State Can Support 15,000,000 Persons
State Real Estate Commission States in Speech at Fullerton
That California, a state supporting 5,000,000 population at the present time, should have 15,000,000 persons within its boundaries, is the opinion of Stephen Barnson, state real estate commissioner, expressed in a talk at Fullerton recently.
To secure the additional population, Barnson advocated that the state of California set aside a sum of money for a nation-wide advertising campaign and create a state bureau of information to classify all the resources of the state, pointing out opportunities in every line of endeavor.
"It is just as necessary and reasonable for a state to advertise its resources and sell them to the users and to develop its potential wealth as it is for a city to do this or for a merchant to sell his wares," the commissioner asserted. "California most of all needs population to provide a market for factories and mills to develop our lands."
"We have splendid paved roads, bridges and other public works, but the per capita is heavy. That should be reduced by added population and wealth that comes with it.
"California today can better sustain 15,000,000 population than the 5,000,000 here. I mean by that we would all be more prosperous together and enjoy more fully the blessings of this land, and our per capita cost of living would be lessened."
LEGION NOTES
Coincidental with the San Francisco-Hawaiian islands flight project, Assistant Secretary of War F. Trubee Davison has sent a message to Dr. John F. Slavich, state commander of the American Legion of California, declaring that the "efforts of the American Legion to stimulate nation-wide interest in aviation should meet with all possible encouragement."
automobile, went first to Forest Home, where an inspection was made of the Robbins hatchery and farm. This place has been in operation for a number of years and is one of the attractions of this popular mountain resort.
Fish are reared in the hatchery and released in a number of ponds that extend down the canyon below the farm. Club members are permitted to fish and are charged a certain amount per fish caught. Water is diverted from the main stream and almost natural conditions are maintained.
The Dolly Varden Angling Club is the newest of the farms and angling clubs, and is reached after leaving Forest Home on the return trip from the resort to Redlands.
A hatchery similar to those operated by the State Fish and Game Commission is operated, as well as a series of holding ponds where fish are brought up to a size suitable to be released in the ponds operated by the club. These ponds are arranged in much the same way as the ponds at the Forest Home farm.
The Rainbow Angling Club operated in the Mill creek wash, a short distance below the Dolly Varden place and a few miles above Mentone, by Leigh Garnsey, is the most elaborate of the three. Garnsey has turned his fish culture over to Mr. Isaacs, formerly in charge of that work for the state of Idaho, and is getting excellent results.
Pools are arranged here for fishing, and the beginner starts in an easy one, while the more experienced angler is sent to a spot where it is more difficult to get the fish.
A visit to these farms is particularly interesting, as it shows the method of rearing fish for commercial purposes and shows also the possibilities of this as a new industry.
All trout are tagged as required by the Fish and Game Commission, and the commission looks with favor on the farms, as it relieves to a considerable extent the strain on the waters of the state much frequented by fishermen.
However, the eggs must be brought from outside of California for hatching in these farms and all ponds must be artificial, no natural stream beds being used, the commission has decreed.
The three farms mentioned above are easily reached by good roads out of Los Angeles through Redlands and U.S.C. Alumina Moved Head

In addition to asking that the California American Legion officials lend their efforts in making the projected trans-Pacific flights successful, Assistant Secretary Davison has appealed to the posts of the World war veterans' organization to begin local campaigns for the promotion throughout the state of landing fields for airplanes in the various California communities.
"I would like to see the map of the United States dotted with the marks which indicate airports; not in a haphazard fashion, but along scientifically, well thought out lines," Davison says in his message to State Commander Slavich. "Where the American Legion can be of invaluable service is to work for the creation of airports in cooperation with the government. In doing this, the Legion will not alone contribute toward aviation growth generally, but also toward the development of military aviation, because the same relationship that links commercial vessels and men of war exists between commercial and military aviation."
California's second ship load of captured German war trophies taken during the World war will soon arrive in Los Angeles and San Francisco, via the Panama canal, for distribution to the various communities and organizations of the state through the medium of the American Legion posts, according to word received from 'Adjutant-General R. E. Mittelstaedt of the California National Guard to James K. Flisk, state adjutant of the Legion. The first consignment of war trophies was distributed months back and because of the numerous requests from communities over the state, the additional consignment has been secured by General Mittelstaedt.
Golf and tennis tournaments for the World war veterans of California will be staged in August at Santa Barbara during the annual state convention of the American Legion there, according to State Adjutant James K. Flisk.
An 18-hole medal play golf tournament will be held on the course of the La Cumbre Country Club. Silver cups for high, gross and net scores will be presented to the winners of the tourney.
Winners of the singles and doubles championships of the California war veterans, together with the runners up in both singles and doubles, will also receive handsome trophies.
Boy Scouts from all parts of the state will have representation at a boy Scout and shows also the possibilities of this as a new industry.
All trout are tagged as required by the Fish and Game Commission, and the commission looks with favor on the farms, as it relieves to a considerable extent the strain on the waters of the state much frequented by fishermen.

The three farms mentioned above are easily reached by good roads out of Los Angeles through Redlands and Mentone.
The little boy who used to believe in Little Red Riding Hood and Tom Thumb has now grown up to accept as fact all the propaganda he reads about the situation in Europe and what we ought to do about it.
Anyhow, it's a lot more satisfactory to see the names Lindbergh and Chamberlain in the headlines than it was, Gray and Snyder.

Trout Farms Prove Popular on Coast
Domestic trout farms are becoming popular in California, particularly in the southern district where a number are operating. In San Bernardino county three of these farms where trout are propagated and distributed commercially are to be found within a few minutes ride of each other.
A recent inspection trip made of these farms by Commissioner R. H. Clock, B. D. Marx Greene, executive officer of the California Fish and Game Commission, and Charles S. Bauder, captain of patrol in the southern district, disclosed that many embryo fishermen are learning the rudiments of angling and getting the thrill of catching real trout as members of "angling clubs" maintained by the three institutions visited.

Convict Lake Area Mecca for Anglers
Famed for the variety of its fishing waters and the majesty of its scenery, the Rock Creek and Convict Lake areas are now claiming the attention of many fishermen and vacationists, according to the touring department of the National Automobile Club. The Owens river, which forms the eastern boundary of the area, winds through the lower end of Long valley and enters a deep gorge, where for more than 12 miles it runs and rising to a height of 12,245 feet, was named for one of the posse who was killed in the fight.
At "Tom's Place," where the main highway crosses Rock creek, a good mountain lateral is had into the back country, reaching lower Rock creek lake. Here and also in the long chain of lakes above, may be found excellent trout fishing. Nearby are Hilton lakes, reached by a good trail.
