School Will Assist In Education Week
Will Join Forces With American Legion in Observance
Education Week, an annual activity of the American commission of the American Legion, will be observed in several foreign countries, as well as in the United States during November, according to Thomas W. McManus of Bakersfield, chairman of the California committee from the World War veterans' organization which is handling the program for the week in conjunction with the school officials of the state.
The date for the American Education Week is November 7. McManus reports, and the extension of the effort to foreign countries was brought about through the co-operation of FIDAC, the inter-allied veterans' societies of which the American Legion is a member organization for the United States. McManus declares that the carrying out of the idea in foreign countries "will be another step toward promoting friendlier relations between our nation and the various other countries."
In addition to the three hundred odd posts of the American Legion in California and the schools, civic organizations, luncheon clubs and fraternal bodies will co-operate this year in the observance of American Education Week in this state.
The program of the week in the California schools consists of the following subjects, one for each day beginning Monday, November 7:
Health Day, when schools will emphasize hygiene and health habits, the public participating in a set program.
Home and School Day will be the occasion for the teacher to talk to the school about the home, telling the children how they can make better homes.
Know Your School Day is intended for the benefit of the parents, as the title suggests.
School Opportunity Day will stress particularly the opportunity which the school should offer the child.
Armistice Day, November 11, provides the opportunity for a program of the highest patriotic quality.
Community Day will show the value of the schools in the improvement of community life.
For God and Country Day, Sunday, November 13, is intended as an opportunity time for ministers of all denominations to address their audiences on the higher values of education and on the work of teachers and the schools.

Bootleg Booze Proves To Be Colored Water
There are tricks in every trade, and the erstwhile bootleger who demonstrates with potent samples of 100 proof strength and then cashed in on deliveries of colored water was being sought by at least five irate Fullerton citizens while police looked on and laughed.
Police caught the man in question following a complaint from one of his duped customers Friday evening, but he had completed his rounds and only a roll of bills, "which would choke an elephant," Chief T. K. Winter declared, remained as indication of his asserted nefarious pursuits.
Finding no evidence on which to hold the man and feeling that those who sought to purchase liquor had no room for complaint if they were bested in a deal outlawed by the Eighteenth amendment, police released the dealer in colored waters.
Authorities expressed the belief that with the present sentiment among his customers he would not venture into this district again for some time.
It is reported in press dispatches that bananas are prohibited in Soviet Russia. Doubtless the Red chiefs want to keep a corner on all the skin games themselves.
Attractive Exhibit At County Fairs
State Fish and Game Commission Shows “Forest Tragedy”
Visitors in attendance at county fairs throughout California will have an opportunity to see the division of fish and game exhibit, "The Forest Tragedy," that created such a fine impression at the state fair in Sacramento.
This exhibit has been turned into a travelling set and has so far been booked for three fairs: Ventura county, where it is now being shown; Tulare county, and the Fresno district fair, which starts September 26.
The exhibit, which was arranged by Captain Walter B. Sellmer of the patrol force of the division of fish and game, depicts in realistic fashion, the fate of a doe, slain wantonly by a thoughtless hunter and her two orphaned fawns, left helpless due to the untimely death of the mother.
The scene is staged in an ideal mountain fastness, where the doe has been shot down as she stopped to drink at a tiny spring in the tree-clad retreat. The fawns, failing to realize what has happened to the fallen mother, are looking at her helplessly, wondering why she does not arise to aid them in foraging for food.
The thousands who stood before this exhibit at Sacramento went away visibly impressed with the wanton waste and tragedy of the slaughter of does. This was the volced expression given by these visitors voluntarily to the deputies of the fish and game division who were in attendance at the exhibit.
All of the deputies were eager in their efforts to explain just what was depleted, and all declared that the exhibit had done a lot of good for the conservation of fish and game and had brought home a mighty powerful lesson in wild life protection.
Coolidge Sidetracks Extra Session Move
Young Birds Should Be Carefully Watched
Unless a close watch is kept on the young stock at this season of the year, they may receive a severe setback from an infestation of roundworms, tapeworms or colds, leaving them in prime condition for an attack of chickenpox later on. No cases of chickenpox have come to the attention of the writer, as yet, but it is approaching the season when it may be expected and, since the ultra sanitary surroundings are but little more immune than the unsanitary, the vitality of the birds, particularly the pullets, is the best insurance one can have. Considerable canker has shown up in certain flocks which is often a forerunner of chickenpox.
While there may be no relationship between the two, unquestionably a bird having an attack of canker is going to be more subject to chickenpox than one which has escaped.
Sanitation of surroundings and segregation of diseased birds will help wonderfully in disease prevention and maintenance of egg production. Every poultry plant should be equipped with a hospital unit, separate and removed from the main poultry plant, equipped with roosts, nests, feed hoppers, drinking fountain, etc., where birds may be comfortably placed that are out of condition. It is questionable as the amount of time one is justified in doctoring, but the mere fact that one source of infection is removed from the flock will aid in preventing further spread. Often times the bird so removed will recover with little or no attention.
Pullets, with combs showing a dry, shrivelled up appearance, are out of condition, caused in the most of cases by the presence of roundworms, or tapeworms. If, upon examination, the presence of these parasites is found, treatment for the same should follow.
The nicotine sulphate capsules for roundworms and kamala capsules for tapeworms are generally the most effective remedies. However, both treatments should not be given at the same time. Following either of these treatments, some form of milk product is desirable for building up the vitality.
The form in which the milk product is given does not make so much diffe-
by these visitors voluntarily to the deputies of the fish and game division who were in attendance at the exhibit.
All of the deputies were eager in their efforts to explain just what was depicted, and all declared that the exhibit had done a lot of good for the conservation of fish and game and had brought home a mighty powerful lesson in wild life protection.
Coolidge Sidetracks Extra Session Move
Proposals for a special session of congress have been sidetracked by President Coolidge. He also has been advised by Republican leaders here that there is no occasion for a special session of the Senate alone, and it was indicated at the White House that no call for one will be issued.
In reaching a definite decision against calling congress into session before the regular convening date in December, Mr. Coolidge has been guided by the advice of Senator Curtis and Representative Tilson, Republican leaders of the Senate and House, who have told him there will be sufficient time in the regular session convening in December to enact pending business.
So far as the Mississippi river flood situation is concerned, the President understands arrangements have been made to care for the relief work formed by engineers who are drafting a flood control program that they will be unable to report before November 15, or later.
While some senators had suggested a special session of the senate to thresh out the contests over the seats of Senator-elect Smith of Illinois and Vare of Pennsylvania; Mr. Coolidge has been advised that the Senate will have time to take these cases up and perhaps dispose of them before the Christmas holidays. Senate leaders do not expect to get to work on legislation pending action by the House on the tax reduction and appropriation bills in the early part of December.
The House ways and means committee will meet October 31 to begin consideration of the revenue problem, preparatory to framing a tax revision bill, and various House appropriations subcommittees will be at work well in advance of the December session on supply measures. It also is probable that the House and Senate committees which will have charge of flood legislation will get to work on that subject before the beginning of the session.
State Will Enforce Fish and Game Laws
"This should serve notice on all violators of the fish and game laws, that those who come before me will be dealt with severely in the future. The wild life of California is one of the state's greatest assets, and I am heartily in sympathy with the rigid enforcement of the laws existing for its protection."
With this declaration, Police Judge shrievelled up appearance, are out of condition, caused in the most cases by the presence of roundworms, or tapeworms.
The form in which the milk product is given does not make so much difference, but the purchaser should determine which supplies the total digestible nutrients the cheapest.
Southern California Athletic Activities
Rumors that Captain Morley Drury of the U.S.C. football team would be shifted to an end position from a half-backing job were definitely put to rest this week when Coach Howard Jones installed his huaky grid leader at quarterback. Drury played fullback in high school and as a Trojan freshman, and in two years of varsity work has officiated at halfback. His presence at quarter gives Jones a quartet of able ball-packers in Drury, Don Williams, Howard Elliott and Rocky Kemp. As Jones' system of play calls for the quarterback to carry the ball at least three times in four plays, this array of talent will be necessary.
Charlie Borah, national collegiate 100 and 220-yard dash champion, and A.A.U. 22-0 yard title holder, already is at work daily in preparation for another attack on Charlie Paddock's mark of 9.5 for the century. Borah, who is now in his third year at the U.S.C. college of dentistry, spends his spare time in the afternoon going through various exercises, and taking warm-up jogs on Bovard field. Dean Cromwell, Trojan track and field mentor, is keeping a close eye on his sprinting star to prevent overwork, and hopes to have Borah in shape for a 9.4 effort by the time track season officially gets under way.
The vicious long distance swimming bug at last has descended upon the collegiate world, and has centered its attack on the University of Southern California. As a result, entries are pouring in to Leo Calland, director of Intra-Mural sports, for the first annual Castle Rock lighthouse swim, which is to be staged October 8 over a two and one-half mile course. Calland expects at least 75 men to take part in the swim. A gold medal will be awarded to the winner of the event, and every other man to finish will receive a silver medal, regardless of finishing position.
A total of 138 college musicians answered the call for the "largest college band in the world," at the first turnout

The wild life of California is one of the state's greatest assets, and I am heartily in sympathy with the rigid enforcement of the laws existing for its protection."
With this declaration, Police Judge Daniel O'Brien of San Francisco sentenced John J. Ryan to serve 30 days in jail for having more than 100 wild ducks in his possession during closed season when he was arrested on August 25 by deputies of the Division of Fish and Game of the Department of Natural Resources.
Taking special interest in the prosecution of violations of the fish and game laws, District Attorney Matthew Brady, assigned Assistant District Attorney Harmon B. Skillin to the case, and the verdict of guilty and the jail sentence followed his able presentation of the facts.
I. Zellerbach, fish and game commissioner, expressed his gratification at the sentence, which he declares will have an excellent effect on the success of the conservation of wild life in California.
Most potato diseases are caused by microscopic parasites, principally fungi and macteria, but weather, soil and cultural conditions usually determine whether a disease becomes destructive or not. For this reason the weather is mistakenly sometimes said to cause the disease. The cause of another group of potato diseases is unknown, but they behave like infectious diseases, except that they are permanently perpetuated in the tubers when used as seed. Hence they are sometimes called degeneration diseases, or running out.
An average of 12 dozen marketable eggs a year from each hen should give a good return. Hens that produce less than 100 eggs a year barely pay their expenses.
A total of 138 college musicians answered the call for the "largest college band in the world" at the first turnout of the university's musical organization.
Harold Roberts, Trojan leader, is optimistic in his belief that he will have 175 musicians at the second turnout. The mammoth band will be equipped with snappy uniforms of the latest style, including knickers and colorful socks and sweaters.
Coach Howard Jones is thankful for sophomores. A bevy of second-year men will fill a total of between 6 and 10 gaps on the Trojan line caused by a wholesale graduation of veterans last June.
