Booklet Advertises Southern California This Section Boosted in Newspaper Publication Just Out One of the most valuable pieces of California publicity and advertising ever attempted is the "Rates and Market Data" booklet just issued by the California Newspaper Publishers' Association. This publication of over 200 pages gives detailed information about Central and Southern California newspapers, members of the association and the fields they cover. Facts about each county are followed by statistical information concerning each town and city and covering population, character of population, schools, churches, banks, theaters, principal industries, manufacturing establishments and the number of retail outlets for each line of goods. This presents a staggering mass of information about Central and Southern California designed to attract national advertisers into this field. Over six months' time was required to compile this information in the publishers' association office which conceived the publication as a method for effectively selling this field to national advertisers. No similar publication has ever been attempted in the United States. Similar data has been compiled for groups of large cities, for cities supporting daily newspapers and by individual cities, but this is the first time that complete markets data has ever been gathered for one entire territory, stretching 510 miles from Santa Cruz to Yuma, Ariz., and 315 miles from Fresno to San Diego. Tabulation of advertising rates and mechanical information on daily and weekly newspapers in the territory covered by the association completes the publication into a compendium of information that is attracting wide attention from advertising agencies. This publication will be distributed to the leading advertising agencies of the United States and to prominent national advertisers, to focus their attention to this field. The time was announced as 1:26 when it was established May 14, but rules state that official time is recorded at the mark caught by two of the three head timers. Two of these had 1:25.8 and the third 1:26. The later time has been certified to Coach Dean Cromwell considers the lowering of this record from 1:27.4 the outsanding event on the Trojan 1927 schedule. Willie Lewis, Hershel Smith, Ed House and Charles Borah, all eligible varsity men, made the mark in a dual meet with the Los Angeles Athletic Club team. Six university records were lowered and one equalled at the University of Southern California during the past track and field season. The pole vault mark was raised to 13 feet 9½ inches by Lee Barnes, the high jump boosted to 6 feet 5-16 inches by Henry Coggeshall, and the broad jump record stretched to 24 feet 7 inches by Jesse Hill. The other three new records were in relays. Willie Lewis, Herschel Smith, Ed House and Charles Borah cut the 880-yard relay mark down to 1:25.8, Lewis, Smith, and Charles Sauers made the 440-yard relay record 41.6 seconds, and Harold Lovejoy, Percy Wallace, Charles Sauers and Bruce Smith made the mile relay record 3:19.6. Charles Borah equalled the Trojan 100 yards record when he ran 9.6 seconds. The mark was established by Howard Drew in 1914 and equaled by Charles Paddock in 1921. The order took effect June 15. In the Eldorado, Stanislaus, Sierra, Sequola, Inyo and Mono national forests the "no smoking" order will apply only to areas around 7500 feet or less in elevation and not to the high Sierra region. In Southern California, the Angeles, Cleveland, San Bernardino and Santa Barbara national forests are already closed to smoking. This regulation will remain in effect until the fall rains eliminate the fire hazard. Careless smokers, according to the district forester, are the greatest of the many fire menaces to the fields and forests of California. Burning matches and tobacco thrown aside last year by thoughtless smokers started no less than 826 brush and forest fires in the state and caused untold damage to timber, watershed cover, grazing land and farm crops and improvements. A number of these fires swept over more than 50,000 acres, burned several resorts and mining towns and also caused loss of human life. "I am a smoker myself," said Mr. Show, "and fully appreciate the value of a good cigarette or pipe. But I firmly believe that where the preservation of the valuable timber forests of the state is at stake, personal pleasures should take second place. It is not the purpose of the forest service to attempt to restrict the privileges of smokers and we welcome them to the national forests with the hundreds of thousands of other people who annually come to these great summer recreation grounds. But if they smoke in the forests, they must learn to smoke only in such places as are designated; that is, at improved camps and places of human habitation." In 1926 we had "no smoking" regulations. 10 feet Westerly from the South-easterly corner thereof; thence Northerly parallel to the Easterly line of said Vineyard Lot 91.85 feet to the Southerly line of a tract of land conveyed to the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, a corporation, by deed recorded in Book 41, page 372 of Deeds. It is not the purpose of the forest service to attempt to restrict the privileges of smokers and we welcome them to the national forests with the hundreds of thousands of other people who annually come to these great summer recreation grounds. But if they smoke in the forests, they must learn to smoke only in such places as are designated; that is, at improved camps and places of human habitation. "In 1926 we had 'no smoking' regulations in force in many national forests of the state and through the fine spirit of co-operation on the part of the public we were able to materially reduce fire losses from such causes. But there were some people who insisted on smoking even in hazardous fire areas. In one national forest we had 108 court cases for violation of the 'no smoking' order, with fines ranging from $10 to $50 and totaling $2140. The protection of our forests and watershed brush fields from fire during the dry summer months is at best a most difficult problem, and we look to people who enter these federal areas for business or pleasure to consider seriously the fire prevention regulations in force and conduct themselves accordingly."
