insists. Among the few complaints received was one to the effect that after making reservations at a commercial club, a prospective shooter had his money returned because an accident had resulted in the fouling of a number of blinds, he was told by the club owner. Violation of the regulations which are given briefly here may result in the immediate cancellation of the permit to operate which is granted by the division of fish and game, and in this way hunters who seek their duck hunting on commercial clubs are protected and the division is assured that the clubs will co-operate in the enforcement of the game laws and the conservation of the game. Regulations provide that no club can guarantee a limit. Continual shooting at birds out of range will be considered a nuisance and result in the shooter being barred from the club. This protects birds and also the shooters who are eager to kill birds and not wound them without getting them. Shooters must be given satisfactory blinds and no shooter will be allowed to hunt at large when the blinds are full. Blinds must be within shooting distance of water and blinds must be placed a reasonable distance apart, this depending upon local conditions. Where clubs adjoin, no blinds are to be located within 70 yards of adjoining boundary, except by mutual agreement. Shooting days are limited to Sunday, Wednesday and Saturday, while opening and closing days of the seasan and legal holidays are additional days when shooting will be permitted. The San Francisco office of the di- vision has licensed 31 commercial clubs to date, and 40 operators have been granted permits. At the Sacramento office, one club and two operators have been issued licenses. In Los Angeles six clubs and four operators have secured the necessary papers to operate. End of Great Colossal Cave Never Has Been Found Rivalling the Mammoth cave of Kentucky is the Colossal cave located near the Old Spanish Trail route in Arizona. Located 26 miles from Tucson in the Rincon mountains, the road thereto turns to the left at Vall, leading across the river bottom and up the canyon for five miles to the mouth of the cave. The entrance to the cave is a small opening, scarcely four feet high. Once inside a large cavity is found. Strings have been stretched along the main passageways and platforms, boards and ladders make a trip into the interior comparatively easy. Many side openings, attractive because of their grotesque formations, appear, but visitors are warned against venturing into them without guides. Explorations lasting for days at a time have been made through this cave, but the termination has never been located. New passages are constantly being opened and explored, but it has been an almost impossible to determine the exact size of the cavern. The Pittsburg Pirates didn’t come as near to the world’s championship as Dempsey did in the seventh round. next 50 years several expeditions made the perilous passage of the canyon largely for adventure and photography, but in 1923 Col. C. H. Birdseye, with a federal geological survey party, made a topographic and geologic survey of the bottom and parts of the adjacent walls of the entire canyon with special reference to flood control and power development.
