Senator Smoot, chairman of the senate finance committee, announced after a visit at the White House. The necessity for action upon deficiency appropriation bills, tax reduction, election contests and Mississippi flood rehabilitation legislation and farm relief has caused the decision. Smoot said. The first business before the extra session will be the deficiency appropriation bill, killed in a fillbuster during the closing moments of last session. This prevented the government from receiving $20,000,000 of necessary appropriation funds. The election contests of Senator-elect Vare, Republican, Pennsylvania, and Senator-elect Smith, Republican, Illinois, also will have to be disposed of, and are expected to lead to considerable debate. Smoot said his finance committee would meet in joint session with the house ways and means committee in September to frame a new tax reduction bill for presentation to the house as soon as the special session meets. Smoot said he believed the bill would carry $300,000,000 reduction. The call for the special session will not be sent out by President Coolidge for some time yet. Under law, the President can wait until three weeks before the time of convening to issue his call. The regular session would open normally in December. Smoot's announcement confirmed a United Press dispatch of several weeks ago, stating that Republican leaders and Mr. Coolidge had decided on a special session. Murray, president of the Sunlite Products Company, 407 South Claudina street, who was recently convicted on a charge of obtaining money under false pretenses, was scheduled to be sentenced by a San Bernardino court today. The attorneys, however, announced that they would appeal the case. The cheif complaining witness was Mrs. Elsie N. Rollins of Redlands, who testified that Murray had told her that the firm's plant here was a flourishing business. Later investigation proved that the plant had not been running since September, Mrs. Rollins said. Ernost Glelow, 307 North Janas street, and William Lake, 620 North Los Angeles, also testified against Murray. Murray denied the accusations, claiming that the firm was in good financial standing and that the stock was of the value represented. Murray announced in Santa Ana recently that his company has closed a deal for the purchase of property there and would erect a large factory on the site. It is alleged. Policemen Interrupt Old-Time Cock Fight In a spectacular raid on the Emery Issue, northwest of Fullerton, Sunday afternoon, deputy sheriffs and Fullerton officers dispersed a crowd of some 200 persons who had gathered to watch a cock fight, and detained six men. Wildest panic ensued when the presence of the eight officers was discovered. One man was nearly drowned when he fell into a large pool of water in an endeavor to escape. He was pulled out by Sergeant James Pearson and allowed to go home. Dick Louis of Los Angeles, asserted to be one of the promoters of the fight, was arrested on a charge of possession of liquor and brought to the Fullerton city jail. The other five men, Sento Haro and Otto Sontz, of Los Angeles, and Rio Morreno, Joe Louez and Otto Marteno, of Fullerton, were brought to the Fullerton jail but were released pending the filing of charges against them. According to Fullerton officers, a warrant will be sworn out today against a rancher living near Santa Ana. The rancher is said to have been active in promoting the contests. Some 50 roosters had been brought to the place for the fight, and of this number 30 were dead when officers arrived. A quantity of liquor and a number of steel spurs were found. Soft drink and hot dog stands had been erected on the grounds Ask Us for Prices on Job Work S.Q.R. In 1876, a school executive declared, not less than 42 per cent of public school teachers were men. Today, only 15 per cent are men, and their number is decreasing. The superintendent was commenting on an article that appeared in a recent issue of The Nation, to the effect that the public school teacher looking for a job must cultivate a taste for humble pie. Among things listed on the "verbatum" list in small town districts are love, dancing, abbreviated dresses, gentlemen company, card playing, smoking, and other things unbecoming a woman educator, according to the writer in The Nation. A growing apathy on the part of young college men and women toward teaching, due in a measure to the many "don't" that have been thrown about the profession, have forced large districts to discard antiquated rules that not only kept out good teachers, but reflected upon the self-respect of those in the system. Typical of these small town contracts, which the teacher is expected to spend her week-ends in the community, devoting part of her time to Sunday school work, is the following, offered a woman teacher in North Carolina, and quoted by the writer in The Nation. In addition to the usual stipulations regarding certification, loss of pay while sick, it contained the following clauses: "I promise to take a vital interest in all phases of Sunday school work, do nothing out of my time services and money of the board of supervisors. An appropriation of $1000 was made to be used for geographic survey of the Santa Ana river, to work in co-operation with the government. Miss Margaret Livingston, county librarian, was allowed to attend the convention of the California Library Association and be allowed her actual expenses. It was ordered to instruct the engineer of the tri-counties flood control to discontinue spreading the waters of the tributaries of the Santa Ana river until water reaches Chapman Street bridge, Orange county, California. It was ordered that the Southern California Edison Electric Company be instructed to install lights at Buena Park, in accordance with recommendation of the Chamber of Commerce of Buena Park. Bids for the purchase of Laguna Beach school district bonds in the sum of $124,000 will be received up to 11 a.m., June 28, 1927. A lot of fellows are going to be more careful from now on about leaving any picture wire lying loose around the house. SOUTHLAND LEADS Southern California is substantially richer than any other area of its size in the world. It has more income per person than the average for the United States. Its savings deposits for each person average more than twice as much as the average for the United States. Southern California, for which the figures were made, includes the 10 southern counties. They are San Luis Obispo, Kern, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego and Imperial. The facts on the wealth were obtained from several sources. The income figure is from a fact finding agency of unimpeachable reputation. The data on savings was obtained by dividing the population of Los Angeles into the total amount of savings deposits in the Los Angeles banks. The income for each person is: Southern California,$844 a year The United States,$750 a year The margin of $74 for each person gives a margin of approximately $300 per family. The arbitrary figure of four is taken for the typical family size. The difference of $300 per family in income, over a period of years, finds expression in many material things. One thing that practically embraces all others is the savings deposits. The deposits for Los Angeles and for the United States follow: Average per person for Los Angeles,$436. Average per person for United States,$211. It will be noted that $14 has to be added to twice the figure for the United States to bring the amount up to the Los Angeles average. $65 will buy you a good practice piano. Pay $1 per week. In addition to the usual stipulations regarding certification, loss of pay while sick, it contained the following clauses: "I promise to take a vital interest in all phases of Sunday school work, donating of my time, service, and money without stint for the uplift and benefit of the community." "I promise to abstain from all dancing, immodest dressing, and any other conduct unbecoming a teacher and a lady." "I promise not to go out with any young men, except insofar as it may be necessary to stimulate Sunday school work." "I promise not to fall in love, to become engaged or secretly married." "I promise to remain in the dormitory or on the school grounds when not actively engaged in school or church work elsewhere." "I promise not to encourage or tolerate the least familiarity on the part of any of my boy pupils." "I promise to sleep at least eight hours a night, to eat carefully, and to take every precaution to keep in the best of health and spirits in order that I may be better able to render efficient service to my pupils." "I promise to remember that I owe a duty to the townspeople who are paying me my wages, that I owe respect to the school board and the superintendent that hired me, and that I shall consider myself at all times the willing servant of the school board and the townspeople, and that I shall cooperate with them to the limit of my ability in any movement aimed at the betterment of the town, the pupils, or the schools." Contracts of this nature serve to lessen the self-respect of individual teachers, as well to make them the butt of ridicule, as already evidenced on the vaudeville stage and in the funny pages of metropolitan dailies. TALL FIGURES According to well authenticated reports, the cost of the proposed dam at Prado will be not less than $8,000,000. The fee of a certain eminent engineer who has been suggested to assume control of the work is the "usual charge" made under like circumstances, which it is found, is 0 per cent, or $480,000. These things run into money. The supervisors are doing well to give these matters careful consideration before putting the county to this expense.
