Productive Capacity Increased Forty-Fold What Electrical Energy Is Doing for Industrial World The people of the United States, because of their willingness to adopt and make use of modern machinery, have increased their productive capacity more than forty-fold. This fact was brought out in the report made last evening by R. H. Ballard, chairman of the public policy committee of the National Electric Light Association, at its convention in Atlantic City. Electricity, according to the report, has been the greatest contributing factor in bringing about this result. "The electric light and power industry," the report continued, "has first of all, an unbounded faith in the growth an destability of the United States and its institutions." "We believe in the conservation of natural resources and stand pledged to develop water power wherever it is possible to do so without the undertaking becoming burdensome, and also to yoke the other resources of nature, such as coal and oil, more effectively to the service of mankind. "We look upon the Federal Water Power act as far-sighted and constructive legislation, and in justice to those who have submitted to its rules and regulations, contend that there should be no special legislation or other action, weakening and circumventing that measure. "We believe in state regulation of electric rates and service, but we hold that regulation does not embrace management. In the interest of efficiency and better service, we suggest greater uniformity in regulatory practices and laws, and as for the commissions, we submit that the highest standard of character and ability in their membership is most desirable. "We hold that national interests dictate the unrestricted flow of electricity throughout the country, the wider practice of interconnection and generating facilities and the interchange of energy, because of the economies thereby made possible. "Considering its advantages, electricity is cheap at any price. Nevertheless, we urge that by means of research, engineering, commercial and financial skill, co-ordination of resources, and by active co-operation with all other agencies in a position to aid, greater output be derived from present investment so that what is now remarkably cheap may become cheaper. We have already saved millions to industry and released many millions more for productive effort; we should seek to save still more, so that our industry may stand out in history as a notable example of American genius and enterprise dedicated to public service and justifying the faith bestowed upon it by countless admirers and investors." Kiddie Horse Show At County Fair A "kiddie horse show" with Orange county girls and boys displaying their horses in their various paces, will be a feature of the 1927 fair. If the preliminary arrangements of the fair association mature. The association expects to offer a special set of prizes for the youthful equestrians and will limit the class to both local horses and riders. In order to stimulate interest in this feature, the fair association has arranged with the Orange County Riding Academy, now located at the fair grounds, to provide instructions for the youngsters who agree to participate in the show, the fair association agreeing to pay half of the price of the lessons. All entrants who, in the judgment of the management, show sufficient progress to enter the feature during the fair will be permitted to continue their lessons during the summer. Entry in this feature may be made at once and a training class will be established as soon as possible, so that the participants will secure advantage of this co-operative arrangement. By this combination the fair gains a very desirable feature, and many Orange county youngsters will have the opportunity of learning to ride at half price during their summer vacation. Smashing all existing records for automobile driving from ocean to ocean, Louis B. Miller, San Francisco business man, in a Chrysler Imperial "80" phaeton rolled into Los Angeles at 9:59 o'clock Tuesday morning of last week, having completed a round trip record-breaking run from San Francisco to New York and back to Los Angeles. Miller established two new transcontinental records. He broke the old record for elapsed time from San Francisco to New York by a margin of 3 hours and 15 minutes, having covered the distance of 3385 miles in 79 hours and 55 minutes. Pausing just one minute in New York, he set out on the return trip with Los Angeles as his destination. He covered the east to west route in 88 hours. Miller's total elapsed time trip was 167 hours and 54 minutes less than seven days, in a Chrysler Imperial "80" phaeton. Intensive education in safety is now reaching at least 350,000 children in schools of the 13 southeastern counties. It was estimated at a dinner meeting of junior high school safety committee representatives recently held. It was pointed out that the safety education inaugurated in many junior high schools of the Southland about two years ago is now established in these institutions in practically all the principal cities of this section. More than 75,000 children in the junior high schools alone are now being instructed through various means, in safety principles, it is considered. The history of safety work in Southern California schools is remarkable in its progress and it is far ahead of like endeavors in any other section of the United States. In the interests of public safety, the Automobile Club of Southern California sought the cooperation of boards of education of various southern cities and counties more than five years ago to initiate safety education in the elementary schools. These efforts were successful and soon a system of student committees to direct child pedestrian traffic across streets near schools and to promote safety in the buildings and on playgrounds were established. Safety was also incorporated in classrooms through correlation with arithmetic, drama, nature study, language, mechanical training, art and other studies, so that now this plan of instilling safety in young minds is widespread throughout the schools of this section. School systems of even the smallest towns have adopted the work enthusiastically, and splendid progress is reported from all sections. Miller's total elapsed time for the round trip was 167 hours and 59 minutes. Just one minute less than seven days. This establishes a record unique in long distance automobile driving, nearly 7000 miles in less than a week. He stated that his trip was undertaken as a demonstration of the safety of night driving with a new headlight, the Ico-Ryan-Lite, recently developed by Walter D'Arcy Ryan, which is said to give long range, non-glaring road illumination. Miller was met in Los Angeles at the termination of his run in front of the Western Auto Supply Company headquarters, by Hal Baker, sales manager, exhaustion of stocks in certain distributing markets, and by a shortage of supply and advancing prices upon other varieties of beans and grains. A survey of the total acreage planted to regular and baby lima beans in California on irrigated and unirrigated lands has been compiled by the state association. It shows the following: Sacramento valley, 7500 acres of baby limas, mostly irrigated. Tracy and vicinity, 4000 acres baby limas, mostly irrigated. Modesto-Turlock district, 5200 acres baby limas, mostly irrigated. Santa Barbara county, 237 acres regular limas, irrigated; 7417 acres regular limas on dry land; 4950 acres baby limas, mostly irrigated. Ventura county, 28,325 acres regular limas, irrigated; 27,213 acres regular limas on dry land; 750 acres baby limas, mostly irrigated. Los Angeles county, 180 acres regular limas, irrigated; 1070 acres regular limas on dry land; 10,500 acres baby limas, mostly irrigated. Orange county, 14,520 acres regular limas, irrigated; 11,396 acres regular limas on dry land; 150 acres baby limas, irrigated. San Diego county, 650 acres regular limas, irrigated; 8421 acres regular limas on dry land; 200 acres baby limas irrigated. Riverside county, 250 acres baby limas, mostly irrigated. In Ventura and Santa Barbara counties the survey shows a slightly smaller acreage has been planted to regular limas than in 1926, but there is a somewhat larger acreage planted this year in Orange and San Diego counties, so that the total acreage of regular limas is about the same as last year. However, the acreage planted to baby limas this season in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara county is much less than last year, with minor changes up or down in other districts; with the result that the total acreage planted to baby limas of the 1927 crop in California is between 28 per cent and 30 per cent less and Mrs. L. The only special equipment on the record-breaking car was a pair of the Ico-Ryan-Lite headlights, which Miller credits with being responsible for the very fast time made by his car. He stated that he found the lights gave ample range of illumination without glare dangerous to approaching drivers. "I attribute much of the success of my trip," he said. "to the fact that the Ico-Ryan-Lites permitted me to maintain high speed at night without eyestrain or dangerous fatigue." investment, depreciation and other hidden costs may be figured. Also the income is secured, so that in making the final annual summary the grower is able to find not only his cost of production, the cost per pound for every operation carried on, but also the income from the business as well as the net profit over and above all expenses. As mentioned before, all figures secured are purely confidential, and any results which are published are for the whole group and never for any one individual. Lima bean growers who are interested in carrying on this study, starting next fall can get further information at the farm advisor's office, Santa Ana. Ginghamts come in so many different attractive patterns that there is a wide variety from which to choose, from the plainer, thicker kinds for aprons or morning house dresses, to the thin, dainty tissue ginghams for afternoon dresses. Plaid ginghams are coming back in many pleasing designs. This week, Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25, the citrus growers of Southern California are holding a two-day institute and pest control school, according to Dr. J. R. Schofield, chairman of the farm bureau citrus growers' department. This activity is being held at the Citrus Union high school in Glendora-Azusa district, which may be reached by auto through Puente and north to Azusa, and thence east on the Foothill boulevard a short distance towards Glendora. Subjects being discussed are: Citrus orchard cultivation, irrigation, cost of producing oranges, effect of boron on citrus trees, control of red scale by means of spraying followed by fumigation, the black scale situation in Los Angeles county, red spider control, citrus pest control in Orange county, effect of oil sprays on keeping qualities of oranges, and the present status of the white fly eradication program. These subjects will be discussed by specialists and experts, who have been studying the specific problems of the citrus growers. A detailed program may be secured from the farm advisor's office, Hall of Records. Will Study Cost of Raising Lima Beans By RAYMOND ELLIS, Assistant Farm Advisor The agricultural extension service of California has been carrying on cost of production studies for various crops of the state for the past two or three years. From these studies they have gotten some very valuable figures upon which the growers are able to base their future actions. The grower may, by comparing his costs and income with the average, see where he can improve his status by changing certain operations. Here in Orange county the citrus and poultrymen are already studying their farm business and apparently are making much headway. One of our very important crops, which has not been studied yet, is lima beans. Therefore, the farm advisor's office is contemplating carrying on this study, providing a sufficient number of growers is found who wish to cooperate. The system used is as follows: Each grower who is co-operating is sent an expense sheet at the beginning of every month, on which sheet he puts all of his expenses for the month, including such items as labor, seed, water, etc. This sheet is returned to the farm advisor at the end of each month, where all sheets are summarized. Each grower is given a number, so that all his figures are confidential, and no mention is ever made of an owner's name in connection with his business. Besides the expense sheets mentioned above, an inventory of land and equipment is also taken so that interest on This Coming Saturday Night We Close Our Doors Now---Take Your Shoes Our Store for $2.45 Hundreds of Others for 10c, 45c Never Again a Chance Like this. Where Complete Stocks of Shoes Are Carried at Kafateria Sho 109 West Center Wire Bracing Cheap; Easy Tree Insurance Good trees mean dollars in the pocketbook and broken trees are a distinct liability. In many instances in the county weak deciduous and walnut trees are showing up, according to H. E. Wahlberg, farm advisor, as is always the case about this time of the year. Such trees should have been wire braced during the winter, but it is never too late. Summer wire bracing is easier in that the wood is soft and screw-eyes can be set in with ease, but it is more difficult because limbs are down and may need lifting before the wires are fastened. Also, foliage interferes with clear vision. Props require lots of money, are distinctly temporary and must be put in position every year. A wire brace, once properly installed, is good for many years and costs but very little more in the first place. In later years a great saving is made, as no labor is required. The loss of one tree in a 60-foot planting of walnuts means approximately 8 per cent of the earning capacity of the acre gone. The loss of one deciduous tree means 2 or 3 per cent of the earning capacity gone. It takes years to grow a big tree. A little neglect in wire bracing will break it down in one season. The University of California published a circular, Number 244, on the subject, "Wire Bracing of Fruit Trees." Strengths of materials, kinds of screew-eyes and other supplies and systems of bracing are described. Copies of this circular may be obtained by writing the office of the farm advisor, Hall of Records, Sailta Ana. Protect your grove from breakage before it is too late. STATE REUNIONS Four great summer picnic reunions are being announced for Bixby park, Long Beach, under the auspices of the state organizations. The Pennsylvaniaians will lead off Saturday, July 16, and Illinois will follow July 23. Nebraska's contingent will use Saturday, July 30, and Saturday, August 13, the Iowaans, 100,000 strong will rally. As the picnickers will come in from hundreds of miles around, this advance notice will enable them to make their plans to meet the old home state neighbors. Each state will offer all the picnic attractions and will open county registers, supply souvenir badges and coffee. All programs will follow the basket dinner hour. Every former resident of the state is always welcome. The soviets ask for a little more time in order that their agents may wind up their business in London.
