Over-Production in Grapefruit Industry Take Inventory and Plan to Meet Marketing Problem "There is sufficient grapefruit acreage now planted and rapidly coming into production in California and Arizona to supply 6000 carloads annually or almost three and a half times the grapefruit consumption of the West at the present time," said Paul Armstrong, assistant general manager of the California Fruit Growers' Exchange, reporting to the board of directors of that organization the results of his recent investigation of the grapefruit situation in the Southwest. There are said to be approximately 6000 acres of grapefruit in the Imperial valley, 100 in Coachella, 1000 in the Yuma messa, and 700 around Phoenix, which together with the scattering acreage in other counties of California, totals over 12,000 acres. At a production of 200 boxes to the acres (which is conservative), the present acreage will supply 2,400,000 boxes, or 6000 cars. This compares with consumption in the states west of the Rocky mountains, which is the natural market for California and Arizona grapefruit, of only 1750 cars. "The considerable recent planting in these proven areas of the so-called 'desert' grapefruit, which is unquestionably of satisfactory quality and productivity, is changing the grapefruit map of the West," stated Mr. Armstrong. "Heretofore production has been exceedingly small and better grades at least of California grapefruit have been readily sold in the markets of this and other Pacific coast states with a relatively small quantity going to eastern markets, and that usually at a time when fruit from Florida and other sources was not in season." The exchange official quoted statistics showing that Texas has 50,000 acres of grapefruit, 96 per cent of which is not yet in bearing, Florida, the department in the farm bureau, cooperating with a home demonstration agent from the university. The highest praise was accorded the work performed by these agents in building up the health, comfort and happiness of the farm home. Some of the projects shown the delegates were labor-saving devices in the home; kitchen arrangement to save steps; improved beds for better rest; clothes construction and selection; better nutrition for all members of the family, particularly the children, and home furnishings. The farm advisors in the different counties demonstrated the cost studies carried on for grapes, poultry, dairying, peaches and apricots. By means of cost studies, the individual grower was able to analyze his own business at the end of the year and compare it with the average of the industry. Production cost studies are being adopted by a larger number of growers each year, but still the number is comparatively small. It was pointed out that agriculture in California represents an investment of $3,000,000,000, with business income of $300,000,000 per year, and yet this industry maintained less bookkeeping and business analysis than any other industry of equal proportion. In fact, less than 5 per cent of the farmers of the state could intelligently analyze their individual enterprises from accurate records. The Orange county delegates came back home with an earnest plea to Orange county farmers to actively encourage the junior agricultural club movement, because it will develop the agricultural leaders of tomorrow; to investigate the opportunity for home improvement in its various phases, and give closer attention to the study of the farm business from an economic standpoint. The farm advisor is prepared to help the individual farmer in the analysis of his business. Control of Codling Moth Under Way The intensive campaign for the control of codling moth worm in Orange county, walnut groves will be formally opened tomorrow at 10 a.m. at a mass meeting of growers, according to H. E. Wahlberg, farm advisor. The field meeting is being arranged by the agricultural extension service and the horticultural commission for the purpose of acquainting all walnut growers with the present status of the codling moth infestation in local walnut groves. The warm weather is increasing the deposit of eggs on the nuts, and indications in some groves point to the need for control spraying in the next week or so. Inspectors from the horticultural office are constantly in the groves now, ascertainting the degree of infestation and advising with growers concerning control measures for this season. Prof. Ralph H. Smith, entomologist of the citrus experiment station, Riverside, who is now handling codling moth investigations, will be the principal speaker. Professor Smith has done probably more work on codling moth research than any other individual in the country. He will explain the life cycle of the insect and best methods of control. W. H. Wright, deputy horticultural commissioner, will report on the findings of the inspectors in the different walnut sections of Orange county. Specimens of eggs and different stages of the codling moth life cycle will be shown so that growers may know what the pest looks like in every stage of its growth and development. A high powered spra youfit will be on the ground to demonstrate the kind and amount of materials used in control measures and how best applied. All growers are urged to attend, says Farm Advisor Wahlberg. The field meeting will be held at the Maubury ranch, Tustin, corner Tustin avenue and Fourth street. The time is Friday, May 27, at 10 a.m. Fatal Motor Accidents Increase 17 Per Cent Fatal accidents increased 17 per cent in the first two months of this year as compared with the same period of 1926, according to official compilations. The figures gathered from cities of more than 100,000 population show 876 deaths for the two months of 1927 and 741 in 1926. Weather conditions have a marked effect on totals during the winter months, so that the figures do not accurately reveal the trend for the year, according to the report. In 1926, total wages were low during the agricultural leaders of tomorrow, to investigate the opportunity for home improvement in its various phases, and give closer attention to the study of the farm business from an economic standpoint. The farm advisor is prepared to help the individual farmer in the analysis of his business. In a time when farmers are establishing farms for the first logical outlet for the increasing volume of grapefruit produced here. Consumption in this section is estimated at five and one-half grapefruit per person per year, which tallies closely with the national capita consumption. "The history of agriculture the world over shows that marketing is the last factor in success to be given consideration," concluded Mr. Armstrong. "It is true that fears of over-production are frequently unfounded and increasing crops are absorbed through substantial increases in consumption or a shifting of production centers. Nevertheless, it can do no harm and should be of some benefit to growers and prospective growers of grapefruit to take inventory and, if the course ahead is not smooth sailing, the present is none too soon to take account of things and lay plans to meet the situation. These facts are not given with the thought of discouraging enthusiasm or proper expansion. It is not necessarily a mark of pessimism to face the facts as we know them, and the justification of this analysis is the hope that through it grapefruit growers in these newly planted areas will be apprized of their marketing problem before it is definitely upon them and thereby permit them through co-operative effort and joint action to promote a public and trade appreciation of their delicious and agriculturally leaders of tomorrow." Delegates Back From Bureau Conference By A. W. MILLER, Yorba Linda Two hundred and fifty farm bureau delegates from the 42 agricultural counties of California have just returned to their homes from a most instructive and inspirational traveling conference that visited 10 San Joaquin counties where agricultural extension service and farm bureau activities were studied first hand. The delegates from Orange county were W. F. Coulter, Fullerton; A. W. Miller, Yorba Linda, and H. E. Wahlberg, farm advisor. The counties included in the conference itinerary were: Contra Costa, Stanislaus, Alameda, Kings, Merced, Madera, Fresno, Tulare, and Kern. In each of these counties stops were made to see typical farm and farm home activities as influenced by the agricultural extension service and farm bureau. The three outstanding projects reported by the delegates from Orange county were the splendid work accomplished by the junior agricultural clubs, the home demonstration service and the farm economic studies. The junior agricultural clubs conducted by the agricultural extension service were the center of interest in every county. The boys and girls engaged in the construction work showed evidence of splendid training in the various lines adopted, such as stock judging, poultry culling, rabbit raising, self improvement, and other projects. Every county visited had its home fatal accidents increased 17 per cent in the first two months of this year as compared with the same period of 1926, according to official compilations. The figures gathered from cities of more than 100,000 population show 876 deaths for the two months of 1927 and 741 in 1926. Weather conditions have a marked effect on totals during the winter months, so that the figures do not accurately reveal the trend for the year, according to the report. In 1926 the totals were very low during the winter, yet the year showed an increase. Alsike clover is an especially valuable crop on wet lands, not only because it will grow where there is plenty of water, but also because it will endure a certain amount of overflow without damage. No definite statements can be made in regard to the length of time alsike clover can be overflowed, especially at different stages of growth, but the experience of bottom-land farmers in widely separated sections has shown that a 1-year-old stand may remain under water for several days, or in winter and early spring even for several weeks without being killed. Insects are always raising trouble. The bureau of entomology during the past few years, however, has been using insects to fight insects. A number of insects which live as parasites on the gypsy moth have been imported into this country, in order to check the spread of that insect which destroys many trees and garden plants. The entomologists have discovered, however, that some of the parasites which in turn prey on the parasites have seriously interfered with the establishment of these enemies of the gypsy moth. Proper attention to reforesting rough lands unsuited to agriculture, to maintaining good forest cover at the headwaters of rivers, and to the prevention of rapid run-off on all sloping farms would aid materially in the problem of flood control, says the United States department of agriculture. The Trojans left Los Angeles facing the fact that Stanford university, conquerors of Southern California in a dual meet, are favored to take the title away from them this year. But they also realized that they have a splendid chance of winning second, and an outside chance of beating their keen rivals, the Cardinals. Coach Dean Cromwell has won himself much prestige in the east by his dual victories of 1925 and 1926. It is on the head-work of this great coach that the Southern Californians base their hopes of victory. Missing from this year's team are three men who were the major reasons for Southern California victories in the last two seasons. Bud Houser, the weight star, brought the Trojans nine points in 1925 and ten points in 1926. Kenneth Grumbles and Leighton Dye low and hard hurdler, respectively, accounted for five points in each previous meet. Both their points and their indomitable spirit will be missed. But Cromwell has one man this year who will go a long way toward taking Houser's place, at least. He is Charles Borah, the spinner. Borah skyrocketed into fame last July by winning the nation 100 yards title from such veterans as Jackson Sholtz and Chet Bowman. Previously he had pushed Charley Paddock into a new world's 100-yard record, a mark that Paddock himself admits that Borah should rightfully share with him. This season, Borah has tied the record of 9.5 seconds in the century, and has run 21.1 seconds in the furlong, although he has never been pushed in the latter race. Edgar House, captain of the Trojans and a great spinner, himself, along with Willie Lewis, a strong furlong runner, will help Borah in getting a bunch of points out of the time shall be official if two of the head timers agree, officials of that body are seeking to record the new mark at the lower figure. Places in either the California or the Stanford dual track meets will now earn monograms for Southern California athletes, the new rule having been adopted to take effect for the present season. The old rule stated that a man must place in both meets or get seconds in any other two. Points at the I.C. 4-A, the N.C.A. and the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate will now give letters to Trojan track men. Notice is hereby given that the undersigned, Executor of the Will, of William Horton Kennedy, deceased, will sell at private sale, in one parcel, to the highest bidder, upon the terms and conditions hereinafter mentioned and set forth, and subject to the confirmation of said Superior Court, on or after Saturday, the 4th day of June, 1927, at the hour of 10 o'clock in the forement of said day, all of the right, title and interest of the estate of said William Horton Kennedy, deceased, at the time of his death, in and to the real property hereinafter described, and all the right, title and interest that the said estate has, by operation of law, or otherwise acquired, other than, or in into fame last July by winning the nation 100 yards title from such veterans as Jackson Shoitz and Chet Bowman. Previously he had pushed Charley Padlock into a new world's 100-yard record, a mark that Paddock himself admits that Borah should rightfully share with him. This season, Borah has tied the record of 9.5 seconds in the century, and has run 21.1 seconds in the furlong, although he has never been pushed in the latter race. Edgar House, captain of the Trojans and a great sprinter, himself along with Willie Lewis, a strong furlong runner, will help Borah in getting a bunch of points out of the sprints for his team. In the two hurdle races, Cromwell will enter four men who have been running fine races this year. Clif Reynolds and Charles Webber in the high hurdles, and Alex Graham and Morton Kaer in the low hurdles should not go unplaced. The rest of the team is composed of Henry Coggeshall, high jumper; Melbourne Ofstad, high jumper; Lee Barnes, pole vaulter; Jack Williams, pole vaulter; Harold Lovejoy, half-miler; Cheasley Unruh, miller; Spencer Boelter, Javelin thrower; Joe Aleski, shot putter, and Jesse Hill, broad jumper. Watches on each of the sprinters who established a new world's record for the 880-yard relay here a week ago showed the following times for the University of Southern California record-breaking quartet: Willie Lewis, 22.3 seconds for standing start; Herschel Smith, 21.5 seconds; Captain Ed House and Charles Borah, 21 seconds each. The men ran around a quartermile oval. This totals 1 minute 25 4-5 seconds. This is the time two of the three head timers caught the race at, while the third read 1:26. The latter time was given out because three alternate watches had 1:26. Because the Amateur Athletic Union rule states that the NOTICE OF SALE OF REAL ESTATE AT PRIVATE SALE IN THE SUPERIOR COURT OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA, IN AND FOR THE COUNTY OF ORANGE In the Matter of the Estate of WILLIAM HORTON KENNEDY, Deceased. ANAHEIM UNION WATER CO. L. J. Sheridan, Secretary. 5-19-3t ANAHEIM'S NESS AND PROFESSIONAL DIRECTORY Jelly that didn't "jell" can be used in many ways. As a spread or sauce for pancakes; as a filling for whole stewed or baked apples; in pastry or tart shells, garnished with whipped cream; in jelly roll; in lamb or mutton gravy, if tart; as a foundation for fruit punch. Jellied prunes are made with gelatin, in the same way as any jellied fresh fruit. Use the water the prunes were cooked in, adding a little lemon juice to tone up the prunes, and allow one envelope or ounce of gelatin to each three and a half cups of liquid. As with other jellied fruits, a trifle less liquid is needed than usual because of the presence of the solid pieces of fruit. A few pecan or walnut meats scattered through this dessert make it extra good. TIMETABLE A. T. & S. F. Ry. Coast Lines In effect November 14, 1938 Trains to Los Angeles *No. 79 ... 6:45 A.M.
