Urge Governor to Approve Measure Crippled Children's Relief Association Sends Him Wire A telegram, asking Governor C. C. Young to sign assembly bill No. 185, providing for the care, treatment, and education of physically handicapped children, was sent Saturday afternoon to Sacramento, following an adjournment of the regular monthly meeting of the board of directors of the Crippled Children's Relief Association of Orange County, held at Elks Club in Anaheim. The telegram was sent under authority of the directors, following a brief address by Harry D. Riley, president of the association, who outlined the need of legislation contained in the bill now awaiting the signature of the executive. President Riley also urged the directors of the association, as well as all other citizens interested in the welfare of crippled children, to send individual letters to the governor, soliciting his support. President Riley presided over the session, which was attended by Earl C. Morrow, Santa Ana; D. F. Campbell, Orange; Mrs. George S. Briggs, Santa Ana; Mrs. Oscar Renner, Anaheim; Mrs. Gertrude Crowell, Fullerton, and Miss Grace W. Bailey, Anaheim. President Riley, who as a member of the Anaheim Rotary Club attended the Rotary convention held last month in Stockton, gave a brief report of section meetings of the convention devoted to the problems of the crippled child. On motion of Mrs. George S. Briggs, seconded by Mrs. Oscar Renner, it was decided to alternate the monthly board meetings between Anaheim, Fullerton, Santa Ana and Orange. Such an arrangement, it was explained, would not only stimulate attendance on the part of directors and others interested in the work of the association, but give more publicity to its affairs. Mrs. Crowell, field superintendent, reported that the association has 35 patients under treatment and that applications have been received for three additional cases. It was also reported that as a result of the success which has attended the work of the Orange county association, 38,000,000 Autos Predicted for 1930 Thirty-eight million automobiles will be rolling in the United States in 1930, and beginning with that period 7,000,000 cars will be required annually for replacements, in the opinion of George Brosch, special merchandising representative of the Automotive Equipment Association, Chicago, as expressed in a speech at Santa Ana. Brosch, speaking under the auspices of the Orange County Automobile Trades Association, discussed various problems confronting the merchandisers of automobiles and accessories. In presenting the situation anticipated for 1930, the speaker emphasized the probability of factories being unable to meet the demand for new cars for a series of years. He pointed out that operation of factories to their capacity would result in an area of employment and prosperity among skilled mechanics employed in the factories. NEW ENGLAND PICNIC All former residents of the New England states are very cordially invited to attend the mammoth picnic reunion to be held all day Monday, May 30th, in Sycamore Grove park, Los Angeles. This is Decoration Day, and the program will be appropriate for the oocasion, patriotic songs and addresses. Each one of the counties in each of the six states will have registers and headquarters. All who are of New England descent are also urged to attend and register in the state of their ancestors. Hot coffee will be served, but carry basket dinners. Carry flags, pennants and other decorations. Take a day off; be patriotic, and meet your friends. Who remembers the good old days when a woman could conceal her pocketbook in the hem of her skirt? European nations call Uncle Sam imperialistic because they know just what they would do if they were in his place. Bottom, left, part of the Union Oil "service station" at Weepah. The picture on the right shows the Union Ethyl car en route to the new gold town and passing an abandoned steam engine used for road building during an earlier gold strike. Mojave desert, forbidding Death Valley with its ghost town of Rhyolite, a grim reminder o fanother gold strike; the mining towns of Goldfield and Tonopah, Nevada; and on the return trip, the wooded beauties of Westgard pass, along the base of the snow-banked Mt. Whitney range. The trip was taken via Saugus, Mojave and up, the Owens Valley route to the Death Valley cut-off at Olancha. Here a halt was called, and the next morning the Union Ethyl powered Packard nosed its way across Death Valley, on through Beatty, another small town which is a bustle of excitement from mplacer mining activities, Goldfield, and then some 30 miles of winding road past Tonopah to Weepah. The return trip from Weepah is easily made in one day, and does not double up on the route to the gold town. A good gravel road winds west past Silver Peak and into California at Oasis. Here the highway which runs through Westgard pass to Lone Pine and along the Owens valley to Mojave is met. U. of C. Will Give Poultry Short Course The college of agriculture of the University of California is bringing its staff of poultry specialists to Orange county for a three-day poultry short course. This school, which is free to all, will be held on June 7, 8 and 9 at the Washington grammar school, Garden Grove, according to announcement from the farm advisor's office. The poultry industry in this county has been growing considerably. With relatively low egg prices at the present time, it makes it necessary for every poultryman to get down to brass tacks and analyze his business. The college of agriculture invites all poultrymen to attend this school. Information will be available which will assist materially in bringing success to the man engaged in the industry. Programs of the school may be secured at the farm advisor's office, 110 Hall of Records, Santa Ana. Let's hope that the nations of the world don't get into a war over disarmament. The president of Greece has resigned. Wonder if he is going into the restaurant business? Cleaning—Pressing and Alterations GENTLEMEN'S TA 219 West Center St. Better dyes are being used in wash fabrics now than ever before. Nevertheless, it is well to get a sample of goods and test it for both sunfading and water-fading before buying a piece of material. Cover a part of the sample with cardboard and expose the rest to direct sunlight for at least a week. Remove the cardboard occasionally and compare the exposed and unexposed portions. Wash a sample under ordinary conditions and note whether it fades. How many of us begin at the beginning and teach thrift to children? As soon as a boy or girl can do the necessary arithmetic, start the child off with a small allowance and an account book. Now that we have practically cut the amount that Europe owes us in two, a lot of our college professors are perfectly willing to throw off the other half.
