Traffic Cops Active During Past Year
More Than $70,000 Collected in County in 12 Months
During the fiscal year of 1926-27, which ended on July 1, the Orange county state traffic squad, with Captain H. C. Meehan in charge, arrested 3695 persons, according to the report just completed by Meehan for his superior officer, Inspector Walter Greer. Fines collected totaled $70,024.09.
Although the figure representing the arrests seems large, it is pointed out that there were 8321 persons stopped during the year, and of this number only a little more than three-eights were placed under arrest. This fact bears out, officers say, that the Orange county squads' reputation for being "hard boiled" is not fair to the squad.
The report is believed to be the best in the history of Orange county, F. G. Yoder, state officer, who compiled it, said, and it will compare favorably with any squad in the state, not excluding the Los Angeles county squad, he intimated.
There were 2459 persons arrested during the year on speeding charges, but this is only 65.55 per cent of the number who were stopped by officers for speeding, the report shows. There were 3505 persons stopped for going too fast.
That speeding is not the only thing that traffic officers have to keep in mind while on the job is borne out by the fact that the report shows that 2274 persons were stopped for having lights that were not up to the standard and 348 of these were arrested, and that 1338 persons were stopped for other violations of the rules of the road, of which 443 were given tickets. Miscellaneous arrests for the year total 445 out of 1204 persons stopped, which include arrests for things other than traffic laws, it was said.
The report indicates that 144 persons, or 3.9 per cent of those arrested during the year, were given jail sentences for their deeds, the jail sentences run
The report indicates that 144 persons, or 3.9 per cent of those arrested during the year, were given jail sentences for their deeds, the jail sentences running from one to 20 days.
The total number of fines for the year was $70,024.09, according to the report, and the cost of operation by the squad was only $41,885.50. This shows a profit for the county and state of $28,138.59.
All of the fines collected were on traffic violations with the exception of $2056, it was said.
July of last year was the heaviest month for arrests on speeding charges, the report shows, when 456 persons were stopped and 311 of these were given tickets. July also produced the largest amount in fines, totaling $6696.50.
The smallest month of the year, so far as the speeder was concerned, was February of this year, when only 99 persons charged with speeding were arrested, but the month of November, 1926, showed the smallest amount of money collected in fines, which was $3450.
The report on file shows that the average fine for all arrests was $18.95.
But arresting motorists is not all the year 2562 persons were given work of the traffic officers. During driver's tests, and during the year officers collected $1228.86 in delinquent fines.

80,000 Boxes of Sunkist Fruit Shipped to European Ports
Export business on Sunkist oranges is now ranking in volume with sales of many of the larger domestic sales districts, according to the exchange orange sales department, and based on present bookings,August will probably be the banner month in the year's export program.
Exchange members are this year cashing in on the foreign outlets for their fruit which have been developed by years of effort on the part of the

Foreign markets, specially in Europe whent California oranges have gained a foothold over those from other sections upon large size fruit. The present as a quality product formerly insisted heavy exports of Valencias run mostly 2163 and 2523,twice as many fruits to The loss as the sizes to which Europeans were accustomed.
The enormous increase in the number of individual trade-marked Sunkist oranges distributed to newer markets this season, and the moderate price per fruit or per dozen because of the smaller sizes are helpful factors in building demand for the future.
Mutual disarmament is all right just so we don't scrap so many ships we won't have any to scrap with when they next scrap comes along.
Automobile Notes
Hundreds of motorists are learning this summer that an extensive vacation trip is not necessarily expensive. These motor tourists are numbered among the thousands who are making use of the auto camps and camp grounds. It is said that at least three-fourths of the tourists on the highways are camping out or using the many fine auto camps available.
Auto camps of California and along the Pacific highway from Mexico to Canada are hanging outthe S.R.O.sign nearly every night, furigatively speaking, says this outing information agency, and camping room is often at a premium in the community camp grounds along this route. This popularity is revealing.in view of fact that there are more than 500 recognized auto camps or camp grounds in California and at least 159 on the Pacific highway from Aashland,Ore.,to Vancouver,B.C.Practically all towns and communities of any size along main travelled highways now support an automobile camp.
Comfort.security and many other conveniences at the minimum prices are afforded in these established camp grounds, and the many accommodations often found are equal to allthe portable beds, electricity, gas, showers comforts of home.Clean cottages, comstoves or kitchens and piped water are amongthe accommodations found in practically all camps.
Many ofthe camps provide, bides necessary conveniences such camping luxuries as electric washing machines, grocery stores, barber shops, gas stations, cafes and soda fountains in connection.junitor service, towels blankets and other linen, and free private garages.Completely furnished,two-room bungalows with bath are found in many instances.

Excellent Market For Valencias
A continued good market for Valencia oranges is anticipated by the orange sales department, based on the excellent movement at this time and the improvement, also on the fact that there is ment on small sizes during the past but little more fruit left to go than was the case at this time last summer, when considerably more fruit could have been moved to advantage after September 1.
Exchange shippers have furnished a greater percentage of the supply of oranges during recent weeks, exchange shipments running well over 90 per cent of the total at times.
In round numbers, 10,000 cars of exchange Valencias have been sold to the middle of July, almost 2,500 cars more than to the same date last year. The f. o. b. average is approximately 25 cents per box higher to date than in 1926.
The average number of oranges per box for shipments of the first week in July was 234.6 compared with 203.9 for the same week last year.

States carried five passengers, the entire population of the nation could ride, according to figures. The estimate that there is a machine for every five persons in the country is from the department of commerce, in Washington, which also considers that one car is in operation for every 66 persons in the world. This is based on a world census of automobiles, showing 24,589,249 registered on January 1, 1927.
Canada and Hawaii rank second to the United States in proportion of automobiles to population, with one to every 11 persons.
Japan has only one automobile for every 1398 persons, while India, with one car registered for every 3,893 persons, has the smallest proportion of automobiles to population among the first 25 motorized countries of the world, the report shows.
Approximately 95 per cent of the 24,589,249 automobiles registered were of American origin, having been manufactured in the United States or in American-owned factories in Canada, or assembled in foreign branches of these factories.
